Courage: Displayed by Characters Courage is an action shown by brave people that stand up for what they believe in. Soldiers are a prime example of courage, they show courageous actions everyday. Everyday, soldiers put their on the line to protect others. People by choice, choose to become a soldier; they arent forced to. Not only do soldiers demonstrate courage, but characters in stories also show more couragous acts. These authors write stories containing courageous actions to set forth an example for future generations. Night by Elie Wiesel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and “Goin’ Fishin’” by Chris Crutcher, all provided us with extrodinary courageous actions through characters they created. In the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel, courage is a main theme. First, Moishe the Beatle shows courage by stating, “‘Jew’s listen to me! That’s all I ask of you. No money. No pity. Just listen to me!”’ (Wiesel 7). Moishe decided to come back to his town and warn the only people he knew instead of being silent. Secondly, Elie shows courage by staying with his father and helping his father during his last days. Elie visited his father and gave him his rations of food. Finally, the French girl provides a courageous act by cleaning off Elie’s face …show more content…
First, Lionel shows courage at the end of the short story when he goes out to find Neal and forgive him. He is choosing to forgive the person who killed his family and ruined his life. Secondly, Neal shows courage by going to Lionel’s house to try and talk to him. Neal is dying and wants to face Lionel to make things right. Finally, Elaine says, “‘ What’re you gonna do, Lion? Beat me up? Like you did Neal Anderson. Or his mom.”’ (Crutcher 103). Elaine is telling Lion that what he did was wrong, even though Neal ruined Lionel’s life. In conclusion, the characters in “Goin’ Fishin’” show strong examples of courageous
Courage is the ability to stand up for ones beliefs and ethics that the Army has been bestowed on them, despite the danger they may face on duty. Courage which is the result of training and discipline is the kind upon which the control of men in battle is based. With such courage, the man when facing
“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” (Winston Churchill,) In the memoir, “Night,” by Elie Wiesel, Elie who is very profound of his Jewish religion and Heritage. He is a Jewish boy who was sent to a concentration camp during the time of the Holocaust and is a survivor of it. He wrote the book “Night” after the events that happened during the Holocaust. In the book, the reader would think Elie Wiesel and Moishe the Beadle would agree with the quote from Winston Churchill.
One good example of courage is in Homer's epic poem, “The Odyssey,” when Odysseus enters the Cyclops’ cave. In the epic poem Odysseus and his men enter the Cyclops cave and the text states “We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield..." (Homer 157-158). This example demonstrates that Odysseus enters a Cyclops cave and is not fearful. Odysseus enters the cave because he sees treasure and wants to get it for him and his crew. Odysseus chooses to enter the cave even though he knew the cave was the Cyclops home and this demonstrates courage, and this is why the trait should be encouraged. Another good example of courage that sticks out is Newton Knight, who chooses to help slaves even though he lives in the south during the Civil War. In the Biography.com Editors’s article, “Newton Knight,” Knight chooses to stop fighting for the Confederate Army and goes back to his hometown to help slaves, as the text states “They saw themselves as defending the residents of Jones County from the Confederacy” (Biography.com Editors 1). Therefore, this example demonstrates that Knight chooses to fight against the Confederate Army even though he lives in Mississippi. It takes a lot of courage to go up against the Confederate Army even though he lived in the south and almost everyone was against him. It should
In the book Night, Elie Wiesel demonstrates and shows courage during the Holocaust through his actions. First, Elie tells Stein, his relative, that he has heard from Stein’s wife, Reizel, and his children and that they are fine. Although Elie had not heard anything about Reizel and Stein’s children, he lies to Stein because he knew that it would give Stein courage and a reason to live on. Second, during a selection, Elie runs after his dad and brings him back from the left side, the weak side, to the right side, the healthy side. Elie went after his dad because he wants to save his father from getting killed, this shows courage because the risk that he took could have led himself to his own death.
The point of view of a surviving holocaust victim is essential to the realization of the severity of the holocaust. Elie is one of those who has survived the holocaust. Within the book Night Mr. Wiesel does an amazing job at describing his experiences to his readers. Mr. Wiesel tell his readers how the SS officers treated the victims. He wrote about how the SS officers beat and killed anyone who was defiant. Mr. Wiesel also writes about the Jews that had been killed. He wrote about the reasons the Jews were killed or die. Like starvation or being killed for not being strong enough to work. Elie Wiesel wrote a lot about his experience. I find that to be brave do to the amount of detail he put into it and have it think of
The value of courage in the face of adversity is shown in Ender’s Game and To Kill a Mockingbird. The definition of courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus shows courage when he is against the mob who is trying to hang Tom Robinson. “A flash of pain fear was going out of his eyes… He put the newspaper down very carefully adjusting its creases with lingering fingers. They were trembling a little.” (Harper Lee pg 152) In this quote Atticus realized that the mob was very dangerous, but he had to protect Tom Robinson. This is where Scout realized how much courage her father had. She saw that he did not back down and looked up to him for that. The author wants to tell the reader to have courage and to stand up for
In the start of the book, Moishe is introduced by Elie as an awkward fellow who stayed out of people’s way but was very wise when it came to faith or anything about his God. In the beginning, we get to see a blossoming relationship between Moishe and Elie, with Moishe serving as a mentor to Elie in his study of the Kabbalah and God. However, we see a twist in their relationship when a transport comes to take all foreign jews away, and Moishe being one caused him to have to leave on the transport. This transport caused much distress in Sighet for a short while but “the deportees were quickly forgotten,” (Wiesel 6). All of the citizens of Sighet returned to their usual doings and rumored about what they thought had happened to the deportees. Meanwhile, Moishe had seen sights that he never expected to see in his lifetime. For example, Jews were told to dig holes not knowing that they would soon be shot and put in those graves they dug for themselves, and babies were being thrown up and shot in the air, something that seemed like a game to the Gestapo and S.S. men. Moishe happened to get shot in the leg and received the blessing of being able to sneak away from the Galician forest, where they were taken, and return to Sighet to warn the jews about what he had seen, yet no jew believed him and he ended up changing and not for the
He is saying that being in a concentration camp is changing him. His world is now changed because of the things he saw and was put through. When Moishe got freed from the concentration camp, he wanted his story out. The ghettos were a quarter of the city, where Jews were brought to by the cattle cars. They were required to live there and they could not leave.
Courage’s importance comes into play if choosing to live life to the fullest. “The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear.” A revealing and mysterious novel “Jasper Jones” by Craig Silvey has Jasper (14) appearing at Charlie Bucktin’s (13) home late one night. Feeling the exhilaration Charlie takes up Jaspers offer to follow him into the woods, nervous and excited they crept through the night. Charlie and Jasper discover something that never will leave their conscience.
Frederick Douglas once said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress,” which is a statement that undeniably holds true to the everyday life of humans and literary beings. When faced with tough situations, the way the struggles are handled can determine the progress one makes. In Night, a memoir written by Elie Wiesel to describe his experience during the Holocaust, Wiesel witnesses situations that definitely scar him and allow him to flourish in a positive manner. In his adolescence, Elie Wiesel was sent to a concentration camp with his father. During his time there, he finds it difficult to keep his will to survive due to the traumatic events that he sees. By the time he leaves the camp, he becomes a strong and mature young man who is ready to live his life the best he can after losing everything.
Courage can be defined in different ways as shown by Anne Sexton’s “Courage” poem and Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird. Sexton would say courage comes in small acts and in these small acts of courage are what teaches people how to find the strength within themselves to accept things the way they are. Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in the novel, would argue that courage is perseverance and fighting till the end even though the battle may have already been lost. This novel takes place around the 1930s, and is told through the eyes of Scout Finch. From her, one might learn about her father, Atticus Finch, an attorney who hopelessly aims to prove the innocence of a black man wrongly accused of rape. Both definitions of courage can be found in three characters in the novel; Atticus’ determination to help Robinson, Scout’s ability to conceal her emotions, and Mrs. Dubose’s perseverance to fight till the end.
The importance of courage is that it helps continue with our story or life. Courage gives us strength and bravery to keep moving on with our life. If we didn’t have courage we would be still and not want to move on with our life. In the book Peace like a River by Leif Enger, Ruben, the main character, has courage to move on and go find his brother. Ruben finds the courage to go to go find work, when Jeremiah got sick and couldn’t support the family. Ruben find the strength and brave to go up to the stand and testify of what he saw during the shooting. Last Ruben had the courage to go and find Davy in the Badlands.
Steve Goodier once wrote, “My scars remind me that I did indeed survive my deepest wounds.” Night by Elie Wiesel is a memoir about Elies life during The Holocaust. He was a young boy when he was taken from his home in Sighet, Transylvania and brought to concentration camps. He was separated from his mother and two sisters and was left with his father. Determined for him and his father to live, Elie faced many people who didn't want him to keep going and others who encouraged him to keep going. Although Elie faced many challenges, those challenges reminded him he already came so far, so why not finish strong. In Night, characters like Elie's father had a positive effect on Elie, while others like the SS guards and prisoners who were given power
Courage shows strength, and a willingness to do what is right even though it may be hard. Although Harper Lee would define courage as taking one for the team and helping each other to get it done quicker. In TKM ways of courage are shown to demonstrate her meaning. I have chosen three examples of courage to explain from TKM“Atticus's hand yanked a ball-tipped lever as he brought the gun to his shoulder” (Lee 127). In chapter ten, Tom Johnson was on the loose. Tom Johnson is a dog but this this it was the dog we all wanted to see. As everyone saw him coming down the street his look shaky and out of place. He had rabies. Now most would just avoid the dog but in the story they can’t because, they don’t have medicine to cure people if they get
Imagine you being stripped of all your dignity, hope, and freedom in one swoop. In Elie Wiesel’s book Night he has many problems he needs to overcome. His family splitting up and he stays with his father while his sisters go with their mother. His father and him getting split up when he changed barracks. Him hurting his foot and having to tread through the snow with his father. Then, his fathers death in the new camp. Wiesel’s main goal of this book is to show that if you don’t give up you can do anything you set your mind to.
