At the beginning of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie was a very troubled teen who through his experiences with his new found friends and encouragement from adults was able to realize that in fact, he was a very intelligent and engaging individual. I find Charlie unappealing as a friend because of his lack of a backbone. He is too sensitive for me. For example, when he starts crying about returning a book that he had gotten from Mary Elizabeth. He knew that he wasn’t invested in the relationship, but could not move past his act of betrayal. He also could not find it in himself to just break up with her. Even though Charlie is quite the overthinker and observer, he did not think of how his choice would affect Mary Elizabeth. I did not like how he lead her on or the way he broke up with her. Their breakup was embarrassing for Mary Elizabeth because it was in front of her friends and pointed out to her that Charlie thought that Sam was prettier than her. This would be especially crushing to her because of her ‘self-esteem issues’ that Charlie’s sister points out (page 130). ‘She said that by introducing me to all these great things, Mary Elizabeth gained a “superior position” that she wouldn’t need if she were confident in herself.’ Also, his passiveness is deterring. When Patrick was sad after his breakup with Brad, Charlie was his shoulder to cry on, but he was not able to guide Patrick to move on. Charlie just lets Patrick go on being sad for the longest time.
