Having pursued employment opportunities that allowed me to make a positive difference on the lives of the less fortunate, the Counselling Psychology course at University of East London is an obvious field that will allow me to continue these desires. Ultimately, this course allows me to change the lives of people and obtain my goals. The course prepares me for employment as a professional clinician, and grants me the ability to continue the promotion of well-being. I am particularly satisfied with the research component of the course; I am interested in the modules related to cognitive behavior therapy through integrative research. In addition, learning about individualized therapy within current social, political, and cultural context offers a solid foundation to employ specific contextual tools. Furthermore, I am interested in human development across the lifespan that focuses on diversity and social justice issues. The course encourages an individualized assessment, and tailored response to match my client's needs. Through the doctoral program in Psychology at the University of East London, I hope to engage in diverse and innovative discourse. The university has a network of over 19,000 international students, which will allow for interactions with varying cultural …show more content…
I counseled the homeless, and people that faced an imminent risk of entering public shelters. I provided them with a variety of tools to assist their families, including filling legal documentation and public assistance paperwork. In particular, I counselled people with low income and/or had special needs; they were assisted with affordable housing and housing vouchers. Currently, I am an independent contractor for a housing company called MYSPACE NYC. The company specializes in housing for those in dire need. My passion for helping people going through a housing crisis, stems from my motivation to assist the less
For this part of the assignment I am using examples from a 50 minute session recorded within the learning environment. I play the role of the counsellor, and another student plays the role of the client. In order for me to answer the learning outcomes, I have watched the DVD recording.
During my sophomore year, I decided to sign up for the class "Intro the Counseling Psych." Little did I know this class was going to set me on a course that would change my high school career for the better. It has been two years since taking that class and I am now officially a high school student counselor. As a counselor, I have many opportunities to better my school community. One of such opportunities is taking part in putting together a high school camp. This camp is no ordinary camp though, this event is put on by the psych-social department and is meant to help students become comfortable with who they are. As a staffer, I spend three weeks prior to the camp, painting signs, preparing activities, and even finding costumes to get students
Cognitive-behavioural therapy is widely short-term and concentrates on enabling clients to deal with very particular problems. Often six weeks to six months sessions of course depending upon the problem it is pacifically goal directed and places great weight upon self-help as a long term coping tool that the client can take away with them and successfully use. Cognitive-behavioural therapy believes that clients can learn the wrong ways of developing and making sense of information during their cognitive development. This can often lead to distortions in the way they identify reality, it’s the job of the therapist to enable them to work this out.

I have always been thrilled by what goes around in people’s minds, but it was at the age of fifteen that I was first attracted to the field of psychology and particularly to clinical psychology. It was mainly because I read my favorite book When Nietzsche Wept by Irvin Yalom. This novel had a personal impact on me, as someone I know was dealing with depression, migraines, insecurities and suicidal tendencies same as happens so in the book’s characters.
I have chosen to enter the field of Mental Health Counseling at this particular time in my life because I would like to learn the skills needed to help people with their life and mental health issues. While attending the University of Saint Joseph during my undergraduate years I took various courses that have led me to making my decision. The courses I took focused on business, biology, social work, and psychology. After graduation I decided to take a year off and gain work experience in customer service and health care. I wanted to experience working with the people in my community. I was hired as a pharmacy technician at a Walgreens in Vernon. Working as a pharmacy technician has been a very rewarding experience for me and I learned a lot about people and their unique needs. I also learned about patient care and how to be pacient and understanding under stressful situations.

It involves the counsellor using skills in which they possess in order to communicate effectively with clients (Hough, 1998). This reflective essay clearly articulates my application of counselling skills used in this practice session and suggestions for improvement. It will provide a summary of the session, identification of a range of skills used and a brief explanation of the reasons for using the skill. It will also provide an evaluation of my application of the skills chosen, including verbatim examples, suggestions for improvement, also including verbatim examples to demonstrate what could
In 2010, I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Human Services degree from University of Phoenix. I began the journey towards my Masters degree in Counseling in
It is my strong desire to attend Fielding Graduate University APA (American Psychological Association) accredited doctoral program in clinical psychology. I have always been intrigued by the human mind for as long as I can remember, specifically the psychopathology of it. I truly enjoy conducting psychological research, learning about psychopathology and how to treat it. While conducting research and learning, it is important to remember that the purpose of psychology isn’t to predict a person’s thoughts, actions, and behaviors, but to understand them. There are dozens of events that occurred in my twenty-five years of life that led me to this meaningful choice of pursuing a doctorate. The two most significant events were when I was in the
Use your work from P3 and analyse (consider in detail) it e.g. what are your strengths in counselling skills, why you think they are your strengths and where do you use them. What are your weaknesses, why do you think they are your weaknesses and what can you do to turn them into strengths.
The role of a counselor takes on many different forms, and it is a very important career, because it helps people make better life choices. The personal values we have, and also how we view the world, can help shape the type of counselor we will be. I will take a self-reflective view of what I hold dear, and also explain how my personal experiences have led me to chose a career in this particular helping profession. I will also describe the differences between the professional counseling, and other helping professions, such as social work for an example. I also will look at how accreditation, licensure, and certification, are important in defining what a counselor is, and does.
I am currently employed by the Department of Defense, U.S. Army, and Information Management Command as an Education Technician.
