When I was thirteen, I played the most challenging game of softball that I'd ever experienced in my nine years of playing the game. Softball had always been my favorite sport to play, and, in my mind, I had perfected the craft of being a first baseman. Naturally, I was excited to learn that after a long, successful season, I had been picked to be the all-star team's first baseman. I wasn't surprised because I was good at what I did, and I knew it. Well, in this particular game, I learned the hard way what it was truly like to be a part of a team.
I remember walking into the baseball complex and breathing in the familiar smell of the concession stand, sunflower seeds, and Gatorade. Upon walking into the dugout, red clay, grass, and sweat were added to the smell. It was comforting and got me into game mode. When the clock struck noon, we had already won our first game and were starting our second. By halftime, we had a three-point lead. In the three innings that had comprised the first half of our game, I'd had multiple outs on first, making our fielding short and simple. This, however, would not be the case in the second half.
The second half of the game proved to be a lot more challenging than the first half. It was like the other team woke up. They're hits were actually making it to the outfield, which meant I wasn't doing much on first base. At the end of the fourth inning, when the batter bunted the ball, it rolled right into our pitcher's glove. It seemed almost too
When I was playing travel softball for Angels Fastpitch in my second year of ten and under softball, this memoir began. My coach would not play me much because he said I was not good enough, he said I could not catch. He said many other things all were horrible. The emotions that came
According to the Oxford Dictionary of British and World English, guilt is a feeling of having committed wrong or failed in an obligation. It is an emotion that all men are familiar with, as all men have committed wrong deeds which in turn incur a feeling of guilt. Like most emotions, guilt can take many different forms, can originate from different sources, and can have different effects depending on the subject of the emotion. Similarly, in both the novel Fifth Business and the play Hamlet, guilt plays an important role in the protagonists’, antagonists’, and character foils’ lives’, but as all emotions are, comes from different sources and affects the characters in different ways.
The pressure was on as I pitched as a run could change the game. But
The smell of a new softball is exhilarating, making a mistake in front of everyone is humiliating. Brand new leather and red seams under your fingers, your pitch went flying and the embarrassment lingers.Everyone was silent besides a couple who did snicker, eventually you are joined on the mound, just to bicker.Your coach is angry, he gets stern and yells, when talking to him it is like walking on eggshells. You can’t give up and you will try again, this is a skill you will obtain.Another chance is given to you,the chanting is music to your ears, from the dugout crew. Persistence is key, practice makes perfect, do not listen to the old coach who called you a reject. You are amazing, a star, you are glorious,
My breakfast started to creep back up my throat as game time got closer and closer. I walked across the patch of grass behind home plate and was towered over by the 30 foot backstop with a huge net suspended from it. My bulging bag of equipment was beginning to make my shoulder hang. I walked down the steps into the cement dugout and placed my bag under the bench that spanned the entire length of the dugout. I sat down, laced up my cleats, and put my warm-up jacket on in preparation for batting practice. I stepped onto the grass surrounding the dugout to get the feeling of how wet the grass was. I dug my cleats into the grass and began my usual routine of taking certain practice swings as I gazed upon the press box in the wake of the backstop. Preceding the burn in my forearms, caused from the practice swings, I marched behind the dugout to the rows of batting cages to wait my turn in line. Pacing back and forth I knew I had to keep my nervousness to a minimum. I popped in a wad of Big League Chew and continued to
Softball is a sport that is known throughout the United States and the world. Softball originated on Thanksgiving Day in Chicago in 1887. The game was actually said to have begun as an indoor game. Softball was started by a group of men who had gathered at a club to watch the Harvard vs. Yale football game. When the news came that Yale had defeated Harvard, 17-8, one Yale supporter, overcome with enthusiasm, picked up an old boxing glove and threw it at a nearby Harvard alumni, who promptly tried to hit it back with a stick. This gave George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, an idea. He suggested a game of indoor baseball. Naturally, Hancock's friends thought he was talking about playing a game outdoors, not indoors.
As I was still getting the hang of this new sport I had realized that I have an advantage that the other girls didn’t have, it was my personal coach. My mom. Not only is she my softball coach, but she’s also my life coach. Over the years I have grown such an attachment to this game, that I can’t imagine my life without it. So that is why I don’t take softball for granted, because when I broke my left ankle I couldn’t even practice, or when I tore a ligament in my right ankle, I was definitely sad and I didn't know what to do, I felt empty, plus seeing people playing your favorite game in front of you and knowing you can't play really takes a toll on you emotionally. I still remember when I had to sit out of several softball games, and a championship. I felt like I was letting my teams down, I just felt so useless. That’s where I can mostly identify myself with my mother, through softball and the injuries that she has had during playing the
Softball is a growing sport for girls within the United States. Whether you are an 8-year-old girl, to a senior in college softball, it’s a sport that many are attached too. A new form of hitting came into play during the 2005 Women’s College Series. Slap hitting is a new form of hitting that changed the way the game of fast-pitch softball is being played. Slapping changed the way coaches and players think about how they are going to field a slap hitter. This form of hitting is becoming a major role within fast-pitch softball. When I got the opportunity to learn how to slap hit I was excited to gain this ability. With practice, patience and determination, I began to learn the hitting style that I use today.
Three people allegedly part of a large drug trafficking organization were indicted last week and six pounds of heroin were seized, said Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
Did you ever wonder who actually invented the game of softball or how came up with the idea? Well keep reading to find out some of your questions you might have about softball. Did you know that softball did not get it actual name until 1926 it was called indoor baseball, mush ball, kitten ball and more. Softball was invented in 1887 around thanksgiving by George Hancock.
When most people think of softball they don’t take it as seriously as someone might for baseball, but softball is just as tough and competitive. The pitchers for both sports have an even tougher time. Every position is important, but if your pitcher’s arm is sore after every game, then it’s going to impact your team. Baseball players are always worried about when their arm will start hurting, and the pitch count put in place helps so that they don’t throw out their arm. Softball is different, in that there is no pitch count rule.
We were in a tie game at the bottom of the tenth inning, and that’s when it hit me. We had been working for this moment for the past eleven months, and now we were in Huntington Beach, California for the Premier Girls Fastpitch Nationals. The other team was in scoring position. I should have been panicking. I should have felt defeated. However, I was content. No matter the outcome of the game, I knew I would leave the field a changed person, because that day in that very game, I realized that softball has made me who I am.
Have you ever thought about the sport of softball? I finally did when I was right around the age of seven. I didn’t think to play right away, even my kindergarten reading buddy said that when she asked me if I would ever try softball I had a very quick response of “No”. When I was younger I had my heart set on soccer. We see how that changed quickly. Now I try and balance softball and school every night. Somehow even after 5 years of different teams I’m still balancing both.
Leadership is a skill that takes time and dedication to obtain and requires the ability to inspire a positive attitude in those around you. The leadership roles I have obtained will be useful in improving myself and the environment around me. I have been on the varsity lacrosse team since freshman year. Now that it is my senior year, I was appointed by my head coach as team captain. The position of captain has given me the opportunity to encourage younger players to continue the sport and settle disputes within the team while also providing the players with a mentor outside of lacrosse too. I met one of the incoming freshman players by inviting her to sit with me at lunch. This allowed me to build a friendship with the girl and establish a level of trust among the team.
As we were sitting there, you could feel the excitement running through the stadium. It was the same stadium that we’ve been to many times before. The smell of the hotdogs, the luscious ivy that was in the outfield, and the organ being played. All of the things were the same, but this time everything was different. Everyone knew what was happening. This could be the first time in over 100 years that the Cubs could make the World Series. As the game was getting close to over, finishing the 8th going into the 9th inning, we were hoping that this year would be the year to finally have the shot. We hoped that our lousy luck in the playoffs doesn’t affect us again. This time we could have it, we were almost there. All of these years where our dream has fell apart finally coming together to put us in the right place. All of us prayed there wouldn’t have to be a Game 7 and that it could happen tonight. It could be the day that we finally clinch the National League.
