How would you feel if one day a doctor said you can not have your favorite food in the world or else it will be bad? As soon as my boyfriend of four years realized he had Crohn's Disease, that became his reality. What would be a normal date going out to his favorite restaurant and getting his favorite food turned to a stomach ache filled nightmare. It all started in the beginning of 2015 when he was having constant stomach pains that only cleared up if he didn’t eat. As his stomach aches grew worse and his health was declining he decided to go to the doctor to have numerous tests done which made it clear to the doctors that he did in fact had a minor case of Crohn’s Disease and would have to have major dietary restrictions. I could see part …show more content…
If Austin ingests any gluten or dairy his stomach starts feeling like it is on fire and that could last anywhere from an hour to two days; he has even had a stomach ache so bad he cannot move and then I have to help him do everything. Every once in awhile he will cave in and decided the pain is worth a little bit of gluten or dairy. His family at first was supportive and got gluten-free everything and dairy free foods but as the time went by, they got whatever they felt like eating gluten or not, not what they thought would be a good choice for Austin. Most nights his mom decides it is a good night for pizza or subs, which he is not supposed to have. I still to this day have to go and buy my boyfriend food that won’t upset his stomach just because his family is selfish and will not do it for him. Another downside to my boyfriend having Crohn’s Disease besides him not getting to enjoy his favorite food is that he is losing shocking amounts of weight. When I first met Austin four years ago he was around 200 pounds, when he was weighed at the doctors the day he found out he had Crohn’s he weighed 130 pounds. He lost 70 pounds in just a span of a few months which is never good. Losing that much weight made him super tired and
Desiree Ferrandi, a 50-year-old female who I had the pleasure to meet and interview, is 1 out of the about 3 million people in the world suffering from Celiac Disease. Celiac Disease is just one out of the many chronic illnesses that affect nearly 3 million people in America. It is a disorder that can lead to intestine damage if gluten is ingested. A strict, gluten-free diet is the only current treatment. Celiac, like other chronic illnesses, not only affects the health and body of someone, but it affects all aspects of one’s
One health condition that affects people is Coeliac Disease; this is intolerance to the protein ‘gluten’ which is found in wheat, barley and rye. When coming into contact with gluten the body produces antibodies which then attack the lining of the bowel. This then affects the body’s ability to absorb nutrients from food and can even lead to
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It causes inflammation of the lining of your digestive tract, which can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea and even malnutrition. Inflammation caused by Crohn's disease can involve different areas of the digestive tract in different people. The inflammation caused by Crohn's disease often spreads deep into the layers of affected bowel tissue. Like ulcerative colitis, another common IBD, Crohn's disease can be both painful and debilitating, and sometimes may lead to life-threatening complications. Although it may involve any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus, it most commonly affects the last part of the small intestine (ileum) and/or the large
Crohn’s disease is a life-long condition effecting victims of any age. It is considered a form of an inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation in the digestive system. The cause of the disease is unknown. The inflammation is due to the immune system attacking the healthy cells throughout the body’s gastrointestinal tract.
When a person has one, it doesn’t mean that by this time next week, it will go away. It means that they will continue to deal with the symptoms of that disease until the day they die. That is a daunting thought, often too large in scale for anyone to truly take seriously.
Although people may believe that disease comes from germs and viruses around them, but with Crohn’s disease that is not the case. Crohn’s is an inflammatory bowel disease that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This disease can form, inflame, anywhere from your stomach to small intestine. Patients who struggle with Crohn’s usually would need a lifetime of care just to contain the disease; there is still not a cure, but it impacts their daily schedule. Crohn’s is a disease doctors are still to find the reasoning for this disease and how they could solve it, but for now patients with Crohn’s will have improvise with their daily routine depending on how it affects them.
diagnosis doctors will review family history and do a physical examination. Some risk factors include cigarette smoking and some genetic mutations. In children, the use of antibiotics may have an effect leading to Crohn’s Disease. 1 Although CD may occur at any age, it tends to occur before the age of 30. The disease is common among whites and Eastern European Jewish descent. These ethnicities are at higher risk but Crohn’s disease can affect anyone.4
The disease I decided to base Project 2 on is Crohn's Disease. Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) of the digestive tract. This disease may be referred
The current return on sales ratio for the Department & Discount Retail Industry is 4.96%. The Department & Discount Retail also currently has a return on sales sector ratio of 9.26%. Both JcPenney and Target fell into the negatives for this ratio at the end of 2014. JcPenney credits the low ratio from the bad sales they had in 2014. A few of JcPenney’s goals are to boost sales in 2015 and close underperforming stores. Target credits the negative return on sales ratio in 2014 to stopping its operation out of Canada and the massive data breach that they had at the end of 2013. To get JcPenney and Target back to positive return on sales ratios they need to generate more sales while cutting costs. I think both stores are on track to fixing their
In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee’s depiction of Scout’s personality and aspects differs from the stereotyped ideal little girl. Lee uses Scout’s environment and relations to influence her persona. Jem has an effect on her character, for he told Scout when she was young that she “was being a girl” (Lee 54). Scout wants her brother’s approval and she wants to play with him which takes away from her femininity. Aunt Alexandra influences Scout differently compared to Jem.
Celiac disease is seen in about 1-2% of the population, with a 2:1 woman to men ratio (Lisa Ring Jacobsson, 2011). I choose this topic because celiac disease and gluten-free diets seem to be on the rise. In the past, the diet and lifestyle changes for people with celiac disease was very challenging, but in recent years there has been an increase in the amount of people being diagnosed with celiac disease. There is much more information out there about these special diets. Life has become much easier for those with celiac
“The colon cancer vs. Crohn’s disease debate is generating a lot of interest in the medical community. Every year in the U.S., approximately 57,000 people die from colorectal cancer and 147,000 new cases are diagnosed”states Dr. Victor Marchione. Crohn's disease is a new disease that was introduced into today's society in 2015. 1.4 million Americans have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Of those, about 700,000 have Crohn’s has been diagnosed in the years between 1992 and 2004 just from a doctor's visit. People have came up with different ways that we can help and prevent the disease such as Surgery, Conferences and “ KEY TO PROCESS “.
“I will keep fighting,” is what I remind myself as soon as the sun peaks up. Many people are not aware of Crohn’s, nor did I when I was diagnosed at age 8. I have learned Crohn’s is not just a simple disease; it changes lives. My experiences with Crohn’s built me into a stronger person, both physically and mentally. Crohn’s caused me to grow up rapidly, faster than my fellow classmates. Entering high school with Crohn’s had been a remarkably frightening experience, yet at the end of each day, I decided I was not going to allow my disease to define who I am. So when you walk through those high school doors, remember: be who you are, not what Crohn’s makes you. Participate in activities you loved to do before you got Crohns- just modify them.
