In the article, “What is a Culturally Responsive Educator?” the author makes a point that students at the age of eight already have a decreased desire to learn and low self-esteem. School is to blame for damaging their language, culture, and identity. The demographics of the population is changing. In the future, individuals that are born will be in the minority based on their ethnicity and race. This is not just happening in the cities, but especially in the rural communities. Teachers need to remember culture is not left at the door; it follows everyone into the classroom. Classrooms will be filled with a variety of students coming from many different cultures and backgrounds. Teachers need to acknowledge each student will be different in this aspect and will have had different experiences in their lives. As the class moves forward, the goal is to provide students with the same experiences, just with through different lenses. First, teachers must foster a relationship with their students and the students’ parents. It is important to understand the different perspectives of fears, hopes, and dreams the students set and what the parents want for their children. Second, students should be held to high standards and be praised for reaching these standards. No matter the student’s level, high standards should be expected. Next, teachers can use role play and cooperative learning to bridge the communication gap for the students because not all of the students will speak the same language at school as they do at home. It also helps students to be the center of instruction and ask questions as the teacher facilitates the learning.
