My BIO 2302-02 class was presented with the challenge to create Piedmont Environmental Alliance’s (PEA) new program. PEA is a volunteer-based non-profit group they have minimal staffing to make this request a reality. ¨The mission of Piedmont Environmental Alliance, Inc. (PEA) is to inspire people to make choices that protect and restore the environment.¨(1)They needed our help to develop their next environmental education program for deployment in local middle schools. This challenge would be one of the last determining factors for our final grade in the course. As we met and tried to discussed our up and coming group presentation, we tried to figure what we were going to do. As we tried to figure out a solution to our problem we begin to think. We went over a number of questions in our heads. Such as, what will align with North Carolina Essential Standards for 6-8 grade science, BIO 2302 course outline and PEA Mission? Then I thought to myself, what would I want to do for an engaging activity if I were in a 6th, 7th, or 8th grade science class. Each meeting we started to ask each other important questions. Do we want talk about ecosystems, rocks, life science, etc? Will that be engaging enough for the students? Should we do something dealing with building things? We continued to think about what topic to choice for the program and come up with three engaging activities for 6th-8th graders. I picked the topic were students are introduced to the concept
The artifact I have chosen to attach to the discussion board was CE230 unit nine project. What I learned based on that assignment was how to develop creative activities for young children from the age of five and seven. After completing the different activities with the students in this project we had to show what were the student’s objective and what leaning experience where you trying to achieve and was it accomplished with this activity. Example after completing the activity you would indicated if the student was able to follow directions. You would observe if the child was able to correctly solve the problems and it the students showed interest in the game. I recalled when I was in grade school we played Math Bingo it was fun and educational.

3. Describe how your instruction linked students’ prior academic learning and personal, cultural, and community assets with new learning.
I see environmental education as an opportunity to create passionate young leaders and to educate them on current environmental issues. I believe that my role as a First Year Honors Program Leader has helped prepare me to assist in creating plans for environmental education and community outreach, which are also components of the internship positions that I am applying for. As an honors program leader, I had to create lesson plans for incoming freshmen in a bi-weekly seminar style class to help ease their transition to Iowa State. In addition to this, my time as a tutor for entry level life science classes has shown me my potential as an educator in the environmental field. Leading a class of twelve freshmen students and being a tutor has helped me to increase interpersonal relationship skills and taught me to educate through fun, engaging
The Pine Jog Fellowship is a three-semester dual-enrollment program that focuses on environmental improvement and education. I was required to facilitate an environmental project with elementary school students for the course. The project that my students and I chose to pursue was to restore their school’s butterfly garden. The goal of the project was to provide all students with hands-on opportunities to learn about butterfly metamorphosis, butterfly food preferences, and habitat needs. In addition, students learned how to grow and care for plants.

I specifically like the ideas on the site that include building sight word vocabulary and the reading racetrack print out so that I can make this a game with my students. I would use these types of activities with my younger struggling students. The letter cube blending phonics activity is also an activity that I would like to incorporate into my tutoring sessions. If I already had a classroom, I would incorporate this into a centers type activity. The fluency topic about paired reading is something that I had not heard of. I think this activity would be an awesome addition to my tutoring sessions that I spoke of earlier. This is an activity that I could collaborate with their parents on so that they could carry this into the home setting. For some of my older students, I would like to incorporate some reading comprehension strategies like the oral recitation lesson. That is an activity that we can use to build on throughout the

Ever since I was a young child, I had a passion for nature. Aided by my parents, this drive was always fueled by day hikes, week long tenting trips, beach days, and long walks in the woods. This exposure to nature made me realize how precious and fragile it was. My passion for nature then escalated into a passion for the environment and protecting it. After taking Environmental Science at high school my junior year, I was able to blossom that passion for environmental protection into a reality with the inception of the Sustainability Squad. The sustainability Squad is an environmental awareness club who’s mission is, “promoting a sustainable lifestyle in and around York high school by spearheading initiatives such as the garden center and

Identifying concerns of a community is crucial to designing a program to improve the quality of a community. Priorities will then need to be established for environmental health performance standards for the control of pollution to the air, water, land and any other source that may be exposed. This plan will ensure that Jersey County standards and priorities follow the guidelines set by the EPA.
The reading of the life of Sally Ride appeared as a very engaging activity to me. While reading, Ms. House would allow simple questions and comments, but knew when to stop them and move on. Her students also seemed to know that when she moved on it was time to be quiet and listen. After reading, the students turned to a partner and discussed the story. This was a great way
Also, I would ask students to pair up and share their thoughts on pioneer women and how clever they were making quilts for their families to keep them warm. One way a teacher can get students actively involved is to as students how they feel about making quilts. I would also make sure I pair students with ELLs students for listening and speaking activities. The most activity comes when students talk in pairs and listen to each other. In pairs, each student is a talker or listener, so no one is left out of the speaking and listening
Below I have designed two activities that would include inquiry-based learning, be culturally relevant and meaningful, and that would also be engaging (Hare, 2016a).
Throughout the day I was able to learn and see the structure in which this program is designed and how it works for the children. Because it was a summer school program they merely just played and had fun most of the day. The biggest group activity was doing the craft for the day. Some kids were eager to participate and other were not. The project was manageable but somewhat difficult and it took all hands-on deck to get it finished. The teachers decided to bring in the kindergarten class so that the older kids could help them get through it. The bigger kids were troopers and really stepped up to help them. The teacher maintained a well-structured and organized classroom even when there were lots of children.
