Is technology the downfall of today’s teenagers? I think not, and that’s why I disagree with Mark Bauerlein’s article Cultural Illiteracy. When you’re building a house, and a screw goes in sideways you don’t blame the hammer you blame the person using that hammer. So why should it be different when it comes to technology? You may wonder why you should care about the issue, well as a part of Shawnee States’ staff or student base you will be interacting with or may be one of the people that he is referring to. Having a knowledge base on the subject and being able to form your own opinion is important when deciding how we can move forward on this issue. Instead of blaming teenagers themselves he insists that the fault falls to the parents and …show more content…
He goes into detail about how the internet and social media have a negative effect on today’s teenagers. Mark also says the cause of their lack to know material such as literature, history, fine art, and civics, is because of the excessive amount of technology use. That the bedroom is no longer a sanctuary but just a hang-out place. Bauerlein also goes into detail about attitude and maturity and how today’s teenagers will lack these skills in the future. Blaming all of this on parents and teachers, saying they are responsible to contain it. That they are responsible to teach citizenship, responsibility, and dependability though in his opinion most teenagers from this generation will lack most of these skills because of …show more content…
According to a study from Pew’s Survey, “The availability of smartphones has led to 92% of teens being online daily. Of those 92% of teens, 24% are online “almost constantly,” 56% report being online several times each day and 12% use the Internet once a day” (Lenhart). I will admit there is a lot of teenagers today that misuse technology mostly to fit in with other people within their age groups. Misuse of technology involves a broad spectrum of activities, some of them being: overuse, cyberbullying, revealing photos, and these are just a few examples. Unfortunately, causing groups to separate leaving children to feel alone. There are those teenagers, however, that do use technology for what it was intended it to be used for such as education, research, and entertainment. The problem with Bauerlein's assumptions is he is blaming technology for the misuse of itself. Instead of blaming the parents or the teenager, he reverts to blaming only the technology for all the attitude
1. Questions 1) Does the amount of technology a teenager uses daily affect school and grades they receive? 2) How do different cultures see the world differently because of the different amount of access to technology that they have? 3) Compare the level of technology that different cultures have depending on other contributing factors (environment, financial stability)? 4) Why are teenagers of different ages & different generations affected by technology differently? 5) Draw conclusions as to how the future will be changed based on technological advances. 2. A Brief Summary This article is talking about how contrary to popular belief, the technology that's teenagers use is actually beneficial. The studies done have
Along with decline in maturity, Twenge also brings up the issue of declining mental health in teenagers. She makes the assertion that cellphones are causing an increase in depression and anxiety among the latest generation of teens. Twenge briefly addresses that there is not proof of cellphones are directly causing these problems by stating “Of course, these analyses don’t unequivocally prove that screen time causes unhappiness; it’s possible that unhappy teens spend more time online.” Although she does proceed with the next sentence of the article by saying the research strongly suggests that too much screen time is indeed the cause of these problems. However, there are many other possible causes of these issues, including an increase in stress at school, family issues, drug use, and more. It is also possible that a combination of multiple triggers are simultaneously causing an increase in these troubles other than
We hold these truths to be obvious, that we are all created equally and all have our own rights. To which we should be able to rule our own lives. To be successful in doing so, the Adults must allow the Teenagers to expand their mind and grow on their own. After the adults are to strict on a Teenager, they lose confidence.
Technology isn’t hurting us as it is perceived to be. It seems like there is a lot of controversy between having limitations or not having them for technology. I believe teenagers should have some limitations decided by the family but not have everything taken away from them, because technology is unique and helpful. Technology increases the connection between people, it allows you to express yourself in many way and finally it doesn’t limit your intelligence. Although being connected all the time would possibly make you more isolated or make you feel more isolated it’s fantastic to know you have a chance to not be alone, to be connected even when you’re far away.
Much of President Bush’s speech revolved around the youth of America. After all he is well remembered for his No Child Left Behind program implemented nationwide. His first mention of children comes with this positive
So when the influences of technology are within the minds of our youth, it is nothing but expected for them to be influenced by it. For example, when a new trend takes place on the Internet students begin to follow it like the Tide Pod challenge that took place at the beginning of the year. When this challenge started students everywhere began participating in a dangerous event thought youth was just something for fun. However, other students are using technology and media for the benefit of things. The students from Parkland, Florida used technology to speak out against and bring awareness for gun violence. Although there is much controversy from this event, it still shows that technology can be used for
Irresponsible, reckless and dangerous are only some of the general traits used to describe teenagers. The negative connotation given to an entire group of individuals is appalling and has caused them to suffer many unfortunate consequences. The stereotypes used to categorize adolescents of today are lead by the portrayal of youth in the media and misrepresentation in our legal system. My essay will prove that the stereotypes reinforced by these sources are untrue and in fact, negatively impact teens as they struggle to defeat these social generalizations. Teenage years are said to be the most important and defining years of your life.
He introduces this through diction by saying “young people” instead of using adolescents that have a bad connotation to it (page 6). When people usually use the word adolescents they are using it in a negative way. By him saying young people it makes us feel like we have a positive impact on this world and that we can make a difference. When he said young people it made me feel like that I was able to do bigger things in this world. He didn’t just want to touch adults, but also teenagers because they are the ones that are left to clean up past generations mess. He also addresses this by his optimistic tone by moving many young people because he sounds very positive and that we can do it. Obama sees the glass half full not half empty, which allows others to see the world with more good than bad. Not only is he talking to adults now, but also teenagers. He makes younger generation’s feel like they have power and a word in what is going on in their country. It is effective because now it widens his range of voters that he talking to and who he is reaching out
In the speech he explained that teenagers fall into two groups. Seventy five percent are the ones that are not trying hard enough- they are followers and procrastinators, they drink, smoke, and party. In comparison, there is the other group, the 25 percent. The other percent is the teenagers that behave themselves, follow the rules, study, work hard, and get very good grades. The 25 percent are smart and driven and know what they want from life.
Besides the cell phone, does technology really affect us in our society? Today’s generation of teenagers are using smartphones much of the time. Researchers also found that many teenagers are using more smartphones. This constant use of technology has had negative effects on today’s youth. Constant use of technology by teenagers is harmful because it causes depression and affects education
To prove his point he cites an example with regard to the upbringing of a child at home by the parents and the educational assistance that a child gets from the school. In order to mould a child into a good and responsible citizen the schools teach discipline, respect
The author of the book The Dumbest Generation is concerned over young Americans and what the digital age is doing to them. Throughout the book he cites many percentages of young Americans who are dropping out of high school and college and he blames the digital era for it. The author loves the idea of traditional values and routine and he believes that due to the amount of technology that is rising, it is killing off those core values that students need in order to grow and stay productive. He also claims that younger adults abuse their time, and their priorities compared to the older generation have changed significantly. The reasons that he gives because of these changes are due to the digital media and the advances of technology that have gone up quickly within a few years. This results in adolescent teenagers who are abusing their time over the web. Instead of trying to study and learn they are on Facebook and other social networks.
Technology has been involved in people’s lives forever, especially in the Millennial Generation. This generation consists of individuals born between the years of 1982-2004. The articles “The Flight From Conversation,” “Teens and Technology 2013,” and “Leading The Charge For Change” deals with teens interacting with technology today. Each article has different topics, but they connect through the over dependence of teens to technology. The Millennial Generation becomes less and less in touch with the real world and morphs into a quasi-reality.
There is no doubt that technology has advanced tremendously in the last half-century. Technology has provided extraordinary improvements to our world; being an endless source of entertainment and nonstop communication anywhere at any time. But are these technological advancements a good thing? The youth of today are constantly immersed in these technological advancements whether through cell phones, gaming systems, or laptops. As technology continues to advance it is negatively affecting our health, communication skills, and the education of youth.
From having good grades, to studying for the ACT, in addition to trying to fit into the social aspect in high school a teens life has never been more hard. And the invention of the smartphone has only added to the amount of stress that a teen has to deal with. The smartphone has created an environment in which adolescents are always connected with those they go to highschool with, through the use of social media. For example if a bully were to be picking on a student at school the student could not just go home and forget about the incident, but now the bully has the ability to abuse that student at any point he/she desires. These types of incidents are creating a new wave of problems for adolescents and their parents, Nojiri Matthew interviewed Rick Wolf (assistant superintendent at Mifflin School district) explaining “The increase in social media use has added another element when identifying and caring for kids dealing with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and other mental health disorders, Wolf said” (Wolf). The smartphone is the catalyst to these problems. If you were to take away the smartphone problems such as cyberbullying would be less of an issue. However adolescents these days are given smartphones at such a young age, with no supervision on how long they use it throughout the day, that it becomes second nature to be looking at it every minute of everyday checking their social media profiles.
