CSC1023 Literature Review Introduction This review will be about papers published in the field of rehabilitative gaming, particularly focusing on those published by Gary Ushaw. By implementing rehabilitation exercises into an interactive game, the patient no longer sees them as a chore and instead will engage for longer and complete them in a quicker time, which speeds up the healing process (Ushaw, Ziogas, Eyre, & Morgan, 2013). I personally believe there is serious potential in the future of rehabilitative gaming, which will be beneficial to both the patient in question because they take less time to complete the rehabilitation process, and doctors and the NHS because patients can use home equipment instead of coming onto a hospital etc.
CFT Composition: Iaja’s (youth) CFT meeting was held at the family’s home in Jersey City, NJ. In attendance was Jasmine Alexander (CM), Ashley Warren (caregiver) and Iaja Carter (youth). Aminata Bangura (ISS provider) participated via phone. Iaja and the family have numerous natural supports to assist with treatment.
One of the most common models utilized at Glens Falls Outpatient Rehab was the PEO model. During the initial evaluation, we would ask their basic medical history and then further questions lead into the changes in their functional abilities to engage in everyday occupations. We would inquire about their living environment and if they have found anything throughout their day that is easier or difficult. This area was explored when going over home exercise plans and adaptive ways to engage in their desired occupation while healing. Many patients reported doing their tendon glides while waiting at a red light during their driving occupation. In addition, the facility used a form called the LIFEware System that is used as an outcome-tracking
The last CEC standard reviews the importance of effective and production collaboration between families, service providers, educators, community agencies, and most importantly individuals with exceptionalities. Although I have collaborated with other educational professionals for seventeen years, I did not understand the components and strategies for effective collaboration until completing the graduate program. After completing the course, I have changed some of the ways and manners in which I collaborate with other education professionals and families of individuals with special needs. Since changing the ways in which I collaborate, I can tell a positive change in my professional and personal relationships with others.
Standardised WMT was implemented as a 14-day program targeting the movement quality of more-affected arm and independency in everyday activities. It consists of 1-hour formal training by an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) for 10 consecutive weekdays and increasing home practice starting on day 2 (See figure 1). WMT uses the Wii-Sports games (Nintendo, Japan) of golf, baseball, bowling, tennis and boxing as a rehabilitation tool in a structured protocol that can be individually tailored according to the level of motor-function and progress of each patient [2]. Game performance was recorded during formal sessions for motivation but the scores were not the focus of
They can be played by anybody including children, and adults, for relaxing and enjoyment not only in free time but also during work time. The author adds a section in this chapter, that explains how the video game industry is on the rise and cites studies that show how games enhances work performance. One study that the author reports is that "physicians who spent at least three hours a week playing games made about 37 percent fewer mistakes in laparoscopic surgery and performed the task 27 percent faster than their counterparts who did not play" (Pink, page
One of the most significant factors in the patient's recovery is family involvement and support. Family acceptance and support can help a patient deal with issues the patient may have during the rehab process. Positive attitudes and reinforcement from loved ones often help the patient work towards recovery. Family contribution, flexibility, and open communication can overcome various barriers. Families who inspire hope can help the patient to adjust and become more confident in his or her own abilities. Finally, family and friends can also offer practical support, such as rides to the doctor or pharmacy, going to the grocery store, and offering to babysit during health care visits. The encouragement of family and friends can motivate people who have been having difficulties in their rehabilitation to take steps to be more active and get back to work more quickly than those who do not have a strong support
Frustration is a factor when sticking to treatment and rehabilitation. The individual may find it very aggravating when they have to go to the physio and their teammates are going to training. The individual may find it hard to stick to their treatment for the amount of time that they are told to recover for. They may want to go and play the sport a week earlier before they were told to
The “Role of Rest” study conducted by Oliver Entine and Dylan Small in 2007 provides insight into how playing games at home may provide an advantage. Oliver and Dylan drawn data from
The events that brought people with disabilities from the shadows of social acceptance and inclusion, like sports participation, and the civilising process started to gain credence in academic circles. Many fields of study evolved to look at the subject. One such area is therapeutic recreation (TR) which is part of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). In its infancy TR was known as hospital recreation, medical recreation and recreation therapy. It finally settled on therapeutic recreation in 1967 when the National Therapeutic Recreation Society was founded (Sherrill, 1998). The essay will focus on how TR specialists' assist is the rehabilitation of individuals who suffer from cardiac disease.
A condition that would benefit from this activity could be an individual with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). An individual with RA would benefit as the game is very gentle on the body, with limited risk of injury or strain to the joints. A traumatic brain injury or TBI may also benefit from playing this game for a few reasons. One reason is that the game could be used as a stress relieve for the individual with a TBI. They can play the game with friends and family which would encourage a very supportive environment that can improve their mood and spirituality. Secondly, they activity can encourage the brain usage.
Here, there is a clear sense in which the process of rehabilitation involves assisting the individual to get ‘back to normal’. He or she may need to re-learn motor skills, such as how to walk (in the case of a broken limb); or seek to recover cognitive skills, such as memory (in the case of a head injury). In either scenario, rehabilitation implies returning to a former, favorable state.” (Robinson, 2009).
A citizen's free time is extremely valuable and some more than others tend to take recreational time seriously. These studies found that these alternative methods did help to improve strength and function of these patients, but none of the studies had significant data to definitively prove this. While the data from these studies are not significant, it does not mean that they are entirely unimportant. Most of the researchers from these studies sent out follow up questionnaires about the enjoyment of the rehabilitation styles. All of the studies that did these questionnaires found that the participants had much greater levels of enjoyment and motivation while completing their from of rehab. This shows that while these alternative methods of hemiplegia rehabilitation might not be entirely effective on their own, they can serve a purpose when combined with traditional physical therapy methods. Physical therapist can utilize video games like the Wii or virtual reality software for patients that do not respond to or do not have proper motivation for traditional rehabilitation methods. This can help the physical therapist tremendously so they will have a tool at their disposal to help increase the motivation of the harder to work with patients. While the studies were performed well, they did have a number of limitations that hindered the research. Many of the studies, all besides one, had less than 50 participants, which leaves very little room for participant or conductor error. These small sample sizes also allow for outliers to throw off the data tremendously, as compared to if the study had a larger sample size. Another limitation that most of these studies had was that there were often a greater number of males to females. While this may not seem detrimental to these studies, it does provide doubt about the accuracy because of the differences between males and females, which may have skewed the data in a
This paper was important for me to research and write because I have several disabling mental health conditions. I see many of the games mentioned later as therapeutic and I find that my mental health becomes more stable after playing tabletop games in a social setting. This is odd as my mental health prevents me from being social in many instants. The importance of mental health and ways to treat them are becoming a concern, and I wanted to find out if my experiences in gaming where studied and if others shared my views. My goal in this paper is to spark an interest in the psychiatric world to do more research on these types of games as a means of therapy or rehabilitation and show how tabletop games of many kinds, affect our mental state and produce a unique environment for mental health experiences.
In the future, you might need to put your bodies on the line in order to win a game with friends. You could even be able to provide physical feelings and emotions to other people through gaming. The possibilities are endless, although the trend needs some careful consideration in terms of accessibility – will everyone be able to take part in a highly physical gameplay?
