Analysis of Data and Identified Issues While reviewing the results of the most recent state testing data for Owasso, a common trend arose. The median OPI Score for each subject tested was lower for economically disadvantaged students. Furthermore, the percentage of students at or above proficiency was lower for every elementary school in the district, as demonstrating in Figure 1 above. This is certainly not surprising to anyone who has been in education for any amount of time, and the performance of economically disadvantaged students is a common focus of research. This project would be in alignment with Owasso’s mission statement, which is “to provide a safe environment that equips, educates, and empowers Owasso students on their journey toward outstanding character and success” (Strategic Plan, p. 4, 2016). We must ensure that we are equipping and educating ALL students in Owasso, which might mean providing additional support to this specific group of students. By focusing on this project, I will be using aspects of our organization to ensures that our district goals and mission are being enacted throughout the district (ELCC 1.2).
District Context
The city of Owasso is considered a fast-growing, upper middle class city with a population of 48,829 people (OSPR Report Card, 2016). It is a suburb of Tulsa, one of the biggest cities in the state, and home headquarters to several major corporations and aviation companies. 78% of the population is Caucasian, 3% African American, 7% Hispanic, and 12% other (Demographics, 2017). The average household income in Owasso is $84,896, which is over $20,000 higher than the average median income for the state (OSPR Report Card, 2016).
Owasso Public Schools has 9,672 students (OSPR Report Card, 2016). It has eight different elementary sites, each serving PreK- 5th grade, a 6th Grade Center, a 7th Grade Center, a 8th Grade Center, a Mid-High School which houses 9th and 10th graders, and a High School to service 11th and 12th grade students.
