My past dental experiences have caused me to be certain of one thing: the path to my dental aspirations stretch far and this journey must continue. From becoming acquainted with my first dental instrument and exercising four-handed dentistry as a dental assistant, to promoting good oral health and preventing oral diseases as a pediatric registered dental hygienist, along the way I have conquered many challenges which have helped to shape the dental health professional that I am. One must always strive to continue to learn, practice and explore. In dentistry there is so much to be desired and it is in dental school that I will find the upcoming challenge I have been yearning for. The decision to become a certified dental assistant came short after my undergraduate career. It generated a great deal of learning opportunities both in the classroom and the dental clinic. Dental Materials was one aspect of this career path that I found presented a world of endless tools and resources that make dentistry a possibility. Having graduated, I was soon exposed to different patient population settings ranging from private dental offices to community health …show more content…
Here I learned the utmost importance of oral health promotion and the prevention of dental related diseases through patient education. I was also able to find my place in pediatric dentistry as I learned to work with children from various health and sociocultural backgrounds. The opportunity to exercise my skills while working with the pediatric patient population soon appeared: I became part of a pediatric dental team called All About Kids Pediatric Dentistry. There I began working as a dental assistant with pediatric dentists and dental anesthesiologists, and moved on to providing oral hygiene care. Pediatric dentistry has never felt so rewarding and the idea of considering this specialty remains a tangible

Being a first year student at the Fortis Institute Dental Hygiene School, I have experienced many wonderful things. I have made new friendships, enhancing my learning experience, furthering my career, and my personal favorite experience, clinic. I have learned many techniques from observing the other students during this time. Also, being in the clinic had shown me that being an RDH is what I want to do. In my essay I will discuss my Fears, experiences, observations, my new found confidences, and finally how my view of Dental Hygiene has changed.
“The joy of changing a person’s life by creating a beautiful, healthy smile is one of the intangible rewards of being a dentist that cannot be measured.” Dianne Glasscoe, RDH. With that, my overall mission is to educate every patient, and help them to understand and achieve a lifetime of dental health. These purposes and philosophies are just two of the many reasons behind my pursuit for a career as a dental hygienist, and now to further my knowledge and become a dentist. Years ago, an elementary class of 15 students were selected to go on a field trip to a local dental office.
When it came to choosing a prospective career path, I was sure that I wanted to pursue dental therapy. I have always wanted to be in a profession which is involved with scientific applications but also coincides with patient care and truly improves people’s quality of life. I believe that dental therapy is an ever growing sector, with constant advancements in treatment and patient care which provides endless opportunities for further studying and specialisation, whilst providing a stable interesting career. The decision of taking a course in dental therapy was reinforced when I had the opportunity to shadow a dental hygienist in a dental studio, he gave me an honest insight as to what I would be taking part in.
The oral condition of a patient’s mouth is not only important to their health, but also to the patient’s self-esteem; however, for many treatments to be carried forward, the condition of a patient’s gums and mouth needs to be stable and controlled. My work as a dental nurse has introduced me to another side of health and wellbeing for the oral cavity and from understanding the physiology of the mouth and how this can affect the whole body. I never realised how common periodontal diseases were, until patients came in for dental treatment; the value of preventative care and education to patients is one perseverance and trust. Dental nursing required many skills which included teamwork, communication, care and patience among many; over the two years of training, I know my skills have been enhanced by the support and guidance of other dental professionals during my training.
With my early trips to the dentist and the natural loss of my baby teeth having sparked an interest in dentistry before I really knew what being a dentist meant, I began shadowing to further explore the profession. As I watched a tooth take shape from a blob of acrylic under the experienced hand of the dentist I was shadowing, I was filled with the same awe and satisfaction that I gain from the piano. Dr. Aboud repeatedly positioned the temporary crown in the patient’s mouth, checked his bite, and painstakingly continued to adjust the crown until the fit was just right. Though I have wanted to be a dentist for almost as long as I have played the piano, my interest in dentistry grew
It is evident that it is truly where my head, heart and hands, become one. Being a dental hygienist and working in close proximity with the dentist has served to strengthen my desire to take my education and service to the next level. I want to increase my knowledge about the science behind dentistry and learn everything I need to know to be a great dentist and apply it into practice. Improve constantly and strive to provide the highest quality of oral health care available to patients by delivering meticulous, gentle, thorough, reassuring dentistry and exceeding patient satisfaction. Dentistry without a doubt, is the profession for me. I believe I have the qualities that are essential to making a great dentist along with the academic motivation in order to replace my interest for dentistry with the expertise that will help me provide quality oral care. If my greatest aspirations are to provide pain relief, to develop patient rapport, and utilize creativity in working with my hands, then dentistry is, indeed, my
Ever since I was in middle school, I would tell everyone that I was going to become a dentist. That was my career plan until the summer of my junior year. During that summer, I had the opportunity to do an internship and job shadow Dr. Bradshaw at his private dental office. While observing and talking to the doctor, I realized that I would not enjoy working as a dentist. I still wanted to pursue a career in the dental field so I decided to job shadow the dental hygienists. Watching the dental hygienists perform their duties and interact with patients made me want to pursue a career in dental hygiene. I knew very little about dental hygienists besides the fact that they clean teeth. As I spent time with the dental hygienists, I learned more each day. While researching for this paper, I became knowledgeable on even more information. From reading The Occupational Outlook Handbook and A Career as a Dental
This year has went by so fast! However, it was much more stressful with board exams vastly approaching, it was also easier now that I was in the swing of things. I don’t’ think twice when picking up a gracey, muscle memory just knows what to do! Although I am not perfect, I believe I am a safe beginner to practice in a dental office. This brings me great joy! As I have been waiting for this day to come for a long time. I’m so thankful to have had this experience, although it was not an easy one. I feel incredibly blessed to have been taught by the best, in such a well-organized clinic. I’m in awe with the patience the instructors have had with me, and my classmates as we learned what to prioritize and made personal improvements. In a strange way I will miss the pressure of school.
Dentistry appeals to me as it combines a high level of patient interaction with the chance to use practical skills and scientific understanding in order to improve people's oral health being not only mentally stimulating but also practically challenging. As a dentist I will be able to make a positive contribution to my local community, and as a genuine caring person with the determination to thrive in my studies.
That was my preschool teacher’s voice ringing through the 4 year old me before our trip. It was an unusual trip because when permission slips were handed out, we thought it was a tour of the facility -- but we were wrong. It was a dentist appointment for each of us who attended. Upon arrival, it didn’t occur to me that fear crept into the minds of the others because I was so amazed at what lied ahead of me. The neat structures of every machine, the unity of the staff, and the knowledge of each dentist amazed me. It felt like I entered somewhere I see myself in fifteen years.
With fondness, I will always remember when I first began to consider dentistry as a future profession. My childhood mentor Dr. Spigner was having a weekend workshop for his patients, at this moment, I was exposed to dental education at its full capacity. While there we learned how to properly brush and floss our teeth, the benefits of tooth hygiene, and how fillings are applied to adolescent teeth. After learning these helpful tips, I wanted to share my newfound information about the importance of
Dental Hygiene is very important to me and has been since I was a child, this has influenced my desire of becoming a pediatric dentist. In a personal interview i conducted with Dr.Bills she informed me of this, “Dental Hygiene is emphasized by all dentists, we want our patients to have elegant white teeth and pleasant breath”(Bills). I would like to teach children the importance of keeping their teeth brushed so that they will have a beautiful smile and healthy teeth. Pediatric Dentistry is a superb fit for me because I care about dental health and I want children to know the importance as well. It is never too early for children to learn how important dental hygiene is.
