Deepwater Horizon Effect

Decent Essays

The National Wildlife Federation posted an article referring to the April 2010 oil known as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in which the author discusses the major impact that the spill had on the Gulf environment. This oil spill had detrimental effects on environment and the cleanup efforts caused an even more harsh impact on the numerous aquatic animals that are native to the Gulf. In the article, ‘The Deepwater Horizon’s Impact on Gulf Wildlife and Habitats’, the author tried to articulate the gravity of the damage caused by the spill and the long-term effect that the spill would have on the Gulf and its population of aquatic animals. The author of the article refers specifically to the whale, sea turtle, and dolphin population, as well …show more content…

The lack of specific information and research sources makes it very difficult, if not almost impossible, to verify the statistics on the deaths of aquatic animals that were caused specifically by the oil spill which results in a lack of logos. This blatant lack of sources and citations is found throughout the entire article, which makes it even more difficult to take the author serious. An example of this lack of source citation is: “The number of bottlenose dolphins in Barataria Bay and the Mississippi Sound – two places particularly affected by oil – are projected to decline by half. Multiple studies have determined that the injuries to bottlenose dolphins were caused by oil from the disaster” (National Wildlife Federation, 2016) This is a prime example of the way the author left out proof of his/her statements, especially in relation to animal injury or death. It would have been nice to have a source to verify that the population of bottlenose dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico is expected to decrease by half, and to have the why and how questions answered. This failure to cite sources carries on through the discussion of sea turtles, birds, whales, fish, the Gulf Floor, and the many habitats that are sustained in the Gulf of Mexico that were …show more content…

The author also did not go into any kind of detail of what type of recovery efforts have been made or are planned for the future in order to repair the damage. A bulleted list of the damages was provided in a manner that made them easy to read, but the author still failed to provide any solutions for the problem. No call to action, list of actions by the organization, or progress updates for what has happened over the last six years since the spill were placed in the article. This is a major problem as it made it seem as if the National Wildlife Federation is taking money from the donations they collect from the clicked links and not putting it toward the efforts to correct the damage in the Gulf. There are links incorporated in the article that take reader to other articles on the website to show what the organization has done to help clean up the spill and correct the damage done by it which is nice, but this information should have been placed in the article and cited rather than just being placed in as a clickable link. The reader’s emotions are appealed to throughout the article by the numerous mentions of statistics and numbers, however, this is not done in the best manner. This is an example of pathos, as the author pulls on the proverbial heartstrings of the reader. People that are sensitive to animal or
