Different cultures all around the world have different culture values which shapes their cultural identity. For example, Islam’s second pillar states that muslims need to pray 5 times a day in a very specific way. Also, it is common for Muslims to carry around a prayer rug with them everywhere they go (Frey 97). This shows that the culture of Islam has a cultural identity of being disciplined towards their beliefs and being very close to God. Other cultures like the Japanese show devotion to their religion by doing other things. For example, in Ancient Japan to show devotion in the culture of Amida Buddhism followers repeated Amida Buddha over 70,00 times a day (Frey 247). The vikings reigned from 750 C.E to 1050 C.E (Norse Mythology 1). This barbaric clan of people did still have religion though. They believed in gods who were portrayed as warriors in Norse Mythology. In the article, “Vikings” the author wrote, “The Vikings also were fierce warriors. The gods they worshipped were warriors, too” (Vikings 1). This quote shows that vikings believe in a culture that keys on violence and believes that their supernatural creators of the world and controllers of the universe are brutal and fierce warriors. These beliefs in gods affected the culture of the vikings by making them fierce warriors also. They traveled the seas conquering the coasts of Europe and attacking other civilizations. Vikings beliefs were called Norse mythology. In Norse mythology there were two different categories of gods. There is the aesir and the vanir. But, the most powerful god among all the gods is Odin, the god of poetry, battle and wisdom (Norse Mythology 1). These excavators found this hammer in a grave. It had many interesting designs as described by April Holloway, “another similar pendant has been found in Købelev, on the Danish island of Lolland, which is the first one to be discovered with an inscription. The runic text reads “Hmar x is”, which translates to “this is a hammer”. Cast in bronze, and likely plated with silver, tin and gold, the 1,100-year-old pendant shows that Thor’s myth deeply influenced Viking jewellery” (Holloway 1). This quote shows that this hammer was found around 900 and it is definitely representing the God of Thor. SInce the hammer contains the phrase, “Hmar x is” which means “this is a hammer” the examiner knows that this artifact was representing Thor’s magical hammer. This quote also proves Thor and other gods in Norse mythology were very important to the vikings. Since they used very rare and expensive materials like gold, silver and bronze it proves the importance of Thor. Other amulets and jewelry with these designs were also found in graves and many other places. This represents that viking valued Norse mythology so much that there jewelry reflected these gods and people with high ranks were born with materials that represent gods. This artifact of thor’s hammer greatly shaped the identity of the viking

Over the past 100 years, the United States has changed the way it views other cultures including more respect, equality, and freedom for all people. As much as America has grown, has America really changed that drastically? Across the nation and world, cultural differences still exist, misunderstandings continue, and fighting persists. Recent attacks within the United States that are similar to the conflicts between the Japanese and Americans in the early 1900’s include the 9/11 attack, the bombing at the Boston Marathon, and the mass shooting in Orlando.
These Vikings’ were the most feared and brutal, being that their self-control was lost frequently in battle. Fighting and raiding to the Vikings could be seen as a hobby. Scandinavians went on raiding adventures and were heartless to who they killed. Women and children were killed as brutally as men were. Europeans were so terrified of the Vikings coming, some French churches created a special prayer for protection: “God, deliver us from the fury of the Northmen.”
In the year 793 AD began the greatest reign of terror ever spawned in Europe. The Vikings ruled Northern Europe until 1066 AD and managed to pillage forth into Asia, Southern Europe, and further westward where they’d eventually find the Americas. Vikings were the most brutal of people; however, they were also very loving to their families, especially their wives. They were also brave and creative. They had a culture much more interesting than our own today. The Vikings were better than people are today because they are known for being strong and wise, but the greatest thing the Vikings are known for is the fear they placed among even the great nations of England, France and the Holy Roman Empire.
This time period is commonly known as the Viking Age of Scandinavian history. A Viking's most treasured weapon was his sword. They were handed down generations because of inheritance, they were often named and could be inscribed with writings by talented blacksmiths to magically increase their powers. The Vikings had no professional standing army and tactics and discipline seemed to have little to no development. They did not fight in regular formations. Aspiring warriors wanted armed service so they fought next to famous fighters in order to be rewarded with weapons and fame of their own. The houses the Vikings lived in were made out of wattle which is sticks. Many people believe the Scandinavian people were big and muscular, but that was not the case. Due to the short summer seasons, growing crops was difficult and resources were always scarce. As a result, many of the Scandinavian people were much smaller than commonly depicted due to limited food sources. The Vikings were a special culture compared to many others before and after
The vikings started out with their own religion with worshiping their god Odin along with others. They have tales of the heroic acts the gods did. How they help them in their raiding season, to help get the profit and wealth they need, to survive a battle and do damage to enemies, to have a successful crops season, and have help cure
Wooden shields could endure battles, while also not wearing out the warrior from its weight. Most of the shields only lasted one battle and were painted with various colors depending on what village the Vikings were fighting for. The Vikings wore helmets without horns on them, although that is how they have been depicted in today’s history. Typically the Vikings helmets were made out of iron with a nose guard descending down from the top of the helmet for facial protection. The higher ranked Vikings were commonly the warriors that wore the helmets. Vikings were buried with their armor and weapons, and there have not been that many helmets found with their remains. Although there has been some helmets found, it was not that common for the warriors to wear them on account of how it could become a nuisance while in battle. In Norse Warfare, Martina Sprague states, “when deciding to wear armor, the Viking warrior had to consider his maneuverability on the battlefield and the weight of the protective gear”(159). It was not that common for chain mail to be worn by the Viking warriors. This type of armor was a sign of social status, but many warriors chose not to wear it because it was uncomfortable and heavy. The Vikings also wore leather layers of clothing serving as their main form of body armor. Wearing leather under chain mail was optional but not necessary. Although armor was important it was not the Vikings main concern when it came to the
The Viking ship represented everything about the Vikings’ culture and they revered them with their artisanship, navigational skills, cunning fighting skills, and the ultimate honor of using a ship as a burial vessel for their elite. Vikings believed that when they died in a fight, “a warrior maiden called a Valkyrie escorted him to the Viking heaven” and once the man arrived, a new life began of fighting all-day and feasting all night (Winroth 231). This belief illustrates that the Vikings held fighting and feasting as extremely
Contrary to the widely Christian beliefs of the rest of medieval Europe, the Vikings held pagan religious belief, meaning that they were polytheistic and believed in many gods. These beliefs were flexible and corresponded to each individual Viking.
Vikings, people who were mainly from, Norway, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Iceland. It is impossible to assign the various Viking groups at all precisely to places of origin. Having fully elaborated culture is the greatest difference between humans and other primates. Culture is a set of learned behaviors, customs, and characteristics of a particular social group transmitted through social learning. Norms are standards, expectations of behavior within a specific cultural group. Often unspoken and implicit, these norms offer social guidelines of appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Marriage has become less important in the United States in the modern period than several decades ago.

As a group of peoples that had a lasting impact on the world, the ancient Viking has become a subject of much fascination in the current era. Presently, Vikings are prospering in the field of entertainment. From the popular History Channel series, to the portrayal of several Norse Gods in recent films. Bits of Viking culture have become rather prominent in todays pop-culture. They are often seen as stoic and intimidating warriors, sometimes-bloodthirsty invaders whom reject the civilized way of Christ. They have been shown as barbaric even, often worshiping old strange gods and participating in twisted rituals of the damned, as seen in films such as the 13th Warrior. With such a variety in the portrayal of a single culture, it can sometimes be speculated that not everything you witness is of one hundred percent authenticity. As with other interpretations of ancient cultures, a lot can be speculated and imaging as well. What is interesting to note is the evidence left behind by the Vikings. They were a civilization that reached lands others would not see again for centuries, and many of their old settlements can be found today. Their artifacts, and the events told by others of the time paint the Vikings as a rather mobile people. They are well known today for their seamanship, and their prowess at the task. What survives of the people’s myths and legends are more than all oral tales, later transcribed by others. One of the more prominent surviving
