Everybody's path is different. Every player comes with different genetics, a different mindset, and vastly different circumstances. This is what makes basketball so special. The fact that there is no path, no set of rules or procedures to become a good basketball player. This is why we need to look at basketball differently. Basketball is not a profession. It's an art form.

This is the gap that separates the generic from the gifted. When we're young we always try to find out what makes the good players good. We watch film, decipher their moves and copy their jump shots. Little do we know that this is what holds us back. In art, replication doesn't create success, it creates mediocrity. By using what's already out there, we end up in the same place everyone else is. It's because they've perfected their own form of the art. They've become so good at their moves and their shot that nobody else can stop it. This isn't because they've studied the game for hours on end, perfecting everything they see other players do. It's because they've figured out what what they want to do on the court, and had the tools to make it happen.

The Tools

If Picasso couldn't draw a straight line, or Leonardo Da Vinci didn't understand the color wheel, they would never have been good painters. No matter how good the ideas were in their head, if they didn't have the skills to display them, then nobody would have payed attention to it.

This is the same in basketball. If you want to do something on the court but don't have the ability to do it, then there was no point in thinking about it in the first place. No matter how unique you art is, if you don't have the skills to illustrate it, your art is worthless. This is why no matter how you want to play, you need to have the skills to play that
