Best Buy is the 10th biggest online retailer in the united states and more than 1.6 billion users visit the company’s websites or the stores each year. Best Buy currently employs approximately 165,000 people and its world consumer electronics market share is 19 percent. Best buy unlike its competitors Amazon and Wal-Mart does not employ a low price strategy. The company’s recent strategy is concerned on delineation driven by employee training, online and in- store enhanced consumer experience. In 2013, the home segment operated under various brand names such as Best Buy, Pacific Sales and Magnolia Audio Video. The company opened 105 US Best Buy Mobile stand-alone stores and closed 47 US Best Buy stores, one US Best Buy Mobile stand-alone store and one Magnolia store. Best Buy continues to offer Geek Squad support services, and Best Buy Mobile store is still active. In the year 2014, there was expectation to close additional between five to ten US Best Buy stores by the company and open a small number of US Best Buy Mobile stores. To add on to this, it has a number of subsidiaries namely the Geek Squad, Pacific Sales, Future Shop and Magnolia Audio Videos. Its mission is making life fun and easy by making technology solve customer needs and helping the same customers to appreciate the benefits of technology. They also delivered positive operating income through their trajectory. They grew total market share in the third quarter according to the most recent public data available. They have closed down certain operations that were not profitable (according to recent reports), which they expect to have a positive impact on their earnings going forward. And they are focusing the company on areas where they see the greatest opportunities for growth and profit: mobile devices and connection plans; enhanced digital and e-commerce strategies; growth in their services business; and expansion of their established business in China.
Retailers have adapted to the online marketplace out of necessity and opportunity. The great recession placed many retail companies in financial hardship and while some failed, others innovated and became some of the largest companies in America such as Amazon. A recent trend is consumers are buying more products online than ever before. As a consumer, I enjoy shopping in the convenience of my home and having the items delivered to my doorstep in 48 hours or less. Global internet access continues to increase, with mobile devices and affordable internet for the home, consumers will continue to shift and buy products online rather than in retail brick and mortar locations.
