Personal Statement
Studying criminology-related course has been among my personal and professional aspirations in life. The requirements for joining the profession of criminal justice vary from one institution or state to another. Leguelinel, Caridad (45) assert that the variation in the requirements depends on the career path one want to take. In some instance, institutions require an individual to pass a physical exam and a high school diploma (Leguelinel, Caridad 98). However, significant analysis of most of the local and state agencies shows that successful candidates to practice in the profession should have an associate’s degree. A bachelor’s degree is suitable for individuals planning to advance their studies to higher levels in the

For example, a criminal justice professional earns $35990 (beginners) and $60, 430 (potential) in the US (US College Search Blog RSS 1). Conversely, the same individual earns about $31000 (beginners) and $62000 (potential) in Canada (Columbia College 1). While there is minimal variation in the salary scale, the professionals enjoy the benefits of working in more than one firm involved in criminal justice issues. In addition, the evidence provided in the article “Criminal Justice Degree Requirements” reveals that the salary earned by the criminal justice professionals varies depending on one’s specializations. For instance, the article shows that individuals working as investigators and police professionals earn between $24700 and $75970, criminal investigators and detectives ($37960-$99980), and fish and game wardens ($30920-89130). The article also shows that individuals working as sheriffs and police officers earn $31400 to $83550, while correctional treatment officers and probation officers earn $30,540 to $78,860 (Criminal Justice Education Requirements 1). Leguelinel, Caridad (78) assert that the compensation provided to these professionals change depending on their level of education, position in their respective departments, and their experience in that specific field. This implies that it is expected that the salary that will be provided to a criminal …show more content…

Select one of the components of the criminal justice system (law enforcement, courts, or corrections).
When you see the shows such as Homicide Hunter or Killer Instincts many times my mom and I try to figure out who is the murder. Most of the time my prediction is right because of the details my mom misses, and putting together all the clues. From then on I realised I had a gift, even if it was I was just watching television show. That is what sparked my interest the criminal justice area. I have contemplated the career choices that would best fit my interest leaving me with Homicide Detective and Criminologist. While both careers deal with criminal justice they differ greatly in the type of work environment, pay, skills/education.
The law enforcement industry has become a less desirable job for Americans nowadays. The current shortage of police officer’s applications across the country are attributed to the diminishing pay, bad reputation, and dangerous nature of the job (Ali, 2017). Police departments around the country face severe scrutiny after heavy attention was drawn to police brutality incidents. The general belief that the law enforcement industry in America has a
Criminal justice practitioners are necessary for a civilized society. Without those who form boundaries to our freedom, and the ones that reinforce those laws, our community would be chaos. Some of the main social issues our society faces are drug abuse, gang violence, child abuse, and terrorism. The criminal justice practitioners face these types of issues daily. These professionals must act on the morals and laws stated by society rather than their own opinions, sometimes facing hard decisions. The criminal justice field is always active and busy, dealing with countless amount of criminal activity throughout the country.
For the past 50 years, America’s criminal justice system has encountered several significant changes dealing with courts and policing. According to Marion and Oliver (2006), the historical Supreme Court rulings like Mapp v. Ohio and Miranda v. Arizona mold the way courts and law enforcement handle individuals charged with committing crimes. This paper will discuss the evolution of courts and law enforcement reflects the diverse and changing need for today’s population which is first importance, the urgency for cooperation and communication among criminal justice agencies and law enforcement within the country. Individuals must
In my course of study at Ashford University, which began in February 2016, I have gained knowledge about all three areas of the criminal justice system; law enforcement, the judiciary, and corrections. The required resources; course textbook, articles, multimedia sources, and suggested websites provided material that enhanced my understanding of how each component of the justice system operates, their stated goals, and historical background. In addition, the interactive discussion boards offered an opportunity to get different perspectives from my peers who have experience in the field and shared those experiences, as well as, feedback and viewpoints from peers who had limited exposure to the system.
Criminal Justice Environment 1. Task One. This report will be about the involvement of lay people within the criminal justice system. You will be informed of how lay magistrates contribute to the criminal justice system and what it is they do.
The criminal justice career fair on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 was an event at the Hendrix Student Center on Clemson University’s main campus from 12 pm to 4 pm. This event was ground breaking for Clemson because it was the first ever career fair for criminal justice in its history. It was designed for Clemson students interested in criminal justice, law, and social service careers to explore potential career opportunities with various law enforcement agencies or to possibly attend one of the law schools present. The agencies that were there were diverse and included local, state, and federal levels. Some of the city police departments were from South Carolina and some were out of state (ex: Raleigh Police Department). Two law schools that were
I, Albranie Brandis Tamara Hines, remember when I first found interest in criminology as a young girl. On occasion I watched the average shows that little boys and girls my age watched however I was far more interested in the shows that my mother watched like forensic files, the first 48, CSI, and law and order. I grew up thinking that all of the scenes from those shows were equivalent to real life experiences before I knew what dramatization was. Going to high school and taking college prep classes was an advantage that I had because it allowed me to obtain knowledge in the criminology field by taking criminal justice classes prior to entering college. Thanks to the amazing criminal justice program that Stockbridge High School provided for
There are numerous amounts of occupations within the law and justice field. However, this paper will focus on the careers of forensic psychologists, criminal profilers and lawyers. It will discuss the overall profession description, job requirements, and salary and job growth of these particular occupations. After covering all of these professions thoroughly, we will then move to the topic of Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.). It will communicate the duties and responsibilities that Georgia Peace officers have and also declare the duty of the Georgia P.O.S.T. Council.
Throughout my three years at the University of Hartford, I have been taking classes towards my bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, such as Law and the Justice System, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Methods of Social Research, Deviance, Criminology, International Organized Crime, Women in Crime, Juvenile Delinquency, Prisons and Correction, and Policing. These classes and professors were helpful for developing my future career options and obtaining my internship with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) summer 2016.
As one of the newer fields of social science, criminal justice began as a study that took from sociology. “Critics thought that criminal justice was based on a weak empirical and theoretical foundation, and that it had nothing to offer which was not already available through some established discipline, principally sociology or the law” (Clear, 2001). Over years, criminal justice has begun to make a name for it. Today, many colleges and universities offer bachelors, masters and PhD programs for those pursuing degrees in criminal justice. For some, criminal justice may be seen as just a study for those wanting careers in law enforcement, although the field is also able to prepare its students for research related to crime and the reasons why
My immediate goal is to become a police officer and then one-day work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations (OSBI). This would be a great accomplishment for me within the field of criminal justice. My interest in becoming a police officer occurred in the class of Careers and Technology. Hearing the stories of speakers who have worked for police departments, sheriff departments, and the
I have been taking critical fundamental classes towards earning my bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice for four years now. During this time I have learned a great deal about criminal justice; based on the scientific study of crime by focusing on its history, causes and consequences of crime as well as the responses of the criminal justice system to crime, criminals, and the victim of theses crimes. Inside of the justice system I also have gotten acquainted with the substantive criminal law that defines criminal behavior by analyzing the general principles of criminal liability. Similarly, with examining American courts decisions to interpret the ruling and doctrines. Together with, many other informative courses such as, theories of crime
Because crime is one of the more appealing themes in popular culture, the public receives a skewed version of crime. The public’s knowledge may be particularly lacking with regard to the entire field of criminology, the differences between blue-collar and white-collar crime, and the general perception of the incidence of crime in the United States.
