Daniel Shays 's Influence On American History

In the book “Shays’ Rebellion: Authority and Distress in Post-revolutionary America”, Sean Condon shows us his outlook on how he saw post-revolutionary America to be within the late 1770’s and 1780’s. This book was released in 2015 by John Hopkins University Press, and was also made in a continuing book series by Peter Charles Hoffer and Willamjames Hull Hofer called Witness to History. Everyone knows that the Constitution is one of the most important documents in American history, but many people have never heard of Daniel Shays. Daniel Shays, a Revolutionary War veteran turned farmer, lived in Western Massachusetts after the war. He had planned on retiring from his military life from which he had fought for the ideals of the revolution. However, he was drawn back into military life fighting against the very government he battled to create.

Shays' Rebellion was an armed uprising in western Massachusetts that run from 1786 to 1787. The rebels, led by Daniel Shays were small farmers angered by debilitating debt and taxes and failure to repay such debts often resulted in imprisonment in prisons. This was viewed by many as unjust, unfair and primarily favoring those with money. The levying of the taxes was orchestrated so as to put money back to the coffers after the American revolution. Those adversely affected were small scale subsistence farmers and because of this, many found it extremely difficult to feed and cloth their families. There was also the issue of the tax system. Fredrick Douglas, was a man who was born into the cruel act of slavery, around 1818 in Talbot, his original, well per se birth name was Fredrick Augustus Washington Bailey, Fredrick Douglas was not a soldier, but he was a man who was known as one, he changed the history of America for time to come.

In 1756, Daniel Morgan was carrying supplies to Fort Chiswell. While doing this a British lieutenant hit him with his sword. This angered and made young Daniel Morgan furious. In response Daniel Morgan punched and knocked the lieutenant out. The British army gave him five-hundred lashes. These events developed Daniel Morgan's hatred for the British. He would eventually join the American army and have tremendous success  becoming an American Hero. Daniel Morgan took a stand against British to win the freedom we have today with his strategies and tactics on the battlefield.

(5) In Massachusetts, Daniel Shay led many farmers who were in debt to the courthouse to protest. Many of these farmers had fought in the war and when they came back they were in debt from all the taxes. This was later known as Shay’s Rebellion and since these farmers were in almost every state, state officials were afraid that this uprising would spread. Because of Shay’s Rebellion, the officials wanted to preclude further rebellion from occurring throughout the states. For if it did up rise, they knew their government would look even more unstable from other countries point of view. George Washington’s repartee was that their enemies would be happy to see that they were not able to govern themselves.

He was born on April 19, 1721 and was an early american politician and a lawyer. He was a Supreme Court Judge and came up with the idea to have a two-chambered congress. This eventually made the House of representatives. He also served in many other different things which includes serving as the first New Haven's mayor, and he served on the Five Committee which was responsible for writing the Declaration of Independence. He was one of the two founding fathers to sign all four of the major papers in the United States which were the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Articles of Confederation and the Articles of

“I hold it, that a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing” (Jefferson). Thomas Jefferson wrote these words in a letter to James Madison after hearing about Shay’s Rebellion while he was a foreign diplomat in Paris. After the rebellion happened, the “Shaysites” as they were called, were labeled as traitors to their country and the democratic form of government. But were they really? Many of the men fighting in the rebellion felt that they were being oppressed just as they had been under British rule.

The book 1776 by David McCullough tells the story of the military aspects of the American Revolution. McCullough writes the book from both the British and American point of views, creating a better understanding of what both sides were undergoing during the war.

Charles Lee, a general in the American Revolutionary war, is a historic figure in American history. Serving under George Washington, Charles Lee participated in a number of battles. However, history says Charles Lee was treacherous to the cause, all the while that he was in command during that time; he was acting in bad faith toward the Americans. His influence in the army was, at all times, mischievous (General Charles Lee: Traitor of the American Revolution). To the British, Charles Lee was a traitor who turned on England to fight under George Washington. Due to Charles Lee’s treacherous actions against America, it would lead to his downfall in the

Revolutionary War. He led his forces to victory over the British. which made him a national hero.

On September 27, 1722, Samuel Adams was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Adams attended and later graduated with a master’s degree from Harvard College in 1740. At Harvard College Adams studied law, but later decided to pursue politics. He started off his career as a tax-collector in Massachusetts, which he was not a very good one. Adams was elected to the Massachusetts Assembly in 1765, as a leader of the radical party. In 1774 he was elected to the First Continental Congress, then in 1775 he was elected again to be on the Second Continental Congress. Later he proudly signed his name to the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Before retiring in 1797, he served as lieutenant governor and governor of Massachusetts. Samuel Adams was raised on strict Puritan values, which are shown through his work.

Patrick Henry, and the colonies wanted freedom and independence from the British. To achieve the independence, peace and liberty they are striving to gain, they would have to put up a fight for it against Great Britain and start a revolution. The American Revolution, was also known as the American Revolutionary War consisted of the colonies and the British. It lasted from 1775 until 1783. Patrick Henry addressed the Virginia Convention on March 23rd, 1775. He saw no other option but to start a war with Great Britain. Henry agreed that a militia should be placed in every county of Virginia. He wanted this so they could prepare to fight and defend themselves from the

Daniel Boone was born on October 22, 1734 and later died on September 26, 1820. He was an American pioneer and hunter whose frontier explorations made him one of the first heroes of the United States. Boone is most famous for his exploration and settlement of what is now the state of Kentucky. Despite resistance from American Indians, for whom Kentucky was a traditional hunting ground, in 1775 Boone blazed the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap and into Kentucky. There he founded Boonesborough, one of the first English-speaking settlements beyond the Appalachian Mountains. Before the end of the 18th century, more than 200,000 people entered Kentucky by following the route marked by Boone.
