The Cruel “Sport” of Dog Fighting For animal lovers, it is difficult to understand why someone would cause a dog to engage in vicious fights, inflicting and receiving injuries or often death. Dogfighting is a serious and continuing problem all over the United States. A dogfight takes place in a ring made of plywood and is usually held in a hidden location such as a vacant garage or the basement of a house or business. Fights can last for hours, and the dogs are made to keep going even after having painful injuries such as torn flesh and broken bones. The fight goes on until one of the dogs is unable to continue. Dogs may die immediately of their injuries, sheer exhaustion or later from infections. Dog fighting should be stopped everywhere. …show more content…
Dogfighting is also part of a criminal subculture that can involve gang activity, illegal gambling, drug use, and drug dealing. Illegal gambling is an inherent part of a dogfight, and because of the large amount of money that changes hands, weapons are common on the scene. Children are often present, and besides the inherent danger of the situation to a child, their witnessing such cruelty has been shown to lead to violence. Most dogs used for fighting are pit bulls, normally known for their courage and energy. Pit Bulls have unfortunately been exploited by breeders running illegal kennels and by trainers who encourage aggression in their animals by various means: exercise to the point of exhaustion, starvation, beating, and harsh punishment. They beat these animals, feed them hot peppers, feed them gunpowder, and lock them in small closets. They do everything they can to make these animals vicious and mean, so the dogs become powerfully strong and aggressive. Many dogs are found dumped with untreated severe injuries or are tortured or hanged after losing fights. During the dog fighting the dogs themselves are not the only animal victims. Smaller animals such as kittens, puppies, and rabbits are killed and used as bait in training
The main reason pit bulls attack is because they are mentally unstable, a mixed breed and show overbearing traits, or because they are mistreated by their owners. The public must understand that the three “pit bull breeds were bred for dog fighting and bear and bull-baiting” (PBRC). On the other hand, they were also kept as “nanny dogs” and used for herding cattle. “Pit bulls are ideal for therapy work because of their pleasant nature” (PBRC). These are three of the most stable breeds known to man. They have a very high temperament test score, 86% as of 2010, a lot higher than most breeds. “The American Pit Bull Terrier is one of the top 5 most stable breeds in the country” (PBRC). Anyone can see that this is an excellent breed of dog. There are a few things that people should know though. “Pit bulls have a lower Tolerance to dogs, but with any breed, a dog’s tolerance changes as they mature” (PBRC). “Maturity can come late with pit bull breeds” (Villalobos Rescue Center). The reason for this low tolerance is because of their history of dog fighting. It has been bred into them to have the will to fight. Pit bulls usually do not start a fight most of the time, but they will not back down or give up. Due to this, owners must be cautious and attentive.
This fight leaves the dogs dripping with blood, in pain, weak, and tired. And that is part of the reason why I agree for it being banned. Yet it also shows that the dogs are sting and fight their own battles. The activities that occurred are common nature for dogs. Such instincts date back to their
Dog fighters say to have the best fighting dog in the arena is to get them while they are young. The reason why dog fighters want the dogs as puppies because, it’s to train them so they can learn when they are small but when they are big for example: if you get a pit bull at an old age they would not be able to use that dog because of the fact that they are already old, weak, and there body just can’t move that fast anymore so they would either bait the pit bull or kill it in some kind of way. According to Heger “during the 1800's dogfights were advertised in national magazines” (Heger, 2). As we see today pit bulls really are the main type of dogs that dog fighters would choose and also bloodlines that could either mix with the breed of pit bulls or other blood lines who are stronger and fiercer. However another thing that Heger points out is that the “dogs are frequently injected with steroids of other illegal drugs, beaten, or starved in an effort to increase aggression” (Heger, 4). This
People in the public are lead to believe that Pit Bulls are bred only as fighting dogs and that they are aggressive to other dogs and humans. It is unfortunately true that some Pit Bulls are bred for fighting but, not all are. There is a small percentage overall of Pit Bulls that are used as fighting dogs, mostly Pit Bulls are family dogs. “Some pit bulls were selected and bred for their fighting ability. That means that they may be more likely than other breeds to fight with dogs. It doesn’t mean that they can’t be around other dogs or that they’re unpredictably aggressive. Other pit bulls were specifically bred for work and companionship. These dogs have long been popular family pets, noted for their gentleness, affection and loyalty.” (Position). This states that not all Pit Bulls are threatening and have a desire to fight. I believe that dog fighting is wrong and should be illegal throughout the United States. Dog fighting is a very popular underground form of entertainment.
Aggressive and/or vicious dogs are beginning to be a serious problem in the United States. With the rise in dog fights Pit Bull Terriers are viewed in a negative light. When the wrong owner gets a Pit Bull and withholds food and teaches the dog to fight it makes a very dangerous dog. Pit bulls are known for their bite strength and fearless personalities. Due to all the negative media, abusive and neglectful pit bull owners; the pit bull terriers are thought of as vicious and unsafe dogs to be around. Pit bull terriers are discriminated against due to a misconception of the breed itself.
“These dogs have long been popular family pets, noted for their gentleness, affection and loyalty.” ("The Truth about Pit Bulls."). Pit bulls aren’t fighting dogs anymore, if anything they are starved for attention. “It’s also important to note that some dog breeds are now bred for entirely different jobs than those for which they were originally developed” ("The Truth about Pit Bulls"). The only way a pit bull would be a fighting dog would be because of its owner. If an owner teaches their pit bull to fight then then of course the dog is going to be aggressive and do as it’s taught, but the dog will not fight without being raised that way. If pit bulls are given a chance they can live in peace with
The fighting alone is abuse, but the prepping for the fight itself is even more horrifying. Pit Bulls spend their lives in a small cage cooped up in filthy conditions. Trainers add weights to the Pit Bulls chain to strengthen the dogs upper body. The Pit Bulls are beaten and starved to increase their aggressiveness. Trainers force the Pit Bull to kill cats or rabbits as form of training to practice for the real deal. After fifteen months of training, the Pit Bull will participate in a "roll" where the Pit Bull fights another for ten minutes to test and seeif the dog is worth the trainers time anymore. If not, the dog is neglected or killed (Silverman 4). This a prime example that people are the problem, not the breed. Some may argue that the American Pit Bull Terrier was bred to fight and attack people; however, it is the trainers who abuse and neglect the breed to make the breed trust no one. Through proper training from a professional trainer, the Pit Bull attacks would go down.
Additionally, Pit bulls are/ were created to protect, bull baiting, or to cage fighting. Pit bulls are just used to being aggressive and/ or being provoked. It might not be the dog but the owner. A dog that is chained up, not fed, or doesn’t
Dogfighting is an inhumane blood sport that usually leaves the losing dog brutally killed by the owner, or suffering even more pain through beating, hanging, drowning or electrocution. Some people feel passionately against dog fighting and have utilized platforms such as letters, news articles, and speeches to speak out about it. Cheryl Durst, Ashley Southall, and Michael Vick utilize imagery to appeal to readers’ emotions as well as their established statuses to institute a sense of credibility with their audience.
As a matter of fact, hunting dogs and other sport dogs, including pit bulls, display animal aggression. No correlation between animal aggression and human aggression exists. Most dogs that live in at a shelter or safe house go through temperament testing. A mandatory series of temperament testing shows the dog’s level of aggression. Certified therapy or rescue dogs take required temperament testing, and this option exists for any pet dog. Of all tested pit bulls, they pass at a higher rate than the dog population in general (Hiding Truth). In Janis Bradley’s 2014 revised book, Dog Bites: Problems and Solutions, she states the issues behind the cases of pit bull attacks, “The most comprehensive study of dog bite-related fatalities to date covered all 256 incidents that occurred between 2000 and 2009. The study reliably identified seven factors potentially within the control of dog caretakers that co-occurred, in various combinations, in the overwhelming majority of the cases examined.14 It is based on investigative techniques not previously employed in dog bite-related fatality studies, which had relied primarily on media reports.15,16 This current study utilized sources more complete, verifiable and accurate than media reports. The researchers identified a co-occurrence of multiple, controllable factors: no able-bodied person being present to intervene (87.1 percent); the victim having no familiar relationship with the dog(s) (85.2 percent); failure to neuter/spay the dog(s) (84.4 percent); a victim’s compromised ability, whether based on age or physical condition, to manage interactions with the dog(s) (77.4 percent); the owner keeping dog(s) as resident animals rather than family pets (76.2 percent); prior mismanagement of the dog(s) (37.5 percent); and abuse or neglect of the dog(s) (21.1 percent)” (4). This leads to people mistakenly blaming this breed of dog for
For some, They getaway with just a few ghastly scratcches, but others arent so lucky. In a recent 11-year period, from 2005 to 2015, pit bulls killed 232 Americans, about one citizen every 17 days.14 By 2018, pit bulls are projected to have mauled to death 338 Americans since 1998, the year the CDC stopped tracking fatal dog attacks by breed, and over 415 people since 1980-google. Many victims of these attacks aren't fortunate enough to come back with their lives, and those who do can often have deformed body parts. “Victims of severe dog attacks often suffer acute damage, which may require $250,000 to one million dollars in specialized medical care treatment. Reconstructive surgery, such as skin grafts, tissue expansion and scar diminishment, often requires multiple procedures over a period of years”-
In my opinion, dog fighting is cruel. Although some pit bulls are injured, the winners are forced to fight again, until one gives up. One pit bull was known to be a successful fighter and the owner received $100,000 in a single year. I say it is cruel because the owners use sticks to separate the dog fights and pit bulls don’t deserve to be mistreated. Furthermore, there was a pit bull who resulted dead after 20 stab wounds.
People using pit bulls for dog fights is a problem today. People like to make money. Using a pitbulls in a dog fight and winning makes a lot of money. Since people like money and a win could get you at least ten thousand dollars, people like to participate in dog fights(Simpson).
The American Pit Bull Terrier, also know as the bit bull has become a well know breed in the dog world. The breed was originated in the 19th century for the sport of bull and bear baiting. these sport became illegal in 1835. Dog fighting then took its place and is still an illegal activity people promote their dog to participate in today. The breed is often misunderstood, the qualities these dogs have that make them obedient and loyal are the same qualities dog fighters are searching for in their dogs. The results is that the pit bull has gained a reputation for being dangerous. although the pit bull has a bad reputation, they make great companions and family pets. We must put an end to the dog fighting rings and save the breed from the bad
Incase we’ve forgotten, all dogs are descendants of the wolf. Somewhere along the line we assumed that because the dog has been domesticated that we no longer have anything to fear. This concept, however, isn’t true. All animals act instinctively, they don’t act accordingly to their training. As long as their owners are present they might behave properly but who is to say how they will act when their owner is no longer present. We have to remember that we all have that flight or fight mode and therefore when faced with fear or danger we might not act logically but instead instinctively. The reasons why a pit bull or any animal may attack are to protect, for territory, possession, out of fear, to defend, for social status, frustration, and when in pain (ASPCA, para. 7-13). The dogs’ wild relatives are territorial and they live in certain areas and defend their land from intruders. Anyone willing to enter will face a charging dog. Dogs are a social species and if left alone they would create small packs of family and other dogs. If one of them
