The vocabulary lesson itself was too easy for Delaina using the passage with nonsense words The syllabic analysis and comprehension worksheets were easy but not too easy to where she didn’t have questions or need the extra guidance. Yes, for each concept Delaina understood what concepts were being taught. The problems that arose during the lesson was I had to loop back to syllabication for a few words that Delaina encountered in order to remind her of the syllable patterns in order to pronounce a few words. As I explained earlier, during the vocabulary lesson while independently working on the Tom Sawyer passages she became frustrated with the assignment and I chose to alter the assignment. I used an alternate matching sheet for her independent …show more content…
Next time, I would have started with a review of the syllable types and go over what short and long vowel sounds sound like to gain an understanding of what the student knew and also use it as a review. In my comprehension lesson I would add the video as an anticipatory set. Instead of using the Tom Sawyer passages as independent practice in the vocabulary lesson for all, I would use a different worksheet that is multiple choice. From there I would use another paragraph but take out the multiple choice options to ensure the students have an understanding. The Tom Sawyer passages would not be on a worksheet but would provide the entire text with certain areas so they will have more to read to help figure out the underlined words. All of my objectives were met and I altered instruction by reflection and checking for understanding and allowed that to guide my process. During Delaina’s period of frustration I was sensitive to her needs and noticed the change in her body language and overall appearance and made changes to the lesson. I was excited and positive throughout the lesson. Although everything didn’t go as planned I remained calm, positive, and supportive throughout the lesson.
Through this experience I learned that as teachers we must be reflective before, during and after. This will affect my future teaching because I will allow students to have wait time, alter lessons, differentiate instruction, and reflect. Everything that I have learned in this class and through the field experience has provided me with tools that I can use to become a better
Being in this class gave me insight on the way that I learn. I’ve had my share of jobs along with schooling and various other learning experiences. Some good, some bad but I can honestly say that I never noticed the pattern on how I learn. Now I know I learn more by being more of a hands on person. Also utilizing my thinking and problem solving skills has helped with my growth. I also found it important to use my reflective observation too. Mostly combining different learning styles have helped me in life to understand the way I learn and the benefits that could come if I use my strengths to further my ambitions.
What have you learned from the assessment, guided reading, and tutoring experiences that you would be able to apply in your future classroom?
By doing Module 1 of this course I had opportunity to think about my career as a teacher. In order for me to improve learners’ learning I have to create for them appropriate environment using different teaching strategies in which every learner feels respected and safe. Learners need to know that learning has a purpose and what they are learning it is relevant to their lives. Also it is important to provide them with feedback regarding their progress on what they are trying to achieve, how far they are from the goal that was set. And how to achieve all I have to keep on trying new things and improving teaching skills. The actual teaching, classes I attended for this course gave me opportunity to better myself as a teacher. I learned about teaching principals from our teaching classes, later applied my knowledge in my actual teaching practice and also learned about teaching ideas through the web. From all these I understood that my development as a teacher should never end because teaching is a part of a life-long
One aspect of my lesson that I felt went well in the implementation of my lesson was the information being grasped by the learners. Before I began my lesson, I asked the learners some questions about the fun phonics letter. I started off by asking the children if they knew what the fun phonic letter for the week was, then I asked them to tell me some words that begins with the letter “Dd”. Next, I read a story called “Harry the dirty dog”. Throughout the story I asked some questions to keep the learners engaged. I asked them questions like “what words that begins with the letter “Dd” did you hear?” I can tell they were engaged because their answers were never off topic. The learners were so excited about the end result of their letter “Dd”
Overall, the theories, methods and strategies learned throughout this program have allowed me to be a better teacher in the sense that I don’t look at the whole picture anymore. I pick apart each piece of puzzle to see how I can better each student as an individual. This will let my students to become investors in their education, as well as allow me to become a better teacher.
A large part of this lesson that I wanted to teach kids was how think about the meaning of the prefixes in the context of the sentence, and how to use the prefixes to make meaning within the sentences. While I scripted some in my lesson plan, due to distractions and time constraints during the lesson, I do not feel like I made that as explicit as I needed to. I believe had I modeled more, Dashawna would have had an easier time completing the activity. I also fear that Jo’rel, while he was able to complete the activity successfully, relied more of his knowledge of the words themselves then on contextualizing the meanings of the prefixes within the sentences. If this part of the lesson were longer when I did this lesson again, then I could make the modeling more explicit and discrete and I think that would even further strengthen my student’s
It also made it very easy for him to correlate the concepts with the readings. The strategies I used for this lesson was vocabulary cards and hands-on experience. The formal assessment I used was the SOLOM observation. During the SOLOM observation, I noticed that Gabe struggled with pronunciation. So, reading out loud helped him better his speaking skills. The formative assessment I used was the worksheet which helped me assess his comprehension skills. The thing I took away from this last session is that his vocabulary knowledge grew tremendously. He was able to connect many of the previous lessons to the current lessons and that was my intention. To have Gabriel see why working out is so important and why It can be very
My measurements of success are found in each and every student I teach. One of the most rewarding experiences I have had while student teaching, was watching a child’s face light up at the pivotal moment when they grasp a new concept or master a new skill. In fact, those “aha” moments are my motivators which feed my desire to look for better ways to ensure all students experience those same “aha” moments. As an effective teacher, I am determined and dedicatef to the continual process of researching, implementing, collecting and analyzing data to ensure I am improving upon the curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessment used in my classroom. Learning is a never-ending process. The better skilled I become as a teacher, the better the learning experience I can provide for my students. Therefore, the more I actively research, implement, and reflect, the greater the opportunity for giving my students the education they deserve and hopefully, the inspiration to pursue their own lifelong love of learning.
The vocabulary within the story was slightly unfamiliar to her. For example the circumference, radius, and perimeter were the ones she had the most trouble with. While we were working on the “Circles Overhead” activity I explained and showed her what the meaning of each vocabulary word because it was new material for her. While we were working on the word problems she understood the exercise very well and did it mostly without my help, the only trouble she had was multiplying large
What is the most important concept that you learned in this class? Write this for a reader who is unfamiliar with the concept.
How have your observations from when you were student teaching influenced your teaching skills and your classroom?
I have learned lots of lessons throughout my first semester of field experience. I have picked up many techniques to teach math lessons. I also learned that you will know which child to battle with and if it is worth fighting with the child or do you just let it go. There was a child in my class who would always not want to do his work and throw a tantrum. My teacher would somedays
In summary, this course has really educated my view of being a teacher as well as being able to interact with today’s diverse and fluctuating educational setting. Therefore, the discussions were very good ways in understanding how
After taking this course I have personally learned so much about mathematics and effective ways on how to teach certain topics in my future classroom. I believe that this course was taught in a way for me to advocate for how I teach myself mathematics. When I knew I was taking this class I was very nervous at first. Mathematics is not my strongest subject so automatically I felt as though this class was going to be a long struggle for me. Once I had a couple class periods I grew more and more comfortable with the math we were learning. I learned to teach math to myself again. I had to teach myself math concepts that I learned way back in elementary school that I completely forgot how to do. In this class we learned a lot about how elementary math is done now a days. Also how now a days there is more than just using the traditional algorithm to solve equations.
I think this course has more prepared me for teaching in higher education through providing various perspectives and considerations around diverse challenges within a teaching and learning environment. This course taught about effective teaching practices that encourages a teaching professional to
