Everyone experiences issues in their daily lives, some traumatic and some common. Even some types of issues can be noisome. Some types of issues are: stress, learning disabilities, depression, autism, and even cancer. Having an outlet for these issues can make each day a little easier to manage. Therapy for the mind and the body can be found through dance, also known as dance/movement therapy (DMT). Through dance, the body and mind reacts in a way that people aren’t aware of. When engaged in dance as a means of therapy, the participant channels his/hers energy in a way that promotes a healthy mind and body. Martha Graham once said, “Dance is the hidden language of the soul.” This quote is an epitome on how dancing demonstrates and speaks what the mouth cannot. For that exact reason, dance therapy has positive outcomes for both physical and emotional aspects of life. Physically, dance therapy provides exercise, improvement of mobility and muscle coordination, and reduces muscle tension. Emotionally, dance therapy can improve self-awareness, self-confidence, interpersonal interaction, and communicating feelings.
