Did you know that people HATED wolves in the 1800’s ? But now people want to protect them, in North Carolina and Alaska it is illegal to hunt wolves. There used to be 2 million gray wolves but now there is 200 thousand. People would pay for hunters to kill gray wolves. People in the 1800’s wanted them extinct. Read more to find out more. Wolves usually eat large prey as deer, elk, caribou, and moose. But sometimes they will eat rodents, beavers, and birds. When prey is scarce they will eat berries, nuts, fruits, and insects. Wolves travel in packs of 4-10. Packs have the alphas, the mother and father are the alphas. Then their pups and older offspring are normal wolves in a pack. The female alpha and male are the pack leaders that hunt and track animals. They’re the ones that choose their territory or den. People think that wolves howl at the moon… They don’t. They are more active at sunrise and sundown. But they do howl more when it’s a lighter night. And that is when there is a full moon. Wolves are very interesting. A wolves habitat can be anywhere. In the arctic, the plains, the woods, grasslands, forests. Wolves can live anywhere. Wolves require large areas to live and hunt in. The biggest wolf territory was 1,000 square miles. The smallest can be 50 miles. More prey= less space, less prey = more space. But either way their habitats are huge! In conclusion wolves are amazing. The more you know about wolves the more you want to help them. A wolf's life is dangerous, unique, and interesting. A wolf’s habitat can be anywhere. They have different foods but so little of it.
