The 2002 Newark mayoral election was a hard-fought campaign between Cory Booker, a city council member, against the 16-year incumbent mayor Sharpe James. On January 9, 2002, Cory Booker announced his campaign for mayor of Newark rather than running for re-election as councilman. Sharpe James, who had easily won election four consecutive times, saw Booker as a threat. In the campaign, James and his supporters resorted to mudslinging, and questioned Booker's suburban background, calling him an outsider who did not understand the city. Throughout the campaign, Booker and his supporters faced fierce opposition from Sharpe James. Sharpe employed questionable tactics to gain an upper hand over Booker. Sharpe abused his power to compromise Booker’s

11. What was DuBois’s main contention with the ideology guiding the work of Booker T. Washington?
In reference to the years between 1877 and 1915, I assessed that, based on between each of these strategies, Booker T. Washington’s approach was more appropriate during the time period between 1877 and 1915 than W.E.B. Du Boise’s strategy, for the simple fact that while his strategy would take longer to accomplish deal with the
A prominent literary device in “Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others” is its structure. Dubois organizes the text in a way that maximizes the effectiveness of his message, which was to point out the flaws in Washington’s propositions. He begins by explaining Booker T. Washington’s success, after which he provides background
Too often, society measures success by wealth, power, and status. In American society, those favored by pop culture like the Kardashians tend to wield more influence than rocket scientists or brain surgeons. Acting as a major determining factor of how success is perceived, power often trumps attributes such as intelligence and determination. However, Booker T. Washington firmly disagreed. He posited that how far a person advances and how many obstacles he overcomes should determine success. While Washington’s reasoning is valid in theory, the position one has achieved remains ultimately more significant in certain facets of life.
Two men with the same goals but different views on how they should be achieved is exactly how Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois’ controversy should be described as. Their debate revolved around the idea of abolishing slavery as well as paving the way for the modernized Civil Rights Act in America to take place. Washington and DuBois were born in the same time period with the same intentions, yet had different methods of approaching how to do them. Both of their ideas were focused on how America could be best improved for the future in political, social and educational ways. Booker T. Washington’s perspective and ideologies were better than DuBois’ for
In Booker T. Washington’s 1895 Atlanta Compromise Speech, he is trying to convince his audience by using vivid imagery, allegories, repetition, and reasonable ideas. He uses an optimistic tone to convey four appeals. Throughout the whole speech, he establishes his credibility to a predominantly white audience to make his point stand out for the changes he believes are necessary.
Booker believed that if they just focused on what they could control and then eventually they would get equality. He also believed that we can’t fight back or we will die. “No race can prosper until it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling in the field as in writing a poem”. (Atlanta compromise speech). He believed that working on a field is as worthy as a job as a educator, so he is saying that if the white people noticed that the jobs that blacks are doing are useful as society than later on equality will come. “ As we have proved ur loyalty to you in the past, in nursing your children, watching by the sick-bed of your mothers, and fathers, and often following them with tear- dimmed eyes to their graves, so in the future,in our humble way, we shall stand by you with a devotion that no foreigner can approach, ready to lay down our lives, if
Booker T. Washington was born a slave in virginia and rose to become a very influential black intellectual, and his view on segregation and hate crimes was different than most black people at the time. He believed in a more passive/ peaceful approach and promoted self reliance/ stability (building up almost) .He believed that direct action/ resistance would only lead to more hate crimes and ultimately more death and violence. And through his approach he believed that there would be less violence and that african americans would build up from where they were and that this would be a more peaceful way for blacks to “assimilate” into society, and work for their rights instead of forcefully taking them. “we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress.”
During the twentieth century people in America fought for the equality of African Americans, but the means on how to achieve equality has been heavily debated between many activists such as Washington T. Booker and W.E.B DuBois. Even though they share a common goal their stances on education and methods of achieving equality are different with Washington thinking working hard earns respect and DuBois thinking that African Americans need to demand for equality. Booker believed African Americans would be able to have more of a chance in being respected by focusing their education on having jobs involving manual labor and technical skills such as engineering. Rather than focusing solely on having an education in history, literature, science and
Unequal influence inside- and violence outside- government ensured that the African-American politicians were prevented from working effectively even in their limited posts. However, the fact that these people even had the remote chance of
heart failure in 1915. Booker T. Washington recommended blacks to undertake discrimination for the time being and focus on themselves through hard work and to improve their knowledge ("Booker T Washington." Booker T Washington. N.p., n.d. Web. 08 Nov. 2016.”). All though Washington had done much to help advance many African Americans, there was some truth in the criticism. During Washington's rise as a national spokesperson for African Americans, they were systematically excluded from the vote and political participation through black codes and Jim Crow laws as rigid patterns of segregation and discrimination became institutionalized throughout the South and much of the country (“Bio.com. A&E Networks Television, n.d. Web. 08 Nov. 2016”).
Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie signed a bipartisan legislation regarding all public employees four years ago. This plan was designed so that public employees would give up all of their benefits and in doing so, the state will use that money to make payments into the pension system. But, when New Jersey’s economy was struggling, Christie cut the payments that were meant for the pension fund so that he could balance the state’s budget with that income. This made the pension system far worse off than before. Christie continues to promise to work towards the long-term goals he has for New Jersey although many believe that he is much more concerned about his presidential campaign over his obligations to the state as governor. In order to fix this issue, he planned to freeze the existing pension plan. In doing this, public employees would cease to build benefits and in turn be
As we look through history, we notice that many civilizations have cultural similarities: from food to language to customs. This occurrence also applies to Homer’s The Odyssey and Virgil’s The Aeneid with the former being from Greece and the latter originating from Rome. One of the biggest similarities being that the heroes in both of these works of literature, Odysseus from The Odyssey and Aeneus from The Aeneid, fates are determined by the role the gods decide to play in their lives.
Simile: Simile is a literary device that uses the words “like” or “as” to directly compare two objects, people, places, or concepts in way that exemplifies their meaning or creates a new meaning through differences between the two nouns being compared. The secondary object being compared to the main object is used to draw a resemblance or similarity between the two objects, giving the context a greater meaning and understanding. Example: “Of a carriage, left you like a finch / Wrapped in its nest of linens wound / / With linden leaves in a child’s cardboard box / / Tonight the wind is hover- / / Hunting as the leather seats of the swings go back / And forth with no one in them / / As certain and invisible as / Red scarves silking
