Dental braces were originally created to help with the position of teeth in regards to a person's bite, as well as to straighten the teeth. Braces can be helpful in correcting underbites, malocclusions, overbites, open bites, deep bites, cross bites, crooked teeth, as well as other issues with the teeth and jaw. As an alternative to the unsightliness and discomfort that braces can inflict, Zia Chishti and Kelsey Wirth founded Invisalign in 1997, a system of clear aligners to adjust teeth. With this somewhat recent invention and alternative treatment technique, controversy has sparked between dentists and orthodontists as to whether or not Invisalign is ideal for all patients, is sustainable, and is a lasting treatment method in comparison to fixed dental appliances. Practicing dentists and orthodontists must take into account the performance of each method, treatment retention, and treatment time period when determining which treatment method is ideal for their patients. Though research has been conducted along with observations, there is a widespread discrepancy in collected data supporting each treatment method in favor of another. Research from Djeu, Shelton and Maganzini (2004) found that overall prost retention rates of traditional braces had a higher passing rate than that of the invisalign group as observed using the American Board of Orthodontics model. Conversely, research from Li, Wang and Zhang (2015) found that there was no statistical differences between invisalign and braces results, when observing that both methods received passing grades based on the ABO model.
