Criminal Justice System Research Paper

The criminal justice system is composed of three parts – Police, Courts and Corrections – and all three work together to protect an individual’s rights and the rights of society to live without fear of being a victim of crime. According to merriam-webster.com, crime is defined as “an act that is forbidden or omission of a duty that is commanded by public law and that makes the offender liable to punishment by that law.” When all the three parts work together, it makes the criminal justice system function like a well tuned machine.

1. The topic that surprised me the most, was the criminal justice system. When it comes to black and brown people they are automatically guilty without there being a fair trial in court. The system is the same as it was then just as it is now for people of color.

According to Reiman, “A criminal justice system is a mirror in which a whole society can see the darker outlines of its face.” The criminal justice system should be there to protect us from crime, but it is there to project a credible image of the threat of crimes as a threat from the poor.

There are three significant issues concerning law enforcement, namely enacting the law, police discretion, and assessment of criminal behavior. Different entities create and enact laws that are specific for the societies those laws represent.

Ever wonder why many people are in jail or why the long period of time in jail? The criminal justice system is the set of agencies and processes established by governments to control crime and impose penalties on those who violate laws. It’s important to know about this because it's good to know how the government is trying to decrease the rate of crime. The criminal justice system affects society negatively because of the rate and length of incarceration, creating the poverty cycle and discrimination isn’t the best way to solve or stop crime.

Fred is drunk and driving his dad’s car. Fred is a 21 year old student at Columbia College. Fred rams into a parked car at 10th and Rogers. Thinking no one saw him; Fred moves his car and parks it on an adjacent lot. He sprints to his dorm room in Miller Hall. A neighbor saw the wreck and Fred running to the dorm. In the United States of America, there is a system referred to as the criminal justice system. This system assists in managing crime and helps to control society through rules and regulations. If these guidelines are disobeyed, there are consequences that follow. These consequences consist of being arrested by law enforcement, going to court to pay a fine or to be sentenced, and even going to jail or prison (Bohm & Haley, 2014).

From the Oval Office to the campaign trail to the streets of Chicago, Baltimore, and cities across the country, criminal justice reform was a prominent topic of discussion in 2015. But will all of that talk result in any action in 2016?

Every crime that people commit have consequences, depending on how big the crime was, the consequences can be worst and worst, those crimes can be paid on jail or community service, if you go to jail, and you are an adult, you are going to a jail in which everybody is an adult, or if you are an juvenile you are going to rehabilitation center, which is like jail but for juveniles. If you committed a crime, the court will decide where are you gonna go or how are you gonna pay for your crime, that is determined by whether you are an adult or a young person, they can say that you are an adult or a young person by your age, those ages can change according in what city or country you are. There are two kind of systems that say what is gonna be penance, those systems are the adult justice system and the juvenile justice system. There are more people incarcerated in the United States of America than any other country in the world willing to count their inmates (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2016). How can this be? Foremost, the criminal justice system in the United States of America (which is made up of the police, the courts, and the corrections) is not working toward reducing mass incarceration the way it should be. The criminal justice system is set up strategically to accomplish two goals: to bring in money and to gain power. The byproducts of achieving these two goals are mass incarceration, ethnic and racial profiling, and minimal justice. The system needs to change its goals to: reducing crime and doing justice. The police, the courts, and the correctional system all feed off of one another and affect each other. Therefore, if real change is going to be made, it needs to happen in all three branches of the criminal justice system. A system that seems to be working well is in Norway. Norway’s criminal justice system does not look like America’s system. The criminal justice system in Norway has different philosophies concerning crime, justice, and the corrections. "We don 't look at our inmates as criminals, but rather as regular people who have committed a crime."
