Dune by Frank Herbert is about a desert planet called Arrakis, or Dune, and the battle that takes place on it. The battle includes several different cultures all fighting for control over the planet’s very special resource. This book is very applicable to today’s society even though it was written over 50 years ago. The book begins on the planet Caladan. Caladan is a beautiful planet with large oceans and lush forests. It is ruled by the Atreides family, which is only one of the ruling families in the galaxy. The Duke Leto is the head of the Atreides family and is very wise and compassionate, but he is ruthless with his enemies. The Lady Jessica is Leto’s concubine and a member of the Bene Gesserit. It seems like an unfair deal because Caladan is a lush and beautiful planet while Arrakis is a barren, desert planet. However, Arrakis is home to the most valuable resource in the universe: the spice. The spice is a drug made from the planet’s giant sand worms that grants the user increased awareness. Its only downside is that once one takes it, they become dependent on it and will die if they do not receive a consistent supply. Because of this, whoever controls the spice, controls the entire galactic economy. This theme is shown through the planet of Arrakis, its resources, and its people. Although Arrakis is a barren wasteland, the little resources it does have are extremely important. The spice controls the entire galactic economy and is needed by all who inhabit it. The people of Arrakis must do all that they can to protect because they will all die otherwise. Another important resource on Arrakis is water. Arrakis is a desert planet so water is very rare. In order to survive the Femin use still suits to recycle their bodily fluids to preserve as much water as possible. In addition, when someone dies, they drain the body of its water.
