In the book, Counting By Sevens, Willow Chance, a 12 year old genius, moves to a new school. Within days she is accused of cheating on a standardized test. As a result she is sent to the school counselor named Dell Duke. Dell soon realizes that Willow did not cheat on the test and then categorizes her as a genius. Willow meets Mai and Quang-ha Nguyen when she arrives early for her counseling one day. Willow and Mai quickly become friends. One day Willow took a taxi to school to arrive at consoling sooner. Her taxi driver named Jairo Hernandez was inspired to go back to school. The next day she goes to Jamison Children's Center. When she sees pictures of her parents in the newspaper she faints and goes to the hospital to get stitches for the cut on her forehead. In the hospital Willow asks to use the restroom, instead she runs away. After Willow is found, temporary custody is given to the Nguyens. The Nguyens live in the garage behind a nail salon. When they are asked for their address they put Dell Duke’s address instead of their own. When social services call they are forced to transform Dell’s messy apartment into a space that is suitable for a family to live in. After they pass the first inspection. Dell moves in with a man down the hall and the family moves into his old apartment. When Willows parents were alive they made her a garden in her backyard. After moving Willow starts to miss her old garden so she asks Dell to buy her a pack of sunflower seeds. Willow used the sunflower seeds to start a new garden in the apartments courtyard. During the process of turning the courtyard into a garden they become frustrated with people arguing over the rocks that they decided to give away and then getting angry with the dirt that the wind would blow over the first floor
