The Columbian Exchange introduced a new connection between the newly found Americas and locations in the old world such as Africa and Europe, but this trade was only introduced in 1492. Prior to 1492, the Americas and the old world had no connection with each other, for they had no idea they even existed until Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to try and find a back entrance into the Chinese spice trade. Before 1492, the Americas kept to themselves without true unity; they had many different empires such as the Incans, Aztecs, and Mayans that grew their own private crops to feed themselves. There occurred little trade between the empires of the Americas. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, however, Europe had a strong …show more content…
For example, deforestation occurred in the Americas. When the Spanish first arrived in 1492, the Native Americans had not enforced massive amounts of deforestation through labor systems such as the MITA system, for the labor systems were mainly used to tend to crops that were already good enough for the native people living on the land. Unfortunately, the Spanish people were exceedingly interested in the goods that were already being grown there, so in order to make a greater profit, the Spanished enforced massive deforestation. Trees, such as Redwood Trees and Pine Trees, were cut down to make more room to grow plants. Nearing 1750, the main use of this deforested land had become for cash crops, such as sugar cane shipped from Africa. This sugar cane was shipped to mass produce because sugar was worth a lot when being traded, so Europe would use the possible profits of these sugar canes as a motive to produce more; therefore, deforestation occurred for the cash crops that would be used as an item traded in the Columbian Exchange. Deforestation also occurred in Europe as well because the crops from America, such as tomatoes, maize, and potatoes were shipped through the Columbian exchange into Europe. Europe unfortunately did not have much room to mass produce these foods from the Columbian Exchange, so people began deforestation on the land. Due to the deforestation on trees such as oak trees and birch trees, Europe was able to help feed their people with all the crops shipped from the Americas in the Columbian
The Columbian Exchange has been one of most significant and distinguished events in the world history, this exchange had negative and positive effects to the development of the world. However, the primordial positive effect of the Columbian Exchange was the integration of the old world and the new world. The Columbian Exchange was the first event of globalization, where the two isolated continents were connected to a new interchange of ideas and goods. The Columbia Exchange expanded to a colossal
The Columbian Exchange increased the spread of religion in both regions because trading brought in new culture and belief system. The practice of Christianity increased in the Americas because when the Europeans invaded they rooted Christianity into the America. In the western Europe, christianity was their main religion, but later on other religion was brought into their regions. The Columbian Exchange affected West Europe and America's economic. The columbian exchange increased the America’s
Exchange on the Americas and Africa The Columbian Exchange between 1492 and 1750 has had a detrimental effect on both the Americas and Africa. The exchanges of plants, animals, and foods between the two regions have shared similarities through the mass transfer of populations and overexploitation of land. However, a difference was that the movement of diseases affected the Americas more than Africa in result of the exchange. These demographic and environmental effects have played an essential role
While many argue against the idea of the detrimental effects environmental destruction, numerous events in history have known to show otherwise such as in the Columbian Exchange, the Industrial Revolution, and Westward migration. The Columbian Exchange was perhaps one of the first environmentally detrimental event in American history. This exchange refers to the trade of food, goods, and disease between the Old World, referring to the eastern hemisphere, and the New World, referring to the Americas.
When people think of the Columbian Exchange they remember all of the great things such as the exchange of goods that we cherish today. Things such as crops, ideas, and animals between the Old World(Afro-Eurasia) and the New World(The Americas) that helped to cultivate the world we live in today. But at what price did this diffusion of goods cost? Although the Columbian Exchange brought the goods we value today such as animals, plants, and the exchange of ideas, It would also bring long term effects
Spanish competition. This sparked the chain of expansion among the world in the 16th and 17th centuries. Previous trade networks were efficient before the 15th century, although they did not share their qualities of life as countries did in the Columbian Exchange. Trading often arose through paths and set destinations. Take
referred to as“Indians”, he showed them a sword and “they took it by the edge and cut themselves out of ignorance” (Document 1). It would be Columbus’s first impression of these New World occupants that would lead to future horrible events. The Columbian Exchange was not an overall positive event for the New World because Columbus and his spanish conquerors inflicted an appalling amount of death, destruction and war like ideas and behaviors to a land that had been previously peaceful and fertile. The Columbian Exchange is often looked at and thought of for all of the good things it brought, like the exchange of animals, plants, and food between the Old World and the New World. But the Columbian Exchange also included the transfer of diseases between Europe and the Americas. Old World diseases were transferred European sailors to Native Americans. The diseases played at least as big of role in defeating the Native Americans as advanced weaponry did (Craig). In the first 20 years after

As a result of the Columbian Exchange, a worldwide sea trade that connected the “Old World” and the “New World”, many agricultural goods such as corn, potatoes, and sweet potatoes were introduced to civilizations in Europe and Asia. The exchanges that occurred greatly impacted Europe and China in many different ways but specifically economically and agriculturally. The introduction of corn and potatoes led to the crops becoming widely cultivated after proving to be profitable crops leading to economic
singularly planted, this drained the nutrients from the soil. The sweet potato was the most popular crop coming from the New World because corn competed with rice. The sweet could be planted almost anywhere. It also led to deforestation. The problem is significant because the deforestation made the floods even more popular. Which caused hundreds of floods. The floods led to the death of millions of people. When the floods occurred they took away crops, soil, and nutrients in the soil. The best solution
The Columbian Exchange is the exchange of plants, animals, food, and diseases between Europe and the Americas. In 1492, when Christopher Columbus came to America, he saw plants and animals he had never seen before so he took them back with him to Europe. Columbus began the trade routes which had never been established between Europe and the Americas so his voyages initiated the interchange of plants between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, which doubled the food crop resources available to people
The Columbian Exchange, also known as the Grand Exchange, was introduced by Alfred W. Crosby in 1972. It was an exchange of an entire variety of both plants and animals between the New and the Old Worlds. One Old World plant which made its ways to the Americas in the beginning of colonization and made the front line of an immense exchange program was the coffee tree, which has huge effects on the economy, is included at numerous social capabilities, and has critical ecological consequences relying
1. When thinking of modern cities people think skyscrapers, busy traffic, etc. They also might envision a place like New York or Washington DC. 2. In China, they re-imagining the world city by building more skyscrapers, better transportation, and bigger cities. Urban residents also produce less CO2 than the average for their country 3. I think an urban life is more sustainable because it's more efficient than then a rural life. Most people even pay less for heat or cooling. people even produce
