Cultural Identity In Two Kinds By Amy Tan

Is there a family get-together that everyone attends? Do you and your family have certain rules about eating together? Are you allowed to be on your phone? Or do you all hang out on a sunday together? Culture is what brings so many families close together. According to one source, cultural identity can be defined as “People from multiple ethnic backgrounds may identify as belonging to the same culture” (Trumbull and Pacheco 9). Many aspects of a person's life that may determine his or her cultural identity by music, activities, location, and interest of socializing with one another. To most teens it is like a drug, we just get so attached to it. Music is part of our lives and without it we would most likely be lost. It calms us down, gets you pumped for games, makes us cry and most of all it influences us. In “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, she writes “not the best because you not trying” (24). This quote shows not everyone has the same vibe with music. Yes it is great to listen to but playing it is different. If you would want to play music you have to want it. You will have to have a drive to make you want to actually play. Learning how to play music does not come easily and for Jeing-mei it was an infirmity. “I can’t play the piano. And even if I could, I wouldn't go on TV if you paid me a million dollars” (Tan 24). Jeing-mei never had a passion to play music. If one does not simply like something do not force them to do it, that will make them miserable. “You pick up fast my mother said as if she was certain. You have a natural talent. You could be a genius if you wanted to” (Tan 28). Even though Jeing-mei mom wanted more they still stayed close after all that happened because music music keeps one another together.
