I found the readings for this week to be very interesting, with the Lucy Green piece being my favorite of everything we’ve read so far. The concept of transfer was already my favorite topic of discussion in this class, so getting to analyze it in the context of musical meaning and interpretation is fascinating! I’m genuinely disappointed that I wasn’t about to attend the in-class discussion. Thankfully, was able to get a little insight into the class’s discussion and activities after talking with my roommate, Tyler. He said that you had everyone come up with two meaningful ways that you could inquire into your students’ lives. He also said that you had a review discussion for the next Annotated Learning assignment, and he filled me in on the …show more content…
Inherent meaning refers to the physical properties of the music, and what they tell us about other parts of the music. For example, if were hear a big drum roll, most would assume that it’s in preparation for a big chord or some other important musical moment. Delineated meaning refers to the sound of music, and what connections to non-musical ideas it causes us to make. For example, the timbre of a banjo will make most people think of country music and the south, regardless of what genre it is actually playing. As Green puts it, “with inherent meaning the process of signification occurs from sound to sound, whereas with delineation it occurs from sound to non-sound.” I couldn’t agree more with what Lucy Green has presented. Throughout my many years of private piano lessons, I had the opportunity to play many different pieces from many different time periods. When playing a piece for a first time, I would always play very slowly and listen to the shape of the melody and the form of the piece, allowing my ears to predict what I was about to play next. In addition to this inherent meaning, I would simultaneously be drawing connections to other songs, childhood memories, or emotions. I’d often try to place myself in the mind of the composer and imagine what it was like to live during his time in order to best interpret the ink on the
This week’s discussion was worse than last weeks since some people were not listening and that more parts of the book were getting more challenging to understand. I did not enjoy the discussion director’s part of the discussion because most questions were hard to respond to and there was a limited amount of
That was a beautiful week, I enjoyed reading all of the materials despite my challenge about the electricity issues. I have some concerns because until now due to electricity issues I am unable to participate in the discussion forum. I posted so late in the discussion when the electricity was established I prepared my assignments, I assessed my peers, and I did not find enough time to go in the discussion forum to read and rate my fellow classmates; and I did not grade for my discussion. Then, I will strive to see how I am going to solve this problem quickly.
Differentiation is the tool used by educators who recognize that all students come to them with different readiness levels and learning styles. It allows us to meet the needs of each individual student while meeting the standards developed by state and national education associations. Additionally, there are many different types of differentiation that can be used in a classroom: teachers can create learning centers, use differentiated assessments, and develop anchor activities, etc. Currently, I utilize differentiated assessments, but my goal for the upcoming school year is to utilize more learning centers and to incorporate anchor activities into my daily classroom routine.
Second, I expect this class to have intense moments of discussion as we are learning to be critical thinkers and not base our writings off of opinion, I hope to learn a lot about other people and cultures from those discussions that will help me to write more like a critical thinker. I also expect to spend many hours writing, rewriting, and revising our final research project, I am anxious to see how the growth over the course of this semester shows in our final project
This semester has been an immensely enjoyable experience and has taught me things I never thought I would learn. Learning how to actively listen to music has forever changed my outlook on music in general. For the midterm assessment, I wrote that I thought something that has been particularly interesting to me were some of the more abstract pieces such as Black Angels, where I was able to finally find the artistry in what otherwise seemed like a random, bizarre collection of sounds. During the second half of the course I was able to take the skills we learned in the first half that made me appreciate the artistry in these pieces and reinforce them to the point where I could apply them to some of the songs I would hear on the radio everyday which brought the course full circle for me. Before this course began, I listened to music simply at face value, and was never someone to look much deeper into the artistry behind the songs we all love. I really only listened to more popular music on the radio just for the catchy tune. After an entire semester of fine tuning techniques to develop a deeper understanding of the music that I listen too, I find myself gravitating towards music that I would have never listened to otherwise and developing an appreciation for the artistry in all genres of music.
My favorite part of the class were the discussions that followed the readings. I enjoyed the different views people had over topic and what they read. In my opinion, “Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn’t Call Police” by Martin Gansberg brought up the most discussion and was my personal favorite. I and other people in the class could not believe, no one helped Catherine Genovese any of the times the man came back to finish the job of killing.
Last class we broke into intragroups and reported out. What are your reactions to last class? In what ways did we practice dialogue during the last half of our last session? What did you notice about your classmates? Whose voices did we hear? Whose voices were missing?
At the end of both days I spent free time with both co-teachers in the staff breakroom. They used this time to show me some of the less visible parts of teaching. They discussed lesson planning, grading, and plenty of information on how to interact with students. I discussed how odd it felt to be back in the classroom and how I felt so disconnected from it all. They used this to discuss how versatile the behavior of students was. They said that in school they felt
This week in class something that stood out to me was the “pageant”. I think that this activity was a really good way to get us out of out comfort zones. I would never be presenting or talking to my class by choice. We also finished watching Poverty Inc. I really enjoy learning more about the topic of poverty because I feel like we are only given the basics of the topic normally. I think the activities that get us out of our comfort zones are teaching me some life skills for my future.
What stood out to you in this week’s content material and why was it significant to your learning process.
The professor began the class by telling the students a story about his grandchildren in a way to transition into the assigned readings of the day. The students were very responsive to him and seemed to be very comfortable since they were making jokes back and forth. It was really relieving to see this interaction and also gave me a sense of the types of professors and students at the Washington College of Law.
ENGLISH with Mrs. Spade… AWESOME FIRST WEEK! Our Dolphin Team did an excellent job assimilating to ODS over the past couple of days. We settled in, wrote a quick persuasive piece, and read the first chapter of The View From Saturday. I am already impressed and know we have a solid group this year.
The movie I choose to compare to my experience was the “Clan of the Cave Bear”, this movie was about a girl Ayla, who lost her mother in an earthquake at a young age and was found by Iza a woman from the Clan who convinced the a group of cave people who were searching for a new cave to take in Ayla. Growing up Ayla was faced with a lot of tragic situations. However, she did not give up instead she allowed her difficulties to make her stronger. When Ayla first got around the cave people, everything was new to her and she had to learn to adapt to their lifestyle.
Before assigning the last assignment we read a Shakespeare play called Macbeth. The play wasn’t the most entertaining but, I was happy we were doing it with Mr. Toby. If we had done it with Mrs. Guenette she probably would have made us read it by ourselves and if we didn’t understand something she wouldn’t help us. With Mr. Toby we read it as a class and he
I am sitting at my desk pondering the lessons learned during the past eight weeks of my life. It is unbelievable to think that this class was actually going to be enjoyable since the study of theory is usually met with an ugh and a sigh by the student and those they tell of their coursework. Much to my surprise, I actually enjoyed the material presented.
