In early American history, religion and government played pivotal roles and have continued to even today. However, the size of the roles religion and government have played have fluctuated in relation to each other. Religion had more sway over the government and the people in early American society, however today it has significantly less visible power over the government, it still holds influence over many of the people both as voters and officials, as well as legislation.
When settlers first arrived in the United States religious freedom was a priority. However, the freedom they sought was only extended to their own particular religion instead of universally. The entire community went to church and participated in religious activities (Source A). The entire society was based around the church and it’s teachings. Plymouth became a place where their religion was the law. The governing officials were often high ranking members of the church and the law were based off of religious doctrine. This allowed for those in authority to secure their power through religious rationales, leading to their government to be less of a democracy and seemingly more of a theocracy. Sin had become a punishable offense, what was seen as wrong from a religious standpoint shaped the morals of those who were in the government, and thus they shaped their laws accordingly (Source C). This affected the citizens as they received pressure both religiously and judicially to abstain from particular activities, for fear of being smote both by their God and their government (Source B). Thus, punishment was, as the laws were, twice as harsh for dissenters of political and/or religious policy. Roger Williams is a prime example.
