“Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.” Brene Brown. This quote means standing up for what you believe in, despite the risks. Courage means taking a chance without knowing what will come out of it. That is exactly what Katniss Everdeen did in The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, is a yearly event where the Capitol picks one boy and one girl from each district to fight in a deadly survival game for entertainment and to show Panem’s residents the Capitol is in charge. Each district is responsible for Panem’s economy. Districts with a higher number like 12 are poorer than districts with lower numbers like one. Inferring from the Reaping, Katniss would always care for her family, especially her sister Prim. Rue reminded Katniss of Prim because of her soft demeanor and young age. Katniss realized the Capitol’s cruelty by sending a twelve-year-old girl into a death battle. After Rue warned Katniss of the Trackerjackers, a mutation made by the Capitol that can cause great harm or even death; Katniss formed a close alliance with her. Rue is later killed by District 1, Marvel and Katniss realize what Peeta meant when he said he wanted to show the Capitol that they don’t own him. Katniss sings and places flowers on Rue’s body to symbolize she isn’t just a piece of the Games. This quote shows how Katniss realized she wanted to fight against the Capitol, “I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of every tribute they can own. That Rue was more than a piece of their game. And so am I. (Collins, pg 232-233) Nonetheless, Rue’s death is significant because of Katniss’s courage to avenge
