Courage means taking a chance without knowing what will come out of it. That is exactly what Katniss Everdeen did in The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, is a yearly event where the Capitol picks one boy and one girl from each district to fight in a deadly survival game for entertainment and to show Panem’s residents the Capitol is in charge. Each district is responsible for Panem’s economy. Districts with a higher number like 12 are poorer than districts with lower numbers like one. Inferring from the Reaping, Katniss would always care for her family, especially her sister Prim. Rue reminded Katniss of Prim because of her soft demeanor and young age. Katniss realized the Capitol’s cruelty by sending a twelve-year-old girl into a death battle. After Rue warned Katniss of the Trackerjackers, a mutation made by the Capitol that can cause great harm or even death; Katniss formed a close alliance with her. Rue is later killed by District 1, Marvel and Katniss realize what Peeta meant when he said he wanted to show the Capitol that they don’t own him. Katniss sings and places flowers on Rue’s body to symbolize she isn’t just a piece of the Games. This quote shows how Katniss realized she wanted to fight against the Capitol, “I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of every tribute they can own. Well, that is exactly what happens in the novel The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins. The Hunger Games are games hosted by the Capitol to remind the twelve districts how strong they truly are. Every year, twenty-four tributes are chosen to fight in these games. Two tributes from each of the twelve remaining districts of Panem, one male and one female between the ages of twelve and eighteen.
This action shows that Katniss not only respects Rue, but also protests the game’s cruelty. This gesture of kindness not only demonstrates Katniss’s compassion for her friend, but also shows her rebellion against the Capitol. Katniss Everdeen is a female tribute from District 12 and she is the main character from my chosen novel. Katniss volunteered on behalf of her sister Primrose Everdeen's and took her place in the 74th Hunger Games after Prim's name was called during the selection of tributes from District 12(Collins 21). Originally, Katniss had no intention of going into the games, but she did not think that she is going to participate as female tribute in the games. In order to understand Katniss, we must understand her relationships with Gale, her sister Prim, her mother and Peeta. Katniss father died when she was 11 years old, following the death of her father, her mother went into a deep depression which left Katniss solely responsible for taking care of herself and her sister Prim.

Many readers do not see past the hatred and violence, and believe this is not a book for young adults and pre-teens, but what they do not see is the love and romance throughout the novel. There are many heartfelt moments and lessons that are overlooked because of the vast amount of mass murder in the novel, but there is one thing that is often too frequently missed that should not be because of the great lessons it can teach young teens and adults. In the movie film The Hunger Games, the nation of Panem is a society very dissimilar to our own. Since she was on her own for a while, she was able see how the other tributes played and what they were skilled in. She was also able to focus on getting better with her slingshot and get better at tree hopping without being seen by others. After Rue met Katniss and allied with her they developed a unique friendship. They knew that they both couldn’t win the games but they didn’t really concentrate on that. They just did whatever they could to sabotage the other tributes and make their chances of winning better.
