I found the readings for this week to be very interesting, with the Lucy Green piece being my favorite of everything we’ve read so far. The concept of transfer was already my favorite topic of discussion in this class, so getting to analyze it in the context of musical meaning and interpretation is fascinating! I’m genuinely disappointed that I wasn’t about to attend the in-class discussion. Thankfully, was able to get a little insight into the class’s discussion and activities after talking with my roommate, Tyler. He said that you had everyone come up with two meaningful ways that you could inquire into your students’ lives. Inherent meaning refers to the physical properties of the music, and what they tell us about other parts of the music. For example, if were hear a big drum roll, most would assume that it’s in preparation for a big chord or some other important musical moment. Delineated meaning refers to the sound of music, and what connections to non-musical ideas it causes us to make. For example, the timbre of a banjo will make most people think of country music and the south, regardless of what genre it is actually playing. As Green puts it, “with inherent meaning the process of signification occurs from sound to sound, whereas with delineation it occurs from sound to non-sound.” I couldn’t agree more with what Lucy Green has presented. Throughout my many years of private piano lessons, I had the opportunity to play many different pieces from many different time periods. When playing a piece for a first time, I would always play very slowly and listen to the shape of the melody and the form of the piece, allowing my ears to predict what I was about to play next. In addition to this inherent meaning, I would simultaneously be drawing connections to other songs, childhood memories, or emotions.
