The progress I have made on building cultural competence is I met this guy while I was at work, and he was telling about how his insurance won’t be able to cover for his visit to campus health. I suggested to him that maybe he change health care providers to someone who can possibly help cover more things than the one he has now. Also in one of my public health classes one of my teachers is having a luncheon with people who have HIV and I know if I go to the event I can get a better insight on what they are dealing with and find out ways to help them, since the luncheon is ran by an organization that helps people who live with HIV, or I could just give them support

Goal 1) I want to learn more about my how Africans lived, because it is the way my ancestors lived their lives and finding this all out will give me the knowledge I will need to know going forward in life. Goal 2) I want to know about the slavery, and all the things the Africans had to go through on a daily basis. Goal 3) I want to know about the African’s accomplishments even though they weren’t given that many rights. Looking at my goals, I am proud to say I met them, during this 7-week course I learned a lot about the past, many things I did not know about since it was never taught to me. I can say with this class I called home to my mom and discussed something new I learned about and she was very excited I decided to take this class, as well. I don’t plan to just stop here, I will expand my knowledge and continue to learn about the history and even the present things that are happening to Africans, for example to slave trade that is going on in Libya. One course-related accomplishment that I am proud of, is getting to know about the history of slavery, and seeing what my ancestors went through. Cultural Competency Having cultural competency within an agency is invaluable because it informs how that agency provides its services to clients. Cultural competence is commonly defined as “a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals and enable the system, agency, or professionals to work effectively in cross-cultural situations.” In practice, this means availing consumers of services that are both accessible and culturally responsive. For some clients, providing culturally targeted services provides consumers with a safe space and a means of healing. Equally important, clients can examine how their cultural identity may be impacting their physical and mental health.
This article elaborately explains the process of becoming culturally competent. It states the stages of development as Denial, Defense, Minimization, Acceptance, Adaptation, and Integration, respectfully. The article goes in depth on each stage of development, the first three being stages in what is termed “ethnocentrism” and the last three being stages of “ethnorelativism”. While the different stages are being discussed, the author presents examples of each and emphasizes the fact that American’s are not the only people who go through these stages when becoming more culturally competent.

The understanding of Cultural Competency is the beginning of many topics of discussion within today’s society. A broad definition of cultural competency would be one that described in its entirety a specific set of behaviors. These behaviors come in many forms, such as behavior, actions, beliefs, and our religions. Cultural competency would be acknowledging those behaviors even when they are not the same as one another (2014, July 10).
Both articles were very informative and provided information about how agencies need to change in order to become culturally competent. The agency I intern with this year is the Toms River Regional School District, specifically High School East, in that respect, my agency is very different than those in the two articles reviewed. Some of the core issues are the same when it comes to needed to learn cultural competency in terms of race and sexual orientation specifically. I have seen a similar issue in my agency needing to address cultural competency. Toms River School District is not very culturally diverse, in the sense that the staff and students lack ethnic diversity, but there are students and staff who are part of the LGBT community. Slowly,

I was able to demonstrate cultural competence when I volunteered at the hospital reading books to patients. I had a chance to interact with diverse groups and learn about different cultures. Some patients used to teach me their language and this is how I became more culturally sensitive. So to solve this, first I had to become aware of my own culture by asking my parents some questions and reading books that pertain to my culture. In fact, working on Cultural Competencies goal has been an opportunity to know how to behave appropriately in other different communities. I learned the importance of using verbal and nonverbal cues and how they vary from one place to another. For example, I entered Africa Healthcare Network when we were based at Kimihurura. Currently, I move to Gisenyi and most of the people I met daily are Congolese. With Cultural Competencies skills, I learned what I should be careful of and what I should feel free to do with them.

This class made me to recognize that culture is an important part of life. Attitude towards cultural differences make another factor. Because those who ignore to understand other cultures and find faults in other's culture can't communicate or interact effectively. Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews make a good human and he distinct from other animals. Cross-cultural skills also an important factor.
