There are many different ways moods can be changed. In the article “Cowboys Home on Wheels” and the poem “U-S-U Range,” it uses food to show how it affects cowboys’ moods. The author of the article and the poet both emphasize how the quality of food has an effect on cowboys’ morale by showing how their moods change with appetizing and unappetizing food. In the story, “Cowboys Home on Wheels,” the article presents the idea that the quality of the food affects the cowboys’ morale by showing how they work for warm, appetizing meals. In paragraph 1, it states, “He couldn’t promise easy jobs or even nice weather. But he decided that decent, warm meals might entice men to work for him.” Then in paragraph 10, it says, “The chuck wagon was much more …show more content…
Overall, when cowboys’ are fed appetizing meals, it boosts their attitudes positively and gives them more motivation. Next, the poem “U-S-U Range” talks about how unappetizing food can cause cowboys to have low morale and lack motivation. According to line 19-21, it states, “You are up in the morning at the daybreak to eat cold beef and U-S-U steak, and out to your work no matter if it rains.” Lastly, in lines 25-30, it says, “And set down to supper and begin to complain of the chuck that you eat on the U-S-U range. The grub that you get is beans and cold rice and U-S-U steak cooked up very nicely; and if you don’t like that you needn’t complain, for that’s what you get on the U-S-U range.” When the cowboys’ are fed unappetizing, cold meals, it shows how they gain negative morale and they become less motivated or positive. Furthermore, when cowboys’ are fed gross and tasteless meals, their attitudes shift from good to bad and they are not willing to do everyday work activities. In conclusion, the quality of food can affect the morale of cowboys positively and negatively depending on what they are
Most of the food provided in industrial slave compounds consisted of food found on rural plantations - corn and less desirable parts of the pig. Some corporations provided enough food to satisfy the slave’s appetites because a healthy slave was more productive than a slave
He confesses, “The men and women slaves received, as their monthly allowance of food, 8 lbs. Of pork, or its equal in fish, and 1 bushel of corn meal” (6). His central idea is to truly explain oppression and the hardships he personally went through. The amount of food slaves have to sustain for a month is nowhere near the requirement for one’s daily nutrients. This leads to slaves being malnourished, which affects their ability to work.
Due to their initially slave life style, Washington’s mother was not able to fulfill his appetite for his every desire. However, she indefatigably worked to keep her family alive and through her privations she was able to demonstrate the virtues of determination, tenacity, and gratitude into Washington. During the time that Washington’s family was working on a plantation, before the Emancipation Proclamation, they were living in abominable conditions. The cabin, at which they called home, was stricken with countless amounts of cavities, and was accompanied by a deplorable dirt floor. Fearing that her children would starve, Washington’s mother stole a chicken and would cook it “late at night (P5)” for “the purpose of feeding them (P5).” Washington
Next, Schlosser visits Colorado Springs, CO and investigates the life and working conditions of the typical fast-food industry employee, fast-food restaurants have among the highest employee turnover rates and pay minimum wage to a higher proportion of their employees than any other American industry. The second part of the book begins with a discussion of the chemical components that make the food taste so good. Schlosser follows this with a discussion of the life of a rancher, considering the difficulties presented to the agricultural world in a new economy. Schlosser is perhaps most provocative when he critiques the meatpacking industry, which he tags as the most dangerous job in America. Moreover, the meat produced by slaughterhouses has become exponentially more hazardous since the centralization of the industry: the way cattle are raised, slaughtered, and processed provides an ideal setting for E coli to spread. Additionally, working conditions continue to grow worse. In the final chapter, Schlosser considers how fast food has matured as an American cultural export following the Cold War: the collapse of Soviet Communism has allowed the mass spread of American goods and services, especially fast food. As a
The traits that the cowboy lived by are numerous and varied from individual to individual. What one man considers a rule to live by another may consider unimportant or below them, no account of the traits that define cowboys will never be all encompassing and entirely accurate to all those who called themselves or who were called cowboys. There will always be differences in the way they acted and held themselves throughout their lives. The way that the Virginian acted and held himself varies greatly from the reported disposition of many cowboys throughout history.
“There would be meat that had tumbled out on the floor, in the dirt and sawdust, where the workers had tramped and spit uncounted billions of consumption germs. There would be meat stored in great piles in rooms; and the water from leaky roofs would drip over it, and thousands of rats would race about on it. It was too dark in these storage places to see well, but a man could run his hand over these piles of meat and sweep off handfuls of the dried dung of rats. These rats were nuisances, and the packers would put poisoned bread out for them; they would die, and then rats, bread and meat would go into the hoppers together.”

Women were told to tend to the house and garden. English settlers in the seventeenth century ate three meals a day; breakfast, dinner, and supper. “The Colonial American breakfast was far from the juice, eggs and bacon of today. On frontier outposts and on farms, families drank cider or beer and gulped down a bowl of porridge that had been cooking slowly all night over the embers... In the towns, the usual mug of alcoholic beverage consumed upon rising was followed by cornmeal mush and molasses with more cider or beer”.
While seeming to be focused more on volunteer and career departments that have members that live at the fire station, the premise of his research can improve the fire service as a whole. Through his supporting article, “Eating together at the Firehouse: How Workplace Commensality Relates to the Performance of Firefighters” it is evident that fire department personnel that put an emphasis on communal interaction have an improved performance level, and higher job satisfaction. The idea of eating and preparing meals together as a shift in the fire service was studied through this documented research. Examining the results of this research Matt was able to summarize that meals are an aspect of team building and an important aspect to improving motivation. It allows for an informal communication setting as well as encouraging member participation. The presentation supported the benefits found in Brett’s presentation and showed the use of an everyday activity to work on team improvement. The only missing element of this presentation was a clear incorporation of the week’s course material, yet the presentation was very informative and well
Mood can be made by setting, subject matter, or word choice. There can also be several moods in just one literary work. The Poem, “The tide rises, the tide falls,” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, contains mood and meter. The mood in this poem is a hopeful and optimistic one. “The little waves…efface the footprints…nevermore Returns the traveler to the shore,” (276).

The golden arches of McDonalds... Fast foods...Junk foods...Processed foods.... They all have taken permanent residence in our lives. They're tasty and some of the best 'anytime' snacks that always have at least a couple of takers. No wonder they are so popular. In this essay I will be discussing the pros and cons of fast foods in general and McDonalds particulalrly (as it’s the world's largest chain of hamburger fast food restaurants, serving around 68 million customers daily in 119 countries).
When I first read this week's assignment, I instantly thought of the smiling faces I often see at Chick-fil-A. While I'm not a huge Chick-fil-A fan, no one can dispute the professional and pleasant attitudes of its employees. Indeed, the industry giant is known for a healthier style menu
The results states that the food consumption increased after the condiments were introduced to the participants which states if there is a slight variety in the food which can help to increase the food intake by the customers. (Brondel, Lauraine, Wymelbeke, Romer, & Schaal, 2009) has led research to note the alteration between food in meals in humans. For this study researcher has led study on 16 volunteers (8 males and 8 females) in three sessions. Each sessions differs from the alteration of food given to the participants. The result indicates that the alteration of food during lunch increases the consumption of food while alteration of food at the end of the meal decreases the consumption of the meal. The overall results can be very helpful for the company as it highlights on the importance of introducing food variations in the menu on overall food consumption which can benefit to Bigbite food truck and helps the company to introduce different variety of food in their menu according to the people
