Pursuing a degree in counseling is a task that is both exciting and scary at the same time. There are many processes in which the new graduate student goes through not only academically, but also in their personal life. This journal entry provides a short perspective of how life change for one student. Here, one can find some of the thoughts and feelings a new counselor in training (CIT) experienced during enrollment, beginning class, and some of the changes made to fit graduate studies into life. To begin with, many who choose to go into counseling do so for different reasons. In the case of one particular student, the motivation came after seeing the impact a counselor could have with her clients and seeing the need within the community. …show more content…
Once the student begins to get more comfortable with the online format as well as the requirements of the course, some of the stress levels begin to settle. This is particularly important to the counselor in training since it allows for better retention of the material presented. For this reason, one of the recommendations Ottawa has for new students is to take time before the start of the first class on their online Orientation Blackboard. By doing so, the student will lower their anxiety levels by learning how the system works, where to locate the syllabus and online materials needed for the course, how to turn in assignments, as well as how to contact the instructor. Whenever new students take advantage of this learning experience, they will find themselves feeling with less apprehension about their first course. One student’s experience in the counseling graduate program was that it did required time and dedication in order to keep up with the reading assignments, discussion questions and replies, as well as quizzes and assignments due each week that was stated in the course …show more content…
As mentioned above, there are specific times when each assignment is due each week. Thus, time management skills need to be utilized in order to consistently turn in assignments on time. For many who are in the counseling program the adjustments can be difficult to achieve at first, given that it lessens their leisure time or because it takes time away from their family members. Adjustments are not only difficult for those in the program, but also those close to them. However, one important piece of advice is to focus on quality time with family members. Having good communication about the expectations graduate school requires with family members is also important in order to obtain both emotional support as well as assistance in other
As the standards of the counseling profession are continuously being shaped, I desire to play a role in the educating
Has there ever been a time in your life where you were going through something and felt sad, and alone? Well I have, and i’ve came across many people who have also. When going through something everyone needs that someone who is there for them to listen, and give advice. In the future, I want to be that someone. My passion is helping people, since I was about 5 I’ve always enjoyed helping out people by doing a variety of things.
A counselling relationship is likened to being on a journey - a beginning, middle and end (Smallwood, 2013). During the beginning phase the client develops sufficient trust in the counsellor and the relationship ‘to explore the previously feared edges of his awareness’ (Mearns and Thorne, 1988, p.126).
My main reason for wanting to counselor individuals, families, and groups is because I enjoy helping people and I would like to see them overcome their current issues. Also, I enjoy reading about psychology and counseling. Honestly, I am more passionate about studying the field of counseling than I am practicing it. I feel that my journey may lead me to researching. But throughout my career, I plan to display professionalism to help my clients.
My commitment to my goal of receiving a Master’s degree in counseling has been demonstrated throughout my studies at Rollins by maintaining a GPA of 4.0, my willingness to support my cohort, and by exhibiting an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Although I had retired on a fixed income from a business career due to a disability, I have confirmed my potential, stamina, and desire to counsel through my volunteer work as a guardian advocate, working with people who suffer from addiction, and by remaining an advocate for the LGBTQ community. I have thrived with my undergraduate internship at the Center for Drug Free Living and with my prepracticum at Centaur.
The choices we make early in life have an enormous impact on our future. I have always known that I wanted to directly impact people’s lives and my personal experiences have set me on the school-counseling path. In the future, I would love to influence another generation of students to soar for their dreams.
However, like many of my peers in the undergraduate community, I had a declared major but a persisting uncertainty and indecision about my future and career. Nevertheless, I continued to see myself in a personal setting with clients, where I could share psychological insight to those willing to open up and partake in personal growth. Through years of information, coursework, wise words from professors, and much personal insight, I decided to pursue a career in counseling
When I was in fifth grade, my teacher informed me of an exciting opportunity. I had been selected to act as a peer mediator in my school guidance counselor’s office! I was thrilled at the prospect. The school counselor would guide me in the best ways to deal with student conflict. It was at this point I knew I would be well-suited for this sort of task. Though my undergraduate education was achieved in Aiken, South Carolina, I am called across the Savannah River to achieve a Master’s degree in the counselor education program. This is an important goal to me because working in an educational setting has always appealed to me. I also possess the ability to listen without judgment, positivity, and empathy towards others. These traits will benefit me in this line of work. I also recognize the challenges that this profession will bring. Addressing personal issues that might hinder client relationships will be made possible after receiving counseling education from Augusta University. It is important for me to become sensitive to diverse types of students. I must also prepare for the unpredictability of the job. My goal is to become educated at Augusta University in order to positively impact the lives of students as a school counselor.
As Mr. Cedant’s mentor and past colleague, I offer the highest recommendation for his acceptance into the Master of Arts Counselor Education (Mental Health Counseling Track), at the University of Central Florida. As a first generation college student, Mr. Cedant exemplifies determination and commitment. His ability to remain committed to his goals and responsibilities is admirable and a great indication that he will surpass the requirements, preparations, and expectations of this program. Before starting graduate school I did not know that counseling was a distinct profession from psychology. I enjoyed learning that counseling was born from the educational field with a wellness focus rather than a medical focus (Granello & Young, 2012, Remley & Herlihy, 2010). In different classes, we learn how counselors are different from other mental health professionals. For example, we discussed how psychiatrists and psychologists focus on the biological and psychological factors that influence mental illness, and social worker seek the environmental factors that address a person’s wellness. Counselors operate in the niche between psychologists and social workers. I was excited to learn the new opportunities and training available as a student in a distinct field to address unique
The role of a counselor takes on many different forms, and it is a very important career, because it helps people make better life choices. The personal values we have, and also how we view the world, can help shape the type of counselor we will be. I will take a self-reflective view of what I hold dear, and also explain how my personal experiences have led me to chose a career in this particular helping profession. I will also describe the differences between the professional counseling, and other helping professions, such as social work for an example. I also will look at how accreditation, licensure, and certification, are important in defining what a counselor is, and does.

School counseling as always caught my attention. When I started my higher education, I had a focus on studying Elementary Education. However, after completing a college assignment for one of my psychology course, I found a very interested area in Psychology which is counseling. Since then, I have falling in love with counseling, and have spent a lot of time researching the career. I have conducted different interviews and have engaged in different counseling events that have helped me get to know the career. Therefore, when given this assignment, I felt more than prepared because I have spent a lot of time researching this career. However, I used the given source, ONET, to have more of a broad understanding about School Counseling.
Looking back, I now have higher expectations about the duties of a school counselor and acknowledge the areas in which the counseling department at my school lacked. Most notably being that I was never given any traditional form of counseling. Unfortunately, I think this is due to the this growing field having not yet obtained its identity of a counseling emphasis. I knew that I could go to my counselor for academic advisement, I was sure that I would get more assistance if I struggled with my classes, but I do not believe that my counselor took an active approach of inquiring about mental health. Instead the counseling department seemed focused on student’s only when grades were down.
