Abuse of Power Millions of people around the world have power, but they do not always use their power for the right reasons. Some people in a position of power abuse their power. When a person abuses their power they inflict fear and violence on others, which has a negative effect. One of the many ways power can negatively affect others is through fear. Even respectable leaders can abuse their power to cause fear. For example, Creon, the King of Thebes, uses his power to inflict fear on the town. Creon keeps the townspeople from burying Antigone’s brother. Creon threatens to kill whoever buries him, which causes fear throughout the town. This fear keeps Antigone’s brother from being buried, which goes against her family's beliefs and traditions.
After Antigone is brought forth and accepts the punishment of her burying her brother, Creon sends her away. At this time, Ismene steps up to defend Antigone and tries to get creon to realize that Antigone is his son’s future bride. Creon answers by saying, “There are other field just as fertile” (26). In this quote, he displays that he cares for neither Antigone, nor his son, Haemon. . He explains that there are other women around that could be just as a promising wife as Antigone. He exemplifies the theme of pride here, by putting that everyone gets replaced and that he does not put his son’s life first. Power, a theme that is primarily exemplified by Creon, appears multiple times throughout his dialogue. While discussing Antigone’s punishment with Haemon, Creon says, “This city will tell me how I ought to rule it?” (40). In this quote, Creon represents the theme of power. He is trying to show Haemon that HE is the king of Thebes and that no one will tell him how to rule, especially the citizens. In relation to present time, there are countless politicians that share the same characteristics as Creon, someone who takes their power for granted and will use it to take advantage of everyone.
Creon uses his power to create fear and to hurt his opposition. Creon made a decree to ban the burial of Polyneices. Antigone ,Polyneices sister, had to break the law to ler her brother to the underworld and to bring honor to her family. Crean thens kills her ,his own niece, for morning and helping her brother. Creon says “She is already dead” to the crying sister of antigone. All the rebels feared creon when he said Polyneices couldn't be buried because they thought they wouldn't be allowed to
Aaron Larsen 3-11-2024 Period 5 Antigone. Creon Uncle of Antigone, now the new king, started right after the death of Antigones brothers (Polynices and Eteocles). They were both heirs to the throne after the death of Antigones dad (Oedipus). So they made an agreement: one brother would rule for a couple of years and then the other would. But Eteocles didn’t let Polynices take the throne when his years were up.
A person that is responsible for a specific trouble or harm. Is that what Creon is?
If the book has villain, was his or her punishment justified? The main Villain in this novel is a character known as Creon. Creon is a descendent of the Greek Gods and has special powers just like the main character of this story, Helen, and her companions. The book labels these humans with extraordinary abilities as Scions.
There are many people in the world that have power. Their power is impactful to the people under them and maybe big enough for things like countries and the world. This is a big idea that Erich Remarque had when he was writing All Quiet on the Western Front. The war in the novel and the soldiers who take place in it are greatly impacted by the people who have control over them. The soldiers do not agree or like how they run things. A larger theme in All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque is power is bad because instinct takes over.
Through his actions Creon causes himself from being in complete control to losing everything, in Antigone, by Sophocles. Creon’s flaw of being arrogant causes him to lose everyone he loves because he chose not to listen to the advice of other people, causing him to lose complete control. Creon believes that since he is in charge he does not have to listen to other people and he is always right, his arrogance overtook him.
In the fictional play called Antigone, Sophocles creates a character named Creon who end up making a fairly big mistake. Throughout the book, Creon shows the reader how paranoid he is. He creates a number of ridiculous laws that when broken, gives the offender serious punishments such as jail time or even death. Creon is the king of the Greek city, Thebes. Creon rules the city with fear and everyone living in Thebes knows not to step out of their place. In this play, Creon is the tragic hero.
In the play “Antigone” written by Sophocles, many issues come to light regarding morality and virtue. While there may be many interpretations regarding whether Antigone is correct in her views or Creon is, the German philosopher Hegel argues that both are right to some extent. When the argument is analyzed from both point of views it is evident that they both have some moral reasoning leading to both cases being correct; however, since neither side is willing to put themselves “in the other persons shoes” to have a clearer view of the situation, it causes Creon and Antigone to be wrong at the same time. Both Antigone’s and Creon’s judgement is clouded because of their inability to understand the argument from the other person’s point of view,
Antigone is a Greek Tragedy that was written in 441 B.C. by Sophocles who is considered one of the great tragedians of the Greek time period and even today. Antigone is a complex play which centers on the two main characters, Antigone and Creon; Antigone is the daughter of Oedipus and the niece to Creon. This play starts with brothers to Antigone, Polyneices and Eteocles dying in war; they killed each other tragically while fighting over the throne of Thebes. Eteocles receives a respectable stately burial and Polyneices was considered a traitor and is disgraced, not allowed to receive a proper burial. If anyone gets close to the body of Polyneices or tries to bury him they would be condemned to death by King
Creon was not able to lead well, because he let the huge amount of power
Moreover, power highlights the inequity between males and females and results in the person becoming more emotional and taking everything more personal, and that power leads to an excess of pride which results in the ignoring of people’s warnings. All these things, especially ignoring the warnings of others, leads to a lot of suffering for the person with a lot of power and/or the loved ones of that person. Creon's pride and new power prompts him to prevent a burial for Polyneices, even though he is guilty of the same crime as his brother, Eteocles. Both men wanted to have the power of ruling Thebes alone and both men lost this battle equally. King Creon is corrupted by the same power that drove these men into
John Lennon said, “Part of me suspects that I’m a loser, and the other part of me thinks I’m God Almighty.” Hubris, or excessive pride, was one of the biggest themes in Ancient Greek culture. It has what killed heroes, and destroyed villains in mythology and even real life. In the play Antigone, written by Sophocles, I share the battle that Creon has regarding a conflict of personal character, which leads to the deaths of others caused by his tremendously large ego.
“I believe that the root of all evil is power,” (Patricia Cornwell). I think this quote says a lot about the power of power. Let’s think about some people who were incredibly evil. Hitler killed 11 million people (Schwartz), 49 million deaths were linked to Joseph Stalin (Ghosh), and Kim Jong-Un has executed 70 officials since coming into office in 2011 (Omara). That doesn’t even include all of the other people who have died because of him or who will die because of him in the future. What do all of these people have in common? Power. If none of these people had power, millions of lives could have been saved. But with all power comes evil, as proven by these three horrible people. Now, power may not be taken to this extent all the time. As
Power is like a virus, once it gets to one’s head, they’re corrupt. In Sophocles’ Antigone, both of Antigone’s brothers killed each other at war for the throne of Thebes. Creon, the new king, only honors and buries one, Eteocles. Creon bans anyone from burying the other brother, Polyneices but Antigone decides that she will in order to honor her brother. Creon gives two speeches, one about how he’s going to rule and how he forbids anyone from burying Polyneices, and another about bribery and how money corrupts people. He says that money is the reason someone has betrayed him by burying Polyneices. In Antigone, Sophocles uses the characterization of Creon to reveal the negative effects in the development of power.
