“Courage is the discovery that you may not win, and trying when you know you can lose”- Tom Krause. Courage is something that we all need in our lives. Maya Runyan is blind but she doesn’t let that stop her, she has won 4 gold medals in the paralympics for women's running. Maya is a huge act of courage. There has been many debates saying that you can’t have courage without fear and being overly courageous leads to unnecessary risks, which are all very true. Sometimes it just comes down to being able to control fear and not let it take over. The real answer is that we need both in our everyday lives to balance each other.
You can’t have courage without fear. Think of it as if the world was peaceful, we wouldn’t need courage because there would be no fear involved. Fear is also set up for courage, like if there was a house on fire, our minds would be set on some way of helping and that leads to courageous actions. There is other cases where fear is common but no courage. If I had a fear of heights but was not willing to even try getting over it by going up high, is a situation where no courage was involved.

Back to the burning house story, if an everyday citizen comes to the rescue and doesn’t have any background information on how to be safe in that life situation, will likely backfire. That's when our over confident selves kick in and say that you are capable of anything. Sometimes we can be overly confident in what we say not just what we do. Talking yourself up about things that aren’t true just to make yourself look better, is also apart of being overly confident. Often times overly confident people can end up knowing the least and by doing and saying unrealistic things can not only make yourself look better but it can make yourself feel better and more
Instead of being afraid, be courageous and do not let fear affect difficult decisions. Courage is a choice everyone must make to overcome challenges. Though being courageous is hard, it always pays off. Even though it's easy to be scared, true courage is overcoming that fear. One example of overcoming fear is “The Ravine” by Graham Salisbury, in which a young boy named Vinny shows great courage by overcoming his fear of being bullied and standing up to peer pressure from his friends.
Courage is not facing a problem without any fear. Courage is facing an obstacle despite their fear. Standing up for what they believe in, even though there will be negative consequences. That is true courage. The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee does a great job of showing this.
“Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is being afraid and doing it anyway.” This quote said by Lou Gehrig explains that courage isn't about having no fear; but rather, it is about one being filled with fear and deciding that something or someone is greater than that fear. In the book, The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, by Jamie Ford, the protagonist, Henry Lee, turns against the will of his father and his own country values to run after forbidden love. Even though Lee is afraid, he courageously proceeds to follow his heart.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt famously once said, “The only thing to fear is fear itself”. What Roosevelt really meant by saying this is that the fear we have for something or someone will only make it worse. Courage, most often times, can be defined by the actions that someone makes as a result to something that they fear. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the main characters, Atticus, Scout, and Jem, face many fearful obstacles in which they have to overcome their fears to move through them. Although many readers may believe that Jem displays the most courage, Atticus is the one who truly displays the most courage due to the fact that he had to face many difficult tasks in the courtroom and at home. Despite all the hatred he received
Courage can mean a lot of different things and can also be shown different ways. People are courageous almost everyday of their lives. They take risks on things not knowing whether it might or might not work. In order to have courage doesn't mean you have to wrestle a bear or maybe jump off a plane, courage can simply be a person helping an elder cross the street or asking a girl you like, to out on a date with you. Although big things can make you seem like a superhero, the little things can also do the same.
“It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare”- Mark Twain. Courage may come easily to some, simply in their nature. For some simply making it to their front door is all they can manage. When the world outside is too much to handle, that it is easier for them to live their lives secluded. It is hard to be courageous when it seems that all odds are against you.
We don't develop courage by being happy every day. We develop it by surviving difficult times and challenging adversity." Barbara De Anglelis (Barbara De Anglelis). To many people, there are different perspectives of courage, some being: not being afraid, to overcome something challenging, and to stand up for what is right. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, courage is the ability to control your fear in a dangerous or difficult situation (Cambridge).

Courage is defined by Merriam-Webster as, “the ability to do something that frightens one.” In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the main characters have to understand what it means to be courageous in the face of prejudice. Growing up in Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression are two siblings named Scout and Jem. As they get older, they learn the true meaning of courage through the characters, Mrs. Dubose, Atticus, and Scout even sees courage through her own brother,
A great Greek philosopher Socrates once said “He is a man of courage who does not run away, but remains at his post and fights against the enemy.” Everyday we listen or read about many great bravery actions done by people and that’s how they will be remembered. Fear is exists in all of us. One cant be a hero or any courageous without fear. Being fearless is not a necessity to be courageous, one simply needs to overlook past or overcome their fears to get this quality.
