Brixham is lovely and quaint little fishing village in the county of Devon in the South West of England. The town of Brixham spans several hills around the main harbour—which remains as an important economic center of Brixham. Fishing and Tourism are certainly the town’s two main economic sources. This is great news for visitors, as it means that there is no shortage of things to do if you’re visiting for short while. In the summer, there are festivals around town such as the Cowtown Conjunto Festival. It involves a party to remind citizens of a time when Brixham was two separate communities connected together through a marshy lane. The town also holds a yearly pirate event. This quirky event involves a competition to see which place has the most pirates in one place at a given time. Boating and mariner life are such a focal point here. They even have a tourist attraction in the replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ship the Golden Hind. This ship has been permanently moored here. In 'Ballad of Birmingham,' Dudley Randall illustrates a conflict between a child who wishes to march for civil rights and a mother who wishes only to protect her child. Much of this poem is read as dialogue between a mother and a child, a style which gives it an intimate tone and provides insight to the feelings of the characters. Throughout the poem the child is eager to go into Birmingham and march for freedom with the people there. The mother, on the other hand, is very adamant that the child should not go because it is dangerous. It is obvious that the child is concerned about the events surrounding the march and wants to be part of the movement. The child expresses these feelings in a way

My tan painted brick house, accented with deep canyon red bricks beneath the windows, stands on the outskirts of Philadelphia. Down the driveway to the left is Fairmount Park where hundreds of people walk alongside the creek and feed the greedy ducks. Turn right, and about ten more turns lies the cloud-breaking buildings that are Center City. Although my location provides the best of both worlds, Roxborough does not have a good diner. When I was younger there was an amazing diner near my home, but it suffered a fire; the mint green and white building still remains stagnant with its burnt insides and graffiti contaminated exterior. There is a diner near us now, but its reputation of multiple restaurants housed in the same building preceding

“There must be quite a few things a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them. Whenever I’m sad I’m going to die, or so nervous I can’t sleep, or in love with someone I won’t be seeing for a week, I slump down just so far and then I say: ‘I’ll go take a hot bath,’ ” (Plath, 12).
Dudley Randall chose “Ballad of Birmingham” to captivate a tragic time in his view by using it in poetic form. He chose that form best because it was the most effective way to get it across readers easily. It also shows the problems that were going on with African Americans in the early 1900’s.
The poem Ballad of Birmingham, by Dudley Randall is about the bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama during 1963. The poem begins with a question and ends with a completely different question. It starts with a girl asking her mother a question: “Mother dear, may I go downtown / Instead of out to play, / And march the streets of Birmingham / In a freedom March today?” (lines 1 - 4). It ends with the mother asking: “But, baby, where are you?” (line 32). The author uses literary devices, such as rich word choice, vivid imagery, and alliterations, to bring up important issues of racism, questions of freedom and safety, and to contribute to the poem’s thematic significance. Randall also uses a question and answer form between the mother and
I have been far too lax in starting this blog. For weeks, I have told people they could look at my blog to see what I've been up to in London. That was clearly untrue, given this is my first post. I regret not posting early, because I cannot hope to capture the sense I got of this city when I first arrived here, nor can I quite recall the exact feeling of taking the Tube for the first time, or my first double decker bus ride. Today was actually my first time on the upper deck, so that I can recall. Nevertheless, I shall try to communicate, in the fullest sense, my impressions on all kinds of things here in London.
