The occupation that I chose to do my culminating project on was criminology. There are many reasons as to why I have chosen this topic, but two that stand out are the facts that criminology was the closest career that I could find on both myBlueprint and Career Cruising to Forensic Phycology, and that the job description such as talking to victims and suspects to gather information intrigued me. I have always been interested in the criminal justice system, thus, this occupation really stood out to me. Watching over children has made me very observant and my need to have things perfectly arranged shows how very detail-oriented I truly am, skills that a Criminologist also needs. Based on the personal inventories we did I am a helper, someone …show more content…
I personally am fine with having a quaint house on the outskirts of Toronto with a car to commute to work, which means that I would life a very happy and satisfied life with a median salary of $80, 000 per year. I’m also someone who is very restless and loves being in new work environments, so spending 40 hours or more every week sitting at a computer is something that I will not enjoy doing at all. At least I get to travel locally to gather information and conduct interviews with others, such a Forensic Scientists or Criminal Detectives. As a result of this assignment, I can tell that conducting interviews and analyzing trends are going to be two satisfactions that this occupation provides, because collecting data and then analyzing them is something I enjoy doing at the moment. Unfortunately, like everything, criminology also has its downsides, and it comes in the form of stress. Lots and lots of …show more content…
Thinking back to the beginning of this course, I remember not knowing what I wanted to be when I left High school, due to the abundance of careers I wanted to get into. After looking at a magnitude of careers and exploring my skills through various personality quizzes, I learned that not every job is best suited for me and it has greatly helped me limit and zone in on my choices. Through programs such as myBlueprint and career cruising, I was able to identify my skills along with my strengths and weaknesses so that I had a better understanding of what field I should go into. For example, when I learned that I was interpersonal and that I am an INFP (introversion, intuition, feeling, perceiving) individual, it helped me realize that I wanted to go into the social sciences so that I can help people out. It is one of the reasons as to why I decided to do my culminating research on criminology. The What Am I booklets gave me a vague idea of what type of person I was and by doing do I was able to eliminate the careers that fell into the other categories. For example, since I’m Helper-Thinker, I was able to rule out jobs such as Electrician and Lawyer because they didn’t fall under this category and most likely wouldn’t be suitable for an individual like myself. Likewise, the multiple and different skills and personality quizzes that we did helped us find jobs that would work well with our
When you see the shows such as Homicide Hunter or Killer Instincts many times my mom and I try to figure out who is the murder. Most of the time my prediction is right because of the details my mom misses, and putting together all the clues. From then on I realised I had a gift, even if it was I was just watching television show. That is what sparked my interest the criminal justice area. I have contemplated the career choices that would best fit my interest leaving me with Homicide Detective and Criminologist. While both careers deal with criminal justice they differ greatly in the type of work environment, pay, skills/education.

As a child, if you asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, and I answered a lawyer undoubtingly. Once my parents denied signing any of my financial aid forms for school, all of my optimism for that dream went downhill. One thing that has always been consistent is my love for fighting for what is right for the people. My passion for the law and people aided my decision to join the military. Upon my retirement from the military, I was compelled to enroll in the Criminal Justice program at Saint Leo University. After attending a few courses, I deliberated on becoming a forensic psychologist. I believed that becoming a forensic psychologist would allow me to be involved in legal cases while being the eyes and the ears of the courtroom. As time went on I pondered, if I would be helping people or the court system. Now, my interest in the subfields of psychology lies between forensics and counseling. I am not as knowledgeable in either area, so I plan on taking a course in each class to see what feels right. Being in the military all these years, have made me desire to do what my instincts say I was born to do.
The human mind has always fascinated me. Humanity is not only the only species to kill for pure game, but also the only species to inflict pain upon one another for their own enjoyment. It has always amazed me to watch a person do wrong and feel no sense of remorse or regret about it, this is why I have decided to study the thought process and reasoning behind crime by becoming a criminal psychologist. To begin my research I visited the Mississippi Choices website along with Psychology Schools 411 where I found information such as the everyday activities, the employment outlook, training and education required, and the estimated annual salary. Next, I visited the National Career Service website where I found information on working conditions. To find information such as the amount of positions available statewide and nationwide along with related occupations, I visited the Occupational Outlook Handbook Website.
Law enforcement is a career that is both violent and rewarding in many capacities. Justice needs to be served in law enforcement and they have a responsibility to uphold the law and serve the people in the community. Law enforcement is crucial in the world today as a global realm as life continues to be more complex and law enforcement struggles to combat many aspects of crime. In order to combat these problems and have a positive future in the criminal justice system, everyone must work together on a bigger scale.

Their responsibilities include not only preserving the peace, preventing criminal acts, enforcing the law, investigating crimes, and arresting those who violate the law but also directing traffic, community relations work, and controlling crowds at public events.
There will always be a fight for justice, and where there is crime there are those who must solve them. I wish to pursue a career in the criminal justice industry, mainly working as a forensic science criminalist. Those who use scientific logic and evidence found at the scene of the crime to solve the case, The heroes who don’t wear the labcoats instead of the black and blues. Heroes like these need certain skills, interests, and values that make them an official criminalist.

Many people ask me why I want to further my education and pursue a masters in criminology. My response has and always be the same. I want all there is that an education has to offer. I want to be greedy with my education. I want to learn everything that there is to learn about the criminal justice field.
Criminology first appealed to me during a mental health lecture. My tutor at the time was discussing the statistics of UK prisoners with a mental health condition. I found myself deeply saddened but also curious as to what I could do to help. I found myself wanting to know more. Does their mental illness cause them to commit crime?
This criminal justice field interests me for a number of reasons. The reason I picked this career is because it lines up with my overall life goals. My goal is to save someone's life for the better, and make a difference. I can start a career that I am passionate about, and to be a role model to someone. I plan to do this career at all costs because, deep down I know that I have the power to change something for the better. Whether it be someone’s life or their overall aspect of something. These have been my life goals for a the majority of my life and my passion has grown stronger. I plan on excelling in these goals and one day better my life or someone else. I feel this job is a suited
Ever since I was little I was extremely observant of the people surrounding me. I would watch and study their behaviors, always trying to figure out their thoughts and emotions. Recently I have realized that I could put my childhood play into a real life paying job, only instead of my peers I would get to study criminals. I don’t know much about Forensic Psychology other than the fact that I must achieve a PsyD, and I would be assigned different cities to live and work in. I want to learn about what is necessary for me to get the job, what the pay is, and what is required of me once I get the position.
Figuring out why people commit crimes is one of the central concerns of criminology. Do most criminals act rationally after weighing the costs of crime? Is society ever to blame for an individual to commit a crime? Do mental diseases or even genetics factor into whether a person will live a life of crime. Over the years, many people have developed theories to try to answer these questions. In fact, the number of theories of why people commit crimes sometimes seems to equal the number of criminologists. I explore these questions and much more in the paper that follow.
My ambition has always been to work in Criminology. I am applying for this course as crime, criminal justice, law and the psychology behind why people commit crimes has interested me since early childhood. Working within criminology requires a wide range of skills that include dedication, reliability, concentration and the ability to remain professional and I believe that I posses these skills.
the book Introduction to Criminology written by Anthony Walsh, and Craig Hemmens, there were numerous articles to choice from at the end of each respective section. The one that stood out the utmost was, Violent Victimization as a Risk Factor for Violent Offending Among Juveniles written by Jennifer N. Shaffer and R. Barry Ruback. In this article it talked about how juveniles have a considerably greater risk of becoming a violent victim of a crime, or become the violent offender. They conducted the research over the course of two years. Conducting the research followed by analyzing of the first year, then by same thing for the second year. What researchers Jennifer Shaffer and R. Barry Ruback had discovered from their test was phenomenal information on the correspondence between the two.
