David Rochester is a neophobic person due to his tendency of rejecting new things. His character is not good health wise because it can reduce his lifespan. On the other hand, he is too pessimistic on the idea of change (Bolman, & Gallos, 2011). As a Pessimistic employee he nurtures a constantly negative attitude in the workplace. These kinds of people naturally expect the worst of situations. Pessimists relate things in different ways for instance they see half empty glass rather than the positive side of half full. Confidence is essential because people are looking at him on how he behaves predominantly when things are going wrong. He is expected to remain composed and poise this will allow other members to be calm as well rather than panicking. These will help in increasing productivity as well as the morale of other employees. A good leader should be able to delegate. No matter how greatly David would like to do he cannot manage alone therefore he must learn how to share responsibilities with others. A good leader recognizes the importance of delegation rather than dealing with all the issues alone. Delegating to other colleagues shows the level of confidence you have in them this increases their morale in work. Moreover, David must be able to show commitment in his work he should be able to stick to his goals, objectives and commitment. These will prevent any form doubt and deceitful from the other workers. The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe inspired my creative project because I am a visual learner and I found quite a bit of interest in this specific writing. To have great leadership, there needs to be a leader-follower relationship. The relationship can’t be effective without inspiration, involvement, and support from both participants. To develop this alliance, the leader must give extra effort to reach out to followers. The only way a leader can be successful is if the follower trusts the leader. The most important characteristic of a leader is to set a good example for their followers.
To function properly, this commitment also requires that followers respect the leader. Though there is no way for a leader to coerce respect, he or she can foster it by being the best person he or she can. Above all, a good leader will always work to do the right thing in every situation. Good leaders are honest, trustworthy, and reliable. They avoid hypocrisy at all costs and are accountable to themselves and their followers. They help out others however and whenever they can and often make their followers their top priority. Good leaders acknowledge their own personal failings and weaknesses to themselves and others (Daft, 2015, p. 149). When they do slip up, good leaders quickly realize it, halt to their negative behavior, and apologize to those affected by it. A leader who follows these principles will garner respect from nearly everyone they encounter. He or she will build up an environment of respect within the organization and generate a culture where people feel committed to each other and to the mission.
Effective leaders must have certain characteristics and qualities in order to be effective in their position. In this class we have learned multiple different traits that leaders ought to have and that I want to have. Several of the most important traits to me are integrity, accountability, and humility. All of these traits in one way or the other, go hand in hand with each other. Without these I will not be able to be as effective a leader as potentially possible in my future endeavors.
Leadership is in an echelon above management in that there is almost an aura about a leader that compels followers to want the same things they want, as opposed to managers which get their followers to do what they want (Marker, 2010). Therefore, managers tend to utilize power, whereas leaders can be influential. Good leaders also have a vision – both a company vision and a personal vision, in which is instilled into followers. An effective leader will also have an understanding of ethical issues, who and what ethical decisions affect, and how issues should be handled. John Ferrell and John Fraedrich (2014) suggest that headstrong leaders know that ethics contribute to employee commitment, investor loyalty, and customer satisfaction (p. 16-17). Knowledge of these relationships aid leaders in being well-round and make leaders aware of the consequences of the actions taken decisions that are made.
