Introduction

Cultural competence is a highly important part of the role of radiographers, particularly in multicultural Australia. It encompasses the ability of health care professionals to interact effectively with patients with diverse cultures. It involves awareness of your personal cultural worldview, possessing a positive attitude towards diversity, understanding different cultural practices and beliefs and the ability to communicate effectively across cultures (NSW Department of Health, 2010). Lack of cultural competence can lead to the patient feeling that their concerns are misunderstood and ignored because of their ethnicity or language and consequently, develop a sense of mistrust to the radiographer and dissatisfaction to the service provided. X spoke fluent Arabic, although found it difficult to communicate in English. It is important to acknowledge the patient’s limited English proficiency and to devise strategies to accurately convey important information such as identification, pregnancy check and positioning instructions. Furthermore, we need to understand the impact of culture on communication; for example, some Muslim women may avoid direct eye contact with a male health professional out of respect and modesty (Rasool, 2014). Without cultural sensitivity, barriers to communication may exist when the patient cannot fully understand the radiographer and express their concerns, often causing unnecessary mistakes, excessive pain and poor patient care (Almutairi, 2015). Imagine, the patient misunderstands when asked about the possibility of being pregnant and fails to inform the radiographer of her pregnancy. This can lead to the exposure of the developing child to ionising radiation, which can be potentially damaging. Thus, effective communication between patient and radiographer is a key factor in the delivery of safe and high quality patient
