Many people around the world suffer from depression, a mental illness that negatively affects the way we think, act, and feel on a day-to-day basis. However, it can hurt the body in ways that can affect your future. Even though it’s only mental, it comes with a lot of physical effects. How does it physically hurt the body? Usually when thinking about depression, you think of how much the person affected will sleep. This is because a common short-term effect is developing insomnia (lack of sleep) or hypersomnia (too much sleep) (Psychguides). When we sleep, it’s a restorative state that repairs the body. If we don’t get adequate or enough sleep, the body can’t repair. This will, in turn, weaken the immune system. When the body can’t repair, it can lessen how effective vaccinations are, and increase the level of stress hormones which will lead to inflammation. …show more content…

When the level of stress hormones in your body increase, it makes the heart rate speed up, making your blood vessels tighten. This results in your body being in a prolonged state of emergency, causing heart diseases, such as coronary artery disease. The inflammation caused by the hormones can also cause kidney disease, as most patients ignore the signs and medical treatments. Living with an already chronic disease can cause other chronic diseases such as lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body. The risk of getting lupus is higher because the immune system is weaker and there is inflammation already existing, a common symptom (Healthline Media). The progression of lupus will then happen because the symptoms will happen.
