Imagine being bashed on my over a dozen kids online saying rude hurtful comments, would you not want someone to help solve this problem? In my DBQ there is seven different documents with seven different examples. After reading and doing extra research on the documents I think schools should be allowed to limit students’ online speech. I believe that the schools are trying to make this a safer place for students.
“We have freedom of speech, but you got to watch what you say” said the comedian Tracy Morgan. And he was correct. In this modern world today, numerous students abuse the First Amendment. Over the media, students are posting comments, videos, stories, etc. about other students and teachers. These students are cyberbullies. The schools should be allowed to limit students’ online speech because cyber bullying privacy and dignity are important, it hurts feelings, and affects the school.
In school, there is bullying and cyberbullying happening all the time. The problem with bullying and cyberbullying are that it can make schools a bad learning environment for the students and the teachers. I believe that many schools should limit online speech, for the sake of learning purposes. Three main reasons that schools should limit free online speech are that many people get hurt by cyberbullying, it disrupts school activities, and bullying can make a good environment a bad learning environment.
History DBQ Technology is a basic necessity for most people of this period. It has taken a great effect on the children of our age, however with this power they can say just about anything online, however should there be a limit to this power? The first amendment says that there can be no law that limits the freedom of speech, but there are certain limits that are given by the supreme Court. Many are not sure whether it is right to limit their speech, or to let them roam free. In my opinion schools should have the ability to limit their students speech to prevent the cyber bullying that occurs on their campuses, as it happens to many of the student population, creates a toxic environment for the teachers, and considering it is just like bullying, it should not be allowed either.
Schools and the public are wasting time and resources on the over-exaggerated issue of cyberbullying. Today, schools are wasting much of their time worrying about cyberbullying and in popular media it’s mentioned too much. Schools should not be allowed to limit online speech. It’s not needed since most students haven’t been cyberbullied, cyberbullying hasn’t been proven to be very disruptive and online gossip is not common.
On the issue of whether or not schools should be allowed to limit students’ online speech, I firmly believe that they shouldn’t. Doing so directly infringes upon the student’s first amendment rights to the freedom of speech, and for what? Numerous surveys have shown that cyberbullying isn’t a huge problem. Further, one document affirms the conclusion that cyberbullying is just another phase in the long-running evolution of bullying. With this essay, I aim to convince you that schools should not limit their students’ online speech, using my vast knowledge as well as cold hard facts.
Not knowing what to do with the problems. Should we stop stdentśmonline speech? My opinion is to limit studentś online speech so they can have less cyberbullying have no more harmful effect and to keep the civil right law. My opinion on cyberbullying is bad because lot of kids get hurt and harassed. The author states in document C,” K.K., who was a 12th grader at Musselman high school, used her home computer to create a discussion group on MySapce.com that accused a classmate ,S.N.,of being sexually promiscuous.¨(In document C
One of the reasons why schools should limit students online speech is a large variety of students and teachers get bullied or have been bullied in their lifetime. In February of 2010 and April of 2009 two surveys were taken, one for students and one for teachers. In the first survey it showed the number of boys and girls who have been bullied in their lifetime and
Schools should take action if there is harm being done to others. In Document A of” Should Schools Be Allowed to Limit Students’ Online Speech?”, they surveyed a random sample of 10-18 year-olds from a large school district in the southern US. It shows that girls are more likely to be cyberbullied. It also shows that girls are more likely to cyberbully somebody else. According to the graph, 25.1% of girls have been cyberbullied in their lifetime,
Students, parents, and teachers everywhere are being affected by cyberbullying and it is getting worse every day. With technology advancing as fast as it is, everything is starting to revolve around the internet even bullying. Cyberbullying is a problem especially in schools. As the rate of cyberbullying in schools increases, concerned citizens are raising the question: should students be punished for what they say online outside of school? While some people may say limiting students’ freedom of speech online is the best way to stop cyberbullying, the reality is limiting a students’ freedom of speech online is an unacceptable idea because it goes against the First Amendment, and, in truth, it would never get rid of the problem.
One reason why schools shouldn’t limit students’ online speech is not that many teachers get bullied on mobile phones, email, or over the internet. In document B it says that only 84.9% of teachers weren’t bullied. 15.1% for the teachers get harassed. Out of that 15.1%, 38.6% of the teachers say their lives
Students’ online speech has been a problem in some schools. Online speech is when we post something on social media. Some people think that schools should limit students online speech while others think that they should not limit their online speech. Schools should limit students online speech because it violates civil rights laws, students are the people who cyberbully the most, and many people are affected by cyberbullying. One reason students’ online speech should be limited is because it violates civil rights laws.
The purposes of schools include protecting and educating its students. Therefore, naturally, when a student is cyberbullying someone else, the school seeks to intervene. However, many argue that a school’s intervention of its students’ online speech is in violation of their First Amendment rights. Should schools be allowed to limit students’ online speech? That is, should schools be allowed to punish the things its students post online, even if they are done outside of school, and from their personal devices? The answer is clearly yes. From the concept, to the precedence, to the data, to a letter from the US Department of Education, evidences everywhere supports limiting students’
They said that students must learn themselves that they should not say something online that they wouldn't say in person. For example, if a student calls someone ugly online, they probably wouldn't say that in person. However, the school cannot do anything to stop this because they did it at home. The school systems cannot be held responsible for things that students do at home, and they should therefore, not be responsible to take action against cyber-bullying.
Out of the 1,454 students, seventy-three percent of them were bullied online at least once over a period of twelve months. Of those students who were bullied, fifty-one percent of them said that the person who bullied them was a peer of theirs (Wolpert). Professor of psychology and the author of the study, Jaana Juvonen, said that because students do not talk about what is going on with their parents or teachers because they are scared they might get in trouble, or because they think they have to learn how to deal with it by themselves “they suffer in silence” (Wolpert). Therefore, it “interferes with the ability to learn and makes many students want to withdraw” (Wolpert). This shows us what effects bullying done outside of the school has on students, during school hours and what that can lead to (dropping out of school). If public high schools monitored off campus cyber bullying it would make students, feel safer because they would know that someone is watching out for them and they do not have to deal with the problem by themselves. This would lead to students feeling more comfortable at school instead of fearing school, and providing a safer environment for students to learn in, and therefore keep them in school.
