Cultural Traditions in Love Affairs
A story in which a conflictive relationship between two characters is featured is Annie Proulx’s ‘’Brokeback Mountain’ which takes place in a mountain in Wyoming, USA. The conflict between the protagonists, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, arises from the unavoidable fact of having feelings for each other, which represents opposing cultural traditions they grew up with. Ennis once told Jack that ‘’There is no rein on this one. It scares the piss out a me.’’(269) There is nothing that can destroy the force of love but these two country boys get afraid of what society thinks and decide to keep it a secret.

Most of the days spent in the mountain, Jack and Ennis talked about how their parents and family have shaped their behaviors and life. A common characteristic between the two protagonists is the life they had through childhood and adolescence. The boys understood each other when talking about the past and due to this fact they felt more connected during conversations. By telling past experiences they have never shared with somebody else brought feelings even closer to each conversation. One day, the boys started drinking, talking about their parents’ beliefs and once the sun was down they were both drunk. Ennis decided to sleep outside because he had to ride out in the next morning and Jack slept in the tent. As the night was passing by, the climate was changing and it got very cold to the point that Jack heard Ennis teeth chatter. Jack woke up and said ‘’Ennis, quit hammerin’ and get in here.’’(259) The boys were in the tent sleeping during a very cold night, the climate was an opportunity for them to get closer. Jack took Ennis’ hand and guides it inside waking up Ennis and realizing where his hand was. Ennis got to his knees, unbuckled his belt and Jack didn’t turn him down. In the morning, Ennis first woke up and realized his pants were pulled down. Jack woke up and got out of the tent but Ennis did not say a single word. Ennis quickly went to watch the sheep and realizes that one of them is dead. Boys were playing and Jack
Westminster is the location of the Houses of Parliament, where the majority of political decisions (other than those for devolved states) are made for the nation. The current Westminster electoral system is First Past the Post (FPTP) which is used for general elections every 5 years (due to the new fixed-term parliaments brought in by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition.) The FPTP system is constituency based, each person votes for a representative for their constituency and whichever party wins the most constituencies gains governmental power. First Past the Post works on the basis of a plurality of votes, that is, that the winning party need only gain the most votes out of all parties to gain power, they do not need an overall
Mateship in Australian Films Mateship has long been a major aspect of the national image as projected by Australian films, yet the moralities of mateship and the image of men as mates did not go unchallenged. Australian cinema as a significant part of the whole industry of image-makers in the country, the way it portrays mateship, the single most important mythic element in the cultural identity of Australia, is worth analysing. This paper first reviews the historical background of mateship in Australia and its contemporary development. The review here serves as a general discussion of mateship that provides the potential readers with some basic understandings of the idea, and as background
As living and breathing human beings people are bound to experience some type of conflict. Conflict can be present within a person, between two people, between a person and forces of nature, and even between a person and their society. Conflict is defined as the struggle that shapes the plot in a story (Clugston, 2014, ch.4sect.1 para.4). When reading a piece of literature, especially a short story, one should pay special attention to the central conflict because it is the key element of the story (Clugston, 2014). This essay will analyze “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin and “Sweat” by
They actually talk about it, how much better this is than with any woman. It shows them close, it shows them getting personal, even discussing the possibility of running away together. The movie did not discribe the emotional intimacy Jack and Ennis shared even before they had sex. Ennis's emotional transformation in Jack's company appears in the book with the line, "Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon." The deep friendship does not reveal in the movie, the way the book does, which was the foundation for their love. (Walford, Compare/contrast the book vs. the movie, ennisjack, 2006)

The setting of the novel takes place on a peaceful, life giving island. However, once the boys came to the island, the island slowly became consumed in darkness as the boys became more savage like. Towards the beginning of the novel, Golding emphasizes the light hearted mood by describing the brightness and beauty of the island,” The palms that stood made a green roof, covered on the underside with a quivering tangle of the reflection from the lagoon.”(pg 12). Just like the island, the boys start out as peaceful boys when they first arrive on the island. However, as the boys became more corrupted by savagery, so does the island and Golding effectively uses this in the scene where the boys lose control of themselves and in their bloodlust, kill Simon,”The clouds opened and let down the rain like a waterfall…” (pg 153). Golding’s use of the setting shows the evil in humans by giving the reader a mental illustration of the progression of the island turning from paradise to despair, much like how Jack starts out as a normal boy, but progresses into savagery.
According to Ann Charters in The Short Story and its Writer, "conflict is the opposition presented to the main Character of a narrative by another character, by events or situations, by fate, or by some aspect of the protagonist's own personality or nature. The conflict is introduced by means of a complication that sets in motion the rising action, usually toward a climax and eventual resolution" (Charters 1782).
This causes Jack to be driven off the edge in hatred, which also causes his family to be in danger of abuse yet again.
Each story ever written has many literary elements within it. Elements such as setting, characters, resolution, plot, and lastly conflict, Conflict is a major part of any story. The plot is centered around any sort of conflict in a short story or novel. It creates challenges with the story and within the characters. It keeps a reader entertained enough to see if the characters overcome those hardships. James Baldwin’s story, “Sonny’s Blues”, uses conflict as the main concept of the story, the conflicts and struggles wither make or break the characters in the story.
Conflicts play a crucial role in novels. Without conflict, novels would be uninteresting and very dull. Conflicts are seen in many different forms, as internal conflicts, when a character must deal with private problems, and external conflicts, when a character must deal with problems originating from an external source, like another person or society in general. Some common conflicts seen in other novels are person versus society, as in The Scarlet Letter when Hester is forced to face her mistake of adultery due to the obsession of the unforgiving town. An example of an internal conflict is present within Animal Dreams, when Cody must decide where she belongs and
Conflict is a normal part of everyday life and is an issue that every one faces. It is defined as a state of struggle or fight caused by the actual or perceived opposition or threat of needs, values, interest, status and power. Conflict is also a very important, common and necessary element in stories. It allows the author to add excitement and suspense thus making the story entertaining for readers. In stories, conflict is classified as any difficulty or problem that involves the characters and usually takes place in the formats of a character opposing them self, a character opposing another and a character opposing an object. The “Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman perfectly depicts conflicts and exemplifies the various types
The question, why do people become criminals raise a lot of views when it comes down to personal, social and environmental factors. While many think that people become criminals due to the environment and people they have grown up around, other’s think it is due to mental illness or just out of pure enjoyment. The following report will discuss how a person’s environment can impact them to become vicious killers, particularly discussing the Ivan Milat, a serial killer based in Australia, known for the case of the “Backpacker murders”.
Conflict is not something that can be avoided, especially in fiction. In fact, conflict is the main purpose of how a story came to be – without conflict, there will be no story. As quoted from Peder Hill (n.d.), “Its the primary ingredient that weaves together all the other elements of a novel”. However, conflict can arise in a story in various forms and they alter the course of the story. For instance, a conflict of decision. What decision is made by the characters moves the story. This is called external conflict, which Rector (2002) defines as “a struggle between a character and an outside force”. On the other hand, conflict within a character may also arise, which is called internal conflict. Internal conflict means “a struggle that
The film genre of the Western has long since proven to be more about the conflict and showdowns that occur in the storyline. Usually the western genre incorporates traditional western motifs and icons and adheres to those common plot structures of the genre, but Brokeback Mountain is different from what is to be normally expected because it does not seem like a traditional and conventional Western film at all. Brokeback Mountain has several different twists to it, like the more modern take on it – traditionally, characters in Western films were riding horses, but because Brokeback Mountain is a more modern movie, the two characters Jack and Ennis are seen traveling in cars and trucks most of the time. This alteration is very
Going through high school everyone is constantly trying to find out how to become liked by many. Today's teens are turning to false fronts to achieve this. The thought of being authentic is completely foreign to many. In my personal life going through high school I have experience with all types of people from those who are just trying to do what they believe to be genuine, along with those who only do what will please others. Finding ourselves is difficult, it's hard to be ourselves when we don't know ourselves. Some may say I have a bias, but since I've experienced the varying levels of authenticity, my argument is impartial. Finding an exact definition for authenticity is difficult, but the most fitting for today is to be genuine to oneself as well as others.
