New York, New York 2:00 in the morning was the time I had to wake up. It was an important reason, because I had to catch a flight. We had to grab our bags, pick up my Grandfather, then head to Mitchell International airport in downtown Milwaukee. We had to be there for a flight to a city so great, they named it twice: New York, New York. New York City was always a dream of mine to visit: to see Times Square, Statue of Liberty, and to pay my respects to the 9/11 memorial. But as an early Christmas gift to me, and also my Grandfather, who has never been to New York in all 65 years of his life, I got to go during one of the best times in New York, Christmas season. This is the time of the year when NBC puts up a giant, towering Christmas tree in the front of their main building, 30 Rockefeller Center. Then you can also see the snow on top of the buildings and atop the Statue of Liberty. New York City is a great city, but first impressions aren’t the best. If you fly into LaGuardia Airport, the place is a dump. The floors are cracked and dusty, it smells of jet fuel and Cinnabon, and there isn’t even an established taxi stand, they just line up on a dirt road near the side. But given the place was under construction when we arrived, I will give them credit this time. The taxi ride was one of the shortest distance ride I have ever ridden a taxi in, but was also the longest time I have rode in a taxi. Because of the gridlock rush hour traffic, it took us nearly an hour to travel about 10 miles. But for the ride through Brooklyn and into Manhattan, the taxi driver was a good tour guide, pointing out Harlem, the Bronx, and other parts of the city. He pointed out the Brooklyn Bridge, the New York subway, and famous buildings such as the Chrysler building. We finally arrived at our hotel, which was placed perfectly in the heart of Times Square. We stayed in a DoubleTree right on 47th and Broadway, directly across the street from the bleachers that house the Broadway shows ticket vendors. Even during night time, with all the screens and lights, it was as bright as it was in daytime. Times Square is the 2nd biggest tourist attraction in America, so it was one of the busiest parts of the city, especially during rush
New York is known as the city that never sleeps, the Big Apple, and the escape plan for almost all the dreamers out there. While you’re here, we've got 11 places you need to visit before you venture off into the sunset.
It was the furthest we had ever traveled to go somewhere. The first 7 hours felt like forever since it was all just highway and nothing to see but trees until we passed by Richmond Virginia which was a city we had never seen. It looked very historical just by passing through it on I-95. We later continued on and stumbled upon Washington D.C, Baltimore, and later on to Philadelphia. After about 13 hours we started getting very close to our destination. My family and I were very anxious to finally get to our hotel. It was about 11 pm when started seeing massive skyscrapers lit up by their inner lights. To my amazement, it was my first time seeing New York City.
“Dedicated to the memory of former Beatle and peace activist, John Lennon” (ENY, 156). It was cool to see all the people who were there to mourn the loss of John Lennon or playing a Beatles song. We then ended by the Bethesda Fountain. It was so pretty and the views were amazing. “The statue at the top of the fountain, known as Angel of the Waters, was created by Emma Stebbins in 1868, and is based upon the biblical story from the Revelations of an angel blessing the Pool of Bethesda, giving it healing powers” (ENY, 155). I just sat by the fountain for a little while before heading home because it just amazing how this big park could be placed in the middle of a crazy city. Today was an amazing day and I learned so much about Central Park and everything they have to offer in the
Narrow cobblestone streets above wide canals, rosy cheeked people riding bicycles, interesting museums, old windmills, beautiful tulips, and cheese to die for. I do not have to add “coffee shops” and the Red Light District for you to realize what place I am talking about, do I? I am obviously talking about the lovely city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
Three days after my high school graduation, Randolph and I spent a day in a whole new city. Being from Roselle, I had never really been to one of the most beautiful city such as downtown Chicago. Spending the day in Chicago was like discovering a new way of living life that I had only heard from siblings and the news. I checked my bags to make sure I didn’t leave anything essential behind and I checked them five more times. we were sleepy during the flight as we arrived at the airport and made our way to the gate. The streets are filled with an atmosphere that is like a child on a shopping spree in a candy store. I was thrilled as I realized that I was in one of the biggest airport in the United States. watching the Chicago Cubs win the World Series was the most amazing feeling.
Growing up in Manhattan was an epitome of excitement. Back in the day, and also to its founding, New York has always been a beehive of activities. Going down memory lane, I reminisce on trips that we’d take to loads of places around the city for entertainment during weekends and on holidays. Raised by Spanish immigrants, my father was a chef in a small but busy restaurant along Fifth Avenue. Since I can recall, fifth avenue has always had some of the major and well known fashion stores and hotels in the city. This would have
New York City is made up of five boroughs, which include the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Within these boroughs, there are high and low-income neighborhoods that contain either high or low status organizational structures or facilities. Each division has their own characteristics and top attractions, such as the Empire State building, Central Park, or Times Square. As New York City may be known for great food and fun attractions, New York faces infrastructure problems within each borough. New York City’s infrastructure funding is limited in lower income neighborhoods, where money needed to upkeep the city goes toward prime tourist’s areas or residents living in high status neighborhoods, such as The Upper East Side of Manhattan, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and Lenox Hill, Manhattan. Moreover, abandoned buildings, poor sewage conditions, and rocky roads and streets are examples of low-income area infrastructure problems that may hinder neighborhood growth both structurally and economically. Harlem, East Brooklyn, and South Bronx are low-income parts of New York that lack new and refined facilities, roads, plumbing, and fundamental structures, which contribute to high crime and arrests.
This is my first time that I come to New York, so I am curious about many things in this new place, such as the famous resorts, and the people here. As we know, the Times Square is very famous in New York. When I was in China, I hope I can visit Times Square, because I saw Times Square was very great in some of the opening of American series. Now, I am in New York, and I have enough chances to visit Times Square whenever I want. In there, it gives me a new horizon to understand the culture that is different from China.
When I was a child, I’d heard of New York City and it’s splendor, but I’d never seen a picture of the city itself, or heard anyone describe it in full detail. My nonchalant attitude took a complete one-eighty when the Christmas film Elf was released. In the film, the city is displayed from the sidewalk to the top of the Empire State in a short two minutes. Two minutes was all it took for six year old me to become completely enamored. I planned out my entire life living in a high rise apartment in Times Square, going out every day to explore the city until I knew every corner and building by name. At the time of the band trip, however, New York had become much
Today, New York City is one of the most iconic cities in the world. When you think of New York, some of the first things that come to mind area Broadway, Wall Street, Times Square, and just the thrill of the city itself. On Broadway, you can see shows like Wicked, Mamma Mia, The Newsies, and
