“The nurse has a basic concern for people as human beings, confidence in the fundamental power of personality for good, respect for religious beliefs of others, and a philosophy which will sustain and inspire others as well as herself” (ANA, 1940; p. 980). The documentary “The American Nurse”, explores some of the biggest issues the United States faces today- aging, war, poverty, and prisons- through the lives of five very different nurses and their work as health care providers. The film examines real life people in their everyday lives as nurses which changes the way one looks at and thinks about the entire concept of nursing. Nursing is not merely a job, nor is it simply an occupation or a profession. To be a nurse, one must uphold the finest of standards and ethics, dedicating their entire lives to helping and serving others. Therefore, it cannot simply be a behavior; it is a lifestyle.

Chapter six brings a different approach at introducing the importance of sociology. This chapter, focuses upon the historical significance of American sociology as society knows of it today. It discusses many different aspects of sociology, but it intentionally focuses on these important aspects that include: “The Chicago school”, sociologists whom attributed to American sociology, and the rise of female sociologists. These three fundamentals establish the overall history of American sociology.

After reading both chapters 8 and 9, they both discuss the relationships between the productions and consumption of contemporary popular music and how complex they are. In these both chapters sociologist has studied the different aspects of popular music and popular music in the society. In chapter 8, one section that really stood out to me was, the ‘Young people and cultural productivity’. In the beginning of this section it states that “Willis and his colleagues (1990) argue that as human beings we are symbolically creative, saying that ‘we argue for symbolic creativity as an integral (“ordinary”) part of human conditions, not as inanimate peaks rising above the mists’ “. In other words, humans like to create meaning to everything, including the music we listen to.

According to Chapter 4, the definition for violent is a set of behavior that produces injuries. There are many reasons that cause many people to become violent, it can be because of poverty, stress, or even unemployment and because of people’s violent tendencies there are many victims. Gay people are discriminated because of religious belief and some people believed that loving someone from the same gender should not be allowed. Gay bullying can take in all type of form, insulting with crude words is one example that is most common. I always hear the negative comment from people around, insulting an innocent guy because he is different.

Daniel Kaluuya, referring to Get Out, alarmingly states “people think horror films have monsters and aliens and darkness and all this shit. In the real world, there’s probably nothing more horrifying than racism” (Crucchiola). Daniel Kaluuya, the star of Get Out, explains the movie is more than a gruesome film intended to make people scream from spooky pop outs and morbid creatures with masks. Instead, the movie enhances the real life horror of inequality that occurs in our society everyday. On top of that, Kaluuya explains his tremendous anguish in order to play the role as Chris in the film.

According to Durkheim, Social fact or social phenomenon are the main subject matter of sociology. He said in one of his pieces that social fact must be studied distinct from the biological and psychological phenomenon. Social order is the trend of behavior being used to exercise power over another person. It has become rules and regulations that have been set up by some authorities to be obeyed by another group of people who are being undermined in a society, it is a situation that oppressed people and limits them from their liberties. When people go through these situations they cannot function the way they are supposed to function because they are limited by their freedom. These social orders are not only laws but rather certain norms created by the authority to put a whole race into a situation where they are very far from freedom of speech, movement, and knowledge. African Americans are an example of a race that has been through discrimination at workplaces, schools, community etc. They are one race which has been a label or put in a class where the situation will never permit you to climb the ladder of success. Like any scientific discipline, the nursing profession has evolved over time. Nurses, once regarded as housemaids and lower class citizens, now hold positions of authority and stature in our modern society. These changes in the profession are attributed to the many nurse theorists who devoted their lives to the improvement of patient care. Through their theoretical advancements, the public perception of nursing has gone from dismissive to reverential. Today, our culture considers the nursing profession to be one of the most rewarding and respected career paths an individual can pursue. Through a review of one such patient theorist, Dorothea Orem, one can witness this change in the perception of the nursing profession. As a first semester student in a professional nursing course of study, Orem has already influenced my personal nursing philosophy.

Sociology is the study of how social forces influence individuals living within a society. Any society is made of norms, values and beliefs that have the effect of constraining individuals’ thoughts and behaviors. Through understanding and sociological imagination, individuals can remove or at least lessen the social forces’ impacts that are causing the constraints.
