For two years, I have volunteered at a unique non-profit organization aimed at providing at-risk inner city youth with literacy skills and mentorship. As a mentor at The Writers’ Exchange, I provide individualized learning and structure to several very challenged and impoverished kids. The focus is on homework, literacy projects and field trips designed to incite creativity, communication skills, self-esteem and accomplishment. The facility is located in the poverty-stricken Downtown Vancouver Eastside, cited as the poorest school catchment in Canada, according to Statistics Canada. It is funded by donations and volunteers. Nearly all of the Writers’ Exchange children are from destitute, broken and often abusive homes, where health and socio-economic

The NCAA is a non-profit organization that organizes and executes college sports, which includes football, basketball, etc. Key word from the previous sentence would be “non-profit organization”. What kind of “non-profit organization” makes as much money as they do? The NCAA players bring in great revenue with their outstanding efforts in bringing their team up to the top, because that is what the fans like to watch. Now does it seem fair that the NCAA does not give the players back any money at all to the players that actually bring the money in? In simple terms the NCAA makes large amounts of profits and needs to start distributing some of the money to the players (History of College Basketball, 2013). According to another article, the

A not-for-profit organization responsible for the provision of leisure services would be Boys & Girls Club. This is an organization that truly holds up the values of being a not-for-profit organization. Their mission is "To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens" (Boys & Girls Clubs of America, 2013). With a mission such as this it is obvious that this is an organization that is about the youth and enabling them to grow as individuals.

With there being a negative stigma towards nursing homes, I’m sure you are aware that there are problems that need to be solved within the whole industry. One of the main problems that arises is abuse and neglect in many nursing homes which I am sure you are aware of. So many smaller problems that happen in nursing homes effect residents negatively and on a bigger scale can result in abuse or neglect among the residents. This issue became significantly aware to me when I began to work in a nursing home last year, and I experience first hand what occurs behind the doors. I was in training with other certified nurse aides and they were training me on how to perform certain tasks. While they were training me I
There's three things that I know: 1. I want to travel and help others 2. I want a career that allows me to forget about my income and focus on my impact 3. I want to start or greatly contribute to a non-profit organization. Traveling will always be an extremely important aspect of my life. Ironically, I have never been outside the United States, but I know that experiencing other cultures can greatly affect someone's life. For that reason, I hope to be apart of an organization that provides opportunities for the less fortunate to travel. An organization that could bring kids who lack funds from 3rd World countries to 1st World countries, providing them with work or education. Vice versa, 1st World kids leaving their social media behind to traveling
Many of those who work in non-profits do not do it for the money, of course money is very important, but they want to work in a place where they can develop skills and advance and intelligent employers provide ongoing training and promotions for employees to further their engagement in the organization. However, despite limited budgets, nonprofit employers seem still competing against other employers in the market for top talent. therefore, efforts must be made to develop pay scales that are as competitive as possible to attract the level of talent and skills needed. Moreover, many nonprofits do not have a succession plan in place which means they seem not prepared for the departure of key employees and they do not have a formal career path
As a non-profit organization, our company has been profoundly doing well in helping raise money for families. Being with an organization which is committed to providing assistance to families in impoverished towns is very generous. Although, there is a concern I would like to address regarding using certain data we are using in our annual reports. The company uses pie charts to display data and prefers one type of pie chart over the other. I feel that we should use the pie chart which demonstrates the percentages.
Three years ago I co-founded a non-profit organization, One Jersey. One Goal. (www.onejerseyonegoal.com), with my younger sister. We collect used soccer jerseys and redistribute them in team sets to underprivileged kids worldwide. Spearheading most of the project to date, while encouraging my sister to learn the skills to continue our mission when I leave for college, has been rewarding. I believe that I am the perfect UC candidate because I am a go getter, I have learned to overcome what seems to be the hardest concept to grasp by the modern day teenageer (networking with adults), and I am not afraid to defy the college student stereotype by creating my own ideas and pursuing them.
Social entrepreneurship is gaining such strong interest in nonprofit world because of the economic challenges that have plagued this sector with cuts in philanthropic and government funding. According to Nash (2010) not only are there cuts, there are many organizations vying for the limited funding. Studies support, the attitudes in capitalistic America, and the ease of nonprofits to embrace this concept; evidenced by their ability to sell their once free services, to meet the demands of the consumer. According to the IRS (2010) nonprofits have increased their selling power on unrelated business income, to the tune of 184% increase, in a sixteen-year time frame. This writer, believes these numbers are evidence which support this trend is
