The overall story of the epic poem, The Divine Comedy, by Dante is a guide for the lives of a sinner. It walks the living man through what could occur to them of either Good or Evil. In the poem Virgil leads Dante through the different stages of Hell. Then to the land between Heaven and Hell. Lastly to Virgil leads Dante to see a glimpse of the beautiful Heaven.
The very first stage of the epic poem is the Inferno. Inferno is a very good title for this section because it discusses Hell. In the poem Dante is stuck in the darkness of Hell. He can see the stars of Heaven but, the creatures of Hell block his way. Then a guide named Virgil is sent Dante’s way to lead him through the darks of the underworld. Virgil leads Dante through the different levels of Hell. The different levels of Hell are broke up into different categories of sinners. Sinners are places into a category based on the sins that they commit. The sinners get punished the same way based on the sins they commit. For example, in the first level of Hell resides the non-Christians. These people did not believe in God at all, these sinners are tortured by chasing a naked while being stung by hornets. I earlier stated this is the land between Heaven and Hell. This is where people try to make the decisions of the right path to take. In my opinion I see the Purgatorio the life on Earth for us humans. We try to make decisions every day that are right from wrong. Some of us may not believe in the Christian religion or any religion. Either side should know the values of right and wrong never the less. Being a good person may not get you through the gates of Heaven either. You do have a better chance of making it to Heaven with better decisions than worse decisions. Dante sees the mountain he will have to climb and the sins he will have to get washed away.
