In Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist the idea of when you want something all the universe conspires to help you achieve it can be used to describe Santiago’s journey in Tangier. The King of Salem Melchizedek tells Santiago that on page 24. This idea can clearly be seen all throughout the book. For example when Santiago is thinking to himself about the journey he has had so far he states “Tangier was no longer a strange city, and he felt that just as as he had conquered this place, he could conquer the world” (64). When he says this he is reminiscing about all of the things he has gone through and how he has overcome all of it. Another example of that idea being relevant is also on page 64 when Santiago is thinking about when the King told him “never

Santiago’s growth was inspiring to me. He has learned a great deal from action. He learns quite a lot about the land and his sheep by being a shepherd and paying attention to the world around him. His grandfather had mentioned to him a while back of an omen. “By traveling, watching and paying attention, the world will speak to Santiago to help him find is Personal Legend.” Through action, Santiago learns how easy it is to search for one’s Personal Legend. Everyone has their own way of learning things. For example when Santiago decides to try reading the Englishman’s book and he would try and read the signs of the desert. The boy does not learn a thing from the book and the Englishman learns nothing from watching the caravan. Just as Santiago

However, after he dies, he is able to see his life through a different perspective, one of eternity, and realizes how unique and important his life has been. This closely echoes the truth found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church which says that only in heaven with Christ will we find our true identity and meaning of life. 1 Death is only the beginning for Eddie and his journey through the five “heavens” of people that his life has impacted demonstrates how intricately woven together every humanity is. As pilgrims, our view of suffering and day to day actions constricts our ability to see how God truly weaves human messiness together to create a beautiful tale of redemption. So, we must live for the destination, not for the journey, leaning on hope instead of complete understanding.
