Dehumanizing Death Penalty

As Cass R states… “Capital punishment may be morally required, not for retributive reasons, but rather to prevent the taking of innocent lives”. Death penalty is one of those extreme punishments that would create fear in the mind of any person. If murderers are sentenced to death and executed, potential murderers will think twice before killing for fear of losing their own life.

Some may think that the death penalty is a good punishment though. Their reasons being that is more humane to put someone to death than to throw them into prison to rot for the rest of their life. Inmates who receive the life without parole punishment will never see the light of day ever again. They will spend their whole life knowing that someone else was able to escape their hell by being given the death penalty. To add on to that while they live their life out, they are stuck thinking about the crimes they have committed for the rest of their existence, no matter how much they regret what they have

Thousands of people will attack the death penalty. They will give emotional speeches about the one innocent man or woman who might accidentally get an execution sentence. However, all of these people are forgetting one crucial element. They are forgetting the thousands of victims who die every year by the hands of heartless murderers. There are more murderers out there than people who are wrongly convicted, and that is what we must remember.

The death penalty is one of the worst punishments for criminals. There are so many problems rooted in the death penalty.I believe we should get rid of the death penalty because they could be killing an innocent person that has been convicted. We should also get rid of the death penalty because killing someone is more expensive than keeping them in jail for life.People on death row are promised a quick death not a slow and painful one but there have been times when prisoners are taking longer to die and its more painful than it should be.

They say the death penalty is inhumane, but people will never know unless they have someone close to them killed, raped, mutilated in ways that couldn’t even be replicated in the movie theaters. Who could possibly be qualified to make such a judgment? Is it judges or jurors? Is it even ethically or morally correct to do so? Since the beginning of time, different methods of execution have been used. These forms have been hanging, guillotine, gas chambers, electric chair, drowning, torched, and firing squads. The first recorded execution was in 1608 and it was for treason. The creator of the death penalty was King Hammurabi of Babylon, and it could be issued for 25 different crimes. Throughout time the British improvised it and it influenced every other country, specially the United States. Some countries use it as a form of population control, others as a show of force. But even still to this day, the world is still individually split on whether they should keep the death penalty or abolish it. The reason people still to this day argue the fact that the capital punishment should be used, is because it bring a sense of satisfaction to the family of the victim, it puts fear within society’s, it eliminates over crowdedness within the prisons, and the mental and physical stress inmates go through. Many states don’t allow the death penalty anymore and I believe it’s because they think its inhumane and a morally wrong thing to do. I don’t believe all criminals should be sentenced to death, just criminals who will spend the rest of their lives in prison. There is just no reason to pay for a criminal to live their entire lives in jail, for committing a horrible crime, just because it is a morally wrong thing to sentence a person to death. Criminals who murder have already committed an inhumane crime by murdering innocent people. We are doing the humane thing by removing them from our society, because they will and cannot do anything positive for our society anymore.

However, who gets to determine ones actions as being “just” enough? It isn’t a consistent form of punishment. Also, the death penalty just imposes fear among the people. Granted, if one is to get the death penalty they clearly are doing something that is highly against the law, but the death penalty promotes fear from the system. The death penalty is the only suitable punishment for murderers. The death penalty insures that criminals know that if they kill they will be killed, and they are going to receive a harsh punishment. Also it could be cheaper than sentencing a prisoner to life in prison. People feel that the death penalty is too harsh of a punishment. Which that would be a harsh punishment but they took another human's life. So they need to have a harsh punishment so people know they can not get away with murder. The death penalty insures that a murderer won’t kill again.

The Death Penalty has aided or the U.S. in times where large crimes have been committed and the perpetrator has been convicted for their crimes. When the prisoner is taken into prison, they take up more space in another prison where it already is overcrowded. Secondly, Tax money that is taken away from law abiding citizens is given to prisons to care for them. Yes, there are some naysayers that disagree with this argument that would like to share their opinion. Surely this can help them understand that the death penalty helps more than it hurts.

Do you know what the penalty is death? Death penalty is a government sanctioned practice whereby a person is put to death for a crime they are being prosecuted for. What makes a criminal is he or she does something against the law or something that violate the rights of this country. Death has killed thousands of people and it needs to be stopped or the system needs to be fix. Statistics say that a lot of people have been on death row or have been threaten to get the death penalty. Not all criminals get it, but that is up to the court to give you death row or not. I think that not all criminals deserve the death penalty because, punishment won´t fit the crime, cost a lot of money, and life have been torn apart.

The death penalty is legalizing the very thing that many on death row are charged for, murder. There is a multitude of lawful alternatives, to the death penalty, of reestablishing a better reputation for the criminals. The Constitution has no true right to allow such a felonious form of rehabilitation.

I strongly believe in the death penalty because it deters crime. According to James Pitkin (2008) “Advocates of the death penalty argue that it deters crime, is a good tool for police and prosecutors (in plea bargaining for example), makes sure that convicted criminals do not offend again and is a just penalty for atrocious crimes such as child murders, serial killers or torture murderers.”

The death penalty does not deter criminals from committing crime. Most criminals who commit crimes do not have intentions of being caught and believe that they are invincible from the repercussions of their actions. Because of this, the death penalty really does not deter criminals from committing a crime. In fact, the death penalty could be considered an “easy way out” because the criminal does not have to spend several months, years, or even the rest of his or her life behind bars with little contact with the outside world. The criminal can just die and no longer have to suffer with knowing what he or she did, how it has affected others, and how it will continue to affect his or her life. Also, many criminals end up committing suicide in prison because they do not want to have to spend every day locked in a jail cell for extended periods of time.

Death penalty sends a bad message to the society. The people in the society are made to believe that human life has no value, and when one commits a heinous crime like murder, they deserve to die. This is a bad message to the society because, the society should be taught to respect each others life and that every individual has a right to life. A humane society does not kill or support the killing of their fellow human beings, therefore, capital punishment is a violent homicide that teaches the society the permissibility of killing in order to solve social issues, and this is a bad sign. Hence, death penalty should not be allowed because it is the worst example to the society.
