Crack is a crystallized freebase form of Cocaine that is smoked and not sniffed. It has other nicknames such as rock, 8 Ball, work, dope, hard, iron, cavy, and base. No matter the alias, it’s most commonly known as Crack. Crack is known it’s short, but intense high it produces when smoked.

The coca leaves used to make cocaine has played a large part in our history. However, crack cocaine was not synthesized until the 1970s when cocaine was very popular. Then came a source of a new drug, crack cocaine which swept the nation of America. Due to an immense influx of cocaine, the value decreased predominantly, though it was still considered a drug for the high class. So when crack hit, mainly in the inner cities, it took a drastic turn for the
Dr. Jeffery Rosecan, director of the Cocaine Abuse Treatment Program at Colombia-Presbyterian Medical Center often describes crack addicts, often called “crack-heads” as follows, “They first start to suffer personality changes especially paranoia, then their lives start to fall apart, along with their relationships and they move into a life of emotional extremes, crime, illness, and possibly death.”
Crack cocaine has been popular since the 1970s and mid 1980s. Crack cocaine is not a new drug; this drug is obtained from coca plant which grows mainly in South America. For many years, the native South American Indians chewed its leaves to develop strength and increased energy. By the 1800s, the cocaine was secluded from its leaves and used as a medicinal drug. By the late 1800s, it was used as an anesthetic and to avert surgical hemorrhage. The next century, people recognized crack cocaine an addictive narcotic and its non-medical use of the drug was ended by the Harrison Narcotics Act in 1914 (“How crack cocaine works?”).

Stimulant drugs rev up the central nervous system by increasing heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure. Thus, someone who abuses stimulants will experience enhanced positive emotional reactions and a minimized level of negaitve emotional reactions, as well as alertness. This is supported by the fact that all cocaine enters the United States in powder form (Cocaine.org, 2014). The addition of baking soda or ammonia to turn cocaine into crack, in turn, actually makes crack not as strong of a drug. According to Bracy (2015), the effects of crack or cocaine are due to method of ingestion not a difference in substance. If both drugs are basically the same, why is possession of crack enforced differently? People on this side of the argument would say it is because of who uses crack. Being a modified version of powder cocaine, crack is cheaper and more prevalent in low income areas. Thus, the drug is commonly associated with minorities, particularly African
Domestic violence and substance abuse reached new depths with the availability of crystal methamphetamine as the new leisure drug of the masses. Going by various street names such as speed, crank, glass, and ice, this demon drug knows no race, creed, or status and is all pervasive in its abuse. "Cocaine and crack are among the most addictive substances known to modern science, and they have already ruined the lives of millions of Americans" (Morganthau and Miller, 208). Cocaine and crack are both dangerous, harmful drugs. Though pleasurable effects can be obtained from these drugs, the use of crack and cocaine cannot be worth the actual consequences that are inflicted on mind and body. The bad effects of these drugs, by far outweigh the good. Because crack and cocaine are so closely related, it is important to have a firm understanding of both drugs.
The substance of cocaine has affected the people in a negative way, causing the government to ban the substance and making it illegal for anyone who uses the illegal drug. John Brooks, PhD and MD states information about the making of cocaine and how it came about, “in the late 1800 's cocaine was introduced to the US and it was consumed by dissolving in a fluid and either drinking or injecting it… crack is created by mixing the hydrochloride form of cocaine with baking soda and water and then evaporating the water.” The product cocaine comes in two different forms, powder and crack, but are the same substance. Cocaine really originated from coca trees, Cocaine is extracted from the coca plant (Erythroxyium coca from South America accounts for 95% of worldwide productions). Influences from South America introduced cocaine into the U.S. The existence of cocaine, formed from a single plant devastated America and would later increase prison populations. Although, prisons were split by age, crime, and sex, another factor formed; cocaine. Cocaine is presented as a powder and crack and has two different sentences depending on its form, although they are the same drug.
